National bestselling mystery author Gerry Boyle returns to Lithgow Public Library’s ever-popular Mystery Month with a reading and book signing on Thursday, October 20. “Death Be Not Loud” features a slate of four exciting Maine crime authors. In addition to Boyle, the line-up has included James Hayman and Dorothy Cannell; Paul Doiron will give a talk on Wednesday, October 26.

The Kennebec Valley Humane Society (KVHS) in Augusta, ME, is currently in urgent need of funds to help repair a critical part of their heating system. In early October it was discovered that two parts of the commercial circulator, which provide heat and dehumidification throughout the shelter, needed to be replaced immediately. Action must be taken immediately to repair the heating system, and the final bill for the work to prepare the shelter to adequately heat the facility over the cold winter months totals over $5,000
MCMH has a tradition of a maintaining a well-staffed facility with safe nurse to patient ratios based on acuity. The MSNA bargaining team was committed to having those practices reflected in the contract in order for safe and effective care to continue into the future.
The public is invited to the Harlow Gallery in Hallowell on Thursday, October 13, from 7-8:30pm for a gallery talk with artists Peter Precourt of Winthrop and Luc Demers of Falmouth. Their art exhibition entitled “Chalk” will be on view through October at the Harlow Gallery in downtown Hallowell. Chalk is a collaborative exhibition of interdisciplinary two dimensional blackboard/chalk based images. The gallery talk will address the exhibition and the relationship between the blackboard and the photograph in relation to nostalgia, and to the past and present.
The talk is presented by Johnson Hall Performing Arts Center and Gardiner Public Library as part of a series of events funded by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts; and the Maine Humanities Council, a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to engage the people of Maine with the power and pleasure of ideas.
The May issue of Maine Ahead included an article by retired professor Orlando Delogu entitled “Pension Shell Game.” Among other points, he dismissed the gravity of the huge $4.1 billion debt owed by Maine taxpayers for teacher and state employee pension benefits. The emeritus professor taught environmental and land use law at the University of Maine for over 40 years.
The half-rotten bateau that had been sitting in the barn at Churchill Depot for the last 35 years has been restored by theBoatSchool, an affiliate ofHussonUniversityinBangor. TheBoatSchool, located in Eastport, donated the time, materials, and expertise for the restoration project. Students working under the supervision of master boat builder Ed Scott provided the labor for the restoration project.

Roxanne Quimby has offered to donate 70,000 acres she currently owns located along the East Branch of the Penobscot River to the National Park Service for a new national park and another 70,000 acres to the State of Maine for permanent public access for traditional recreation uses. She has also offered to donate a $20 million endowment and to help raise an additional $20 million endowment to help manage the park.
