the opera house at boothbay best Here’s what’s been happening at the House…

The wind roared, the snow came down, and the lights went out, but thanks to crews from Central Maine Power, the Opera House was powered back up in time for last weekend’s hoot of a Hometown Hootenanny. The capacity crowd enjoyed a great night of rocking music presented by some of the region’s best musicians. The musicians, under the sometimes hilarious leadership of Gary Blackman and Bobby Reed, all volunteered their time and talents. Ticket sales and local business sponsorships resulted in nearly $5000 being raised in support of the Opera House’s on going restoration. Thank you one and all for a memorable Hoot!

Earlier in February the House was the setting for the final performance during the farewell tour of the long-playing bluegrass band Northern Lights. It, too, was a night to remember. It was a spectacular night of picking with both the old talents of Northern Lights and a couple of brilliant new, young musicians on hand. It was a night that definitely warmed up the Opera House. If you missed it, look out for a “reunion concert.”

Even though it is still winter and many are hibernating, the Opera House rarely sleeps. Read on for news of upcoming events and don’t forget to check our website for the most current calendar updates.

We were just getting accustomed to no painters or contractors, but the work is set to begin again this month. If you drive by and see excavators, know that we are installing drainage to help dry out the massive Opera House basement. Later this spring we also hope to remove the existing, crumbling Townsend Avenue stairs and replace them with stairs replicating the original 1894 stairs. No surprise, the Opera House is always seeking financial support for our on going capital renovation and restoration work. If you are interested in hearing more about what’s in store, please contact Cathy Sherrill in the office at 207-633-6855.

We have many great shows and community events in the days, weeks and months ahead.  Hope to see you in the audience…
