In the early years of Maine’s statehood, the Maine Legislature was strapped for money. The state had millions of acres of public land in northern Maine that was considered “forested wasteland” at that time. The state sold the land to speculators for pennies an acre to balance the budget. One speculator named David Pingree purchased several townships encompassing the headwater lakes of what is now the Allagash Wilderness Waterway (AWW).

Stone Mountain Art Center Schedule for Jan. 28th to Feb. 11, 2012
Paula Cole – Simply one of the best female singers I have ever heard. Songs like “Where have all the Cowboys Gone” and “I Don’t Want to Wait” put her on the list of chart busters. But the first time I heard her she was singing back up for Peter Gabriel. When he featured her, it was clear by the hush and then roar of the crowd that she was headed for bigger and better things. Of course her star rose quickly and now we are lucky to be able to present her in our humble hall.

The James Montgomery Band is especially hot right now. In the past 2 years they have done almost all concert work including opening for AEROSMITH, B.B. KING AND LITTLE FEAT, among others. Some of the other projects have included the Kramer Montgomery Band with JOEY KRAMER from AEROSMITH, a series of JAMES COTTON tributes that have featured HUEY LEWIS , J.GEILS, KIM WILSON from the Thunderbirds, the UPTOWN HORNS (Rolling Stones, James Brown ), JOHNNY A and MICHAEL CARRABELLO from Santana.
Patrick Keliher Takes the Helm to Head Department of Marine Resources
Yesterday, Governor Paul LePage administered the oath for Patrick C. Keliher to serve as Commissioner of the Department of Marine Resources (DMR). The Joint Standing Committee on Marine Resources voted unanimously Thursday afternoon to approve the nomination. Keliher, of South Gardiner, has served as Deputy Commissioner and Director, Bureau of Sea Run Fisheries and Habitat within DMR since 2007. He has served, most recently as Acting Commissioner, and has been serving in this capacity since July.
Cancer Screening Highlighted During National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
As January has been chosen as National Cervical Cancer Awareness month, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (MeCDC) encourages Maine women to schedule a Pap test, especially if it has been five or more years since the last test.
Winter Theater Camp at Johnson Hall Feb. 21, 22, 23, 2012
Johnson Hall Performing Arts Center invites children to come to another great year of creative learning and artistic growth at Winter Shenanigans Visual & Performing Arts Day Camp. Children in grades 3-8 attend camp during school vacation week, on February 21, 22, and 23, from 9:30-4. MDIFW News: Crystal Lake Ice Fishing Derby POSTPONED
Following the recommendations of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Commissioner Chandler Woodcock, the Crystal Lake Ice Fishing Derby Board of Directors has decided to postpone the Crystal Lake Ice Fishing Derby and Kid’s Derby on Saturday January 28, 2012 to the date of Saturday, February 25, 2012. The event is postponed due to concerns for the public’s safety regarding ice conditions.
