Showtime is February 27, 2009 9:00 PM.
Pam Baker, Maine’s Queen of the Blues, has been living, breathing and singing the blues for over 25 years. She’s done it all, from singing folk/pop songs with her acoustic guitar to fronting her band Blue Plate Special, one of Maine’s legendary blues bands, with whom she released her first CD, Bakin’ the Blues, in 1998.
For the past several years, Pam has been working with the SGs, which includes blues vets Don Reed on bass and Chris Hartogh on drums and her newest band member, Chris Clark on guitar. In 2008, Pam and the SGs released their most recent CD, The Blues Won’t Wait, with Steve Bailey on guitar. A mix of originals and covers (the feminizing of Willie Dixon’s “Hoochie Coochie Man” is a standout among the latter); this is a high-energy blues party album.
Pam’s blues are inspired by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Sarah Vaughan and Etta James. In performance, Pam sometimes seems to channel the late Janis Joplin, whose “What Good Can Drinkin’ Do” graces The Blues Won’t Wait, and other legendary blueswomen like Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday. Pam has shared the stage with some of the best-known performers in contemporary blues, such as Marcia Ball, Bob Margolin, Debbie Davies, Tab Benoit, Elvin Bishop, Saffire and Duke Robillard.
It’s all about The Voice. Pam has always been able to fill a room and thrill a crowd with her full-throated blues voice. She can energize a jumping crowd-pleaser like “The Blues Won’t Wait” or bring a ballad like “I’d Rather Go Blind” down to a whisper with equal ease. Pam testifies the blues with a wink and a saucy smile. A Pam Baker audience will always find her off the stage and down in the crowd, singing directly to friends and strangers. “There’s nothing like connecting with the audience,” Pam says. “That’s what I’m here for.” That connection is real and direct, and it’s why every show creates new fans and rewards the faithful.
A Pam Baker show is always an energetic good time, guaranteed to fill the house with good blues and the dance floor with happy feet!
