penobscot ecoBAR HARBOR – The Penobscot Watershed Eco-Center (PWEC), located at 160 Main Street in Bar Harbor, will open for its second season on Saturday, May 28th. The center hosts an exhibit entitled “The Living Web” which presents scientifically and culturally sound education around the importance of water using the Penobscot River Watershed as a model.

The Penobscot River is the largest river in Maine and the second largest in New England. Three hundred and fifty miles in length, it drains an 8,592 square-mile watershed, which is home to a stunning collection of wildlife and diverse fisheries.

The Penobscot Watershed Eco-Center was created to celebrate this important watershed and the diverse cultural and ecological benefits that it provides. The collaborative space offers information on historic and contemporary stories of stewardship as well as several significant initiatives in the watershed, with displays by the Acadia Birding Festival, RESTORE: The North Woods, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Craig Brook Fish Hatchery, Penobscot East Resource Center, the Penobscot River Restoration Project and the Penobscot Indian Nation. Area residents are playing an important role in the creation and long-term success of the center.

The exhibit features a 61- foot long map of the Penobscot River from the bay to the headwaters. There are also wildlife exhibits and handouts about the work of each of the partners in the PWEC collaborative.

An open house is scheduled for Saturday, June 18th, from noon to 3:00 pm. The mission of the Penobscot Watershed Eco-Center is to increase public understanding and appreciation of the character, history, and future of the Penobscot River Watershed.
