On Thursday, September 30, the Kennebec Valley YMCA in Augusta hosted a Send-off Event for 2010 Olympian and Augusta, native Julia Clukey. As part of the festivities, Clukey shared her inspiring story and highlight video and with the kids. After the presentation, she was honored with a commemorative plaque from the YMCA for her recent athletic accomplishments and contributions to the local community.
Before the presentation of the plaque, Clukey shared her experiences growing up in Maine and the importance that the YMCA has played in her athletic and personal development.
“I grew up as a young kid going to the old YMCA in Augusta, so having this plaque in the lobby means a lot to me. I hope it can help motivate the kids to work hard, make good decisions and inspire them to go after their dreams. I would like to thank everyone at the YMCA for this honor,” said Clukey.
Clukey, age 25, finished 17th in the luge competition at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada, and has already announced that she plans to compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. She spent the summer training in Maine, including at the Kennebec Valley YMCA. After the Send off event, she will soon travel to the U.S. luge training facility in Lake Placid, New York, to prepare for the 2010 World Cup.
