The third week of A Capital Read 2009 features a variety of programs for adults and children alike. “Solving the Unsolvable: Maine Cold Cases” will be held on Wednesday, April 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the Reading Room of Lithgow Public Library. A panel of experts will discuss notable Maine cold cases and the methods used to solve them. The presenters are: Maine Deputy Attorney General William Stokes, Chief Medical Examiner Margaret Greenwald, M.D., Brandi Caron, forensic chemist for the Maine State Police Crime Laboratory, and Maine State Police Lt. Gary Wright.
On Thursday, April 23, at 11 a.m. in the Visitor’s Center of the Maine State House, state Rep. Herb Adams will lead a program called “Demon Rum and Other Spirited Spirits: Prohibition in Maine.” Adams will talk about Portland Mayor Neal Dow and the history of prohibition in Maine.
Also on Thursday, April 23, a children’s Whodunit listening event will be held in Youth Services at Lithgow Library beginning at 2 p.m. Sleuths ages 6 and up will solve some five-minute mysteries, along with mysterious activities, snacks and giveaways. The event is free and open to the public, but pre-registration in Youth Services is required.
Lithgow Public Library’s Bookworms book discussion group will meet Friday, April 24 at 1 p.m. in the conference room. Participants are invited to share their thoughts on the Capital Read book, Out of the Deep I Cry. The discussion will be led by a librarian.
A Capital Read 2009 is a community reading project held during the month of April. It is presented by Lithgow Public Library, Maine State Library, Bennett D. Katz Library at UMA, Maine State Law & Legislative Reference Library, and the Maine General Medical Center Library. This year’s book is Out of the Deep I Cry by award-winning Maine mystery writer Julia Spencer-Fleming. The author weaves mystery, human relationships, history and social issues into an absorbing story set in the fictional Adirondack town of Millers Kill. Rev. Clare Fergusson teams up with Millers Kill police chief Russ Van Alstyne to unravel a complicated web of hidden secrets that reach back 50 years.
Out of the Deep I Cry is available for loan at participating libraries, and is free while supplies last at Stacy’s Hallmark (243 Water St.), Harvest Time Natural Foods (171 Capitol St.), and Augusta Seafood (2002 North Belfast Ave.). Copies are also for sale at a 20 percent discount at Mr. Paperback and Barnes & Noble in Augusta.
