Arts at the Club
Arts at the Club, a collaboration of Johnson Hall Performing Arts Center and The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Gardiner, presents two arts-related activities this spring at the Club on Pray Street, Gardiner. Johnson Hall received a grant from the Oak Grove School Foundation funding the arts programs for young teens of middle-school age. Denise Reehl of Johnson Hall worked with Inez Kelley of the Club to bring in arts that the kids want to experience. Hip-hop and ballroom dance classes are being taught in March and April by Rachel Waterbury, director of the R&B Dance Company in Gardiner. Mask-making and sculpture workshops are presented by artist Leon Hastings of Gardiner. Many interested young people have signed up and are taking lessons from the artists. Parents and friends are invited to see the results of the classes. The young people will demonstrate their new dance skills at a dance performance to be presented in the Club’s gym on April 6 at 3pm. The sculptural masks created by the young artists will be exhibited at an art opening on April 29 in the afternoon in the lobby of the Club. The masks will later be permanently displayed in the Club’s hallways.
This is the second year of Oak Grove Foundation support for the program. The 2009 Arts at the Club program presented a murder mystery dinner theater, circus skills classes and performance, and several visual arts workshops. A jungle mural created at the workshops is displayed in the Club’s teen room. The Boys and Girls Club can be reached at 582-8458. Johnson Hall’s phone number is 582-7144.
