On April 10 this yea, the WOW group will represent Topsham in the annual Cherry Blossom Festival Parade in Washington, DC. Thirty kids from throughout SAD 75 will ride unicycles down Constitution Avenue as part of one of Washington, DC’s largest public events of the year, drawing over 100,000 spectators from around the world. Throughout the month of March, the group will be holding several fundraising events to raise the $15,000 necessary to make the trip.
Other upcoming fundraising events include a pancake breakfast on March 7 at the Brunswick Knights of Columbus; the annual WOW community performance on March 12 at Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham, and a Chili Cook-Off with restaurants and amateur cooks competing at Woodside School on March 13. For further information on any of these events, contact Ceci Gilson, (207) 837-8849.
Now in its fourth year under coach and Woodside physical education teacher Eric Pulsifer, the WOW program teaches students in grades 3 – 8 many “circus arts” skills including riding unicycles, juggling, walking on stilts, performing tricks with the diabolo and devil sticks, and balancing on a circus ball – often while doing several of the previous feats. Students in the group learn the importance of setting goals and working hard to achieve them while gaining the confidence necessary to perform their new skills for audiences.
The Woodside One Wheelers will also perform a short program during half-time at the Maine Red Claws game on April 3 at the Portland Expo. The Maine Red Claws are the NBA Development League basketball team affiliated with the Boston Celtics and located in Portland, Maine. This will be WOW’s second performance with the Red Claws – they performed the half-time show on December 31, 2009.
