The Maine Conservation Corps, one of the best trail-building units in the country and winner of two national wards, is seeking team leaders for its trail training program, starting Feb. 22, 2010. These are paid positions with health insurance and an AmeriCorps Education award, if eligible. The application deadline is Jan. 8, 2010.

The MCC is dedicated to conservation projects, volunteers, education, and leadership skills. The organization, under the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, engages teams in challenging, high-quality trail projects. Successful participants will lead MCC teams from late May until mid August. MCC teams are composed of young adults 18 or older, both men and women from Maine and other states.

Team leaders teach and lead the MCC team, coordinate and handle team logistics and camp and live with team members during the projects. Among the qualifications required, leaders must be U.S. citizens at least 20 years old, have one season outdoor living experience, be able to teach and get along with people of all ages and backgrounds and have a sense of humor and the ability to maintain a safe and enjoyable work environment. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.

Training topics include: wilderness first responder; outdoor leadership; managing conflict; trail design; construction and maintenance; chainsaw safety; carpentry; building with stone and stonecutting; grip hoist operations; camping skills; food planning for groups; and trucks and trailers.

MCC teams have worked on numerous successful projects – and had a lot of fun while doing them – all over Maine, including Acadia National Park, Maine state parks, the Cutler Coast and Portland trails.
