Money raised by Hallowell Artist Bruce Mayo to be used by Keep-A-Breast Foundation for breast care education and awareness

October is Breast Care Awareness Month. All of us know about the benefits of breast care and education because we all can cite examples of someone among our family, friends or associates at work who have been stricken with breast cancer. The unfortunate truth is that learning about breast care and then taking proactive measures could have saved many women from surgeries and, in all too many cases, awareness and education could have saved lives.

Personally, I have known many people who have been diagnosed with this type of cancer. On that list are several breast cancer survivors while some others have not been as fortunate. Last year I lost a dear friend to this type of cancer and currently have a family member scheduled for breast removal surgery in the next few days.

Last Monday night at Slates restaurant in Hallowell approximately 200 people gathered to support this very worthy cause through either purchasing Bruce’s art or by donating directly to the Keep-A-Breast Foundation. Volunteer Brianne Hastey, handed out information and bracelets to donors. According to Dotti Galley, Slates Manager, Bruce’s show was the largest art opening they have ever hosted.

ALL the proceeds from Bruce’s show went directly to the Foundation. In all, Bruce sold 24 out of the 29 pieces that he had up for sale. His sales totaled around $3,000. Plus he was asked to do additional work for some individuals and all the proceeds from that work will also go to the Foundation. The show opened at six and most of his art sold before seven. During the course of the evening Brianne took in another $1000 dollars.
