As noted in Gardiner Main Street’s e-newsletter and other state and local media, Gardiner is one of five finalists for the Orton Foundation’s “Heart and Soul” community planning grant. On Tuesday, November 1st, guests from the Orton foundation will be spending all day in Gardiner getting to know the community, and learning about why we’re so great! The schedule for this event is as follows according to further information as supplied today by Nate Rudy, Director, Economic and Community Development:
First, the marvellous Maynard Perkins will be filling in for John Hasnip as the host of our Tuesday Open Mic from 7 ’til 10pm. Maynard is an accomplished blues singer/guitarist who also plays lead guitar for a number of area performers! He often graces the stage at the Mad Dog on Open Mic night, so folks should be familiar with him and his musical style.
The Running of the Hairy Legged Brides is a team relay race to raise money for Camp Sunshine. The race course, located on Water Street in downtown Gardiner, is a bold 100 laps between Sweet Love Bridal Boutique and Renys. CLZ will be on-site to capture the event as it unfolds! To compete in the race, each team must have at least one wedding dress, to be worn by the running bride. Because of the strenuous nature of the course, relay teams are encouraged to have at least 5 members.Prizes will be awarded to the first team to complete the race, to “best in show,” and to the top fundraising team. To be considered for an award or prize, your donations must be received no later than 7:00 AM, November 5, 2011.
November is Alzheimer’s disease awareness month and a chance for all of us to recognize that Alzheimer’s affects not only the individual, but the families and caregivers involved. For every person with Alzheimer’s there is often at least one other person who directly cares for them, and a host of healthcare & social workers, advocates, volunteers and support workers in the background.
Jazzy Chas and The DelRossi Posse on November 3rd and JimmyJo Cajun Music on the 6th at The Liberal Cup
The Soul Sensations featuring the Pat and Bob Colwell Brothers (The Colwell Brothers Band) return for a show at Johnson Hall Performing Arts Center, 280 Water Street, Gardiner, on Saturday, November 5 at 7:30 pm. The Colwell Brothers bring their unique brand of high energy electric Blues and R&B to any stage. Wherever they are found the listener is guaranteed a night to remember.
In honor of Veteran’s Day Spectrum Generations will be offering a FREE lunch to our local heroes at three of its Community Centers in Central Maine. Each location has planned a program to pay tribute to those who have served our country. The meal will be free for Veterans, but all are welcome at a very reasonable fee for a first rate meal. “This is a very special day for our veterans, and we are honored to be able to recognize our service men and women in this small way,” states Denver Brown, Spectrum Generations Nutrition Director.
For the first time since Maine Prisoner Advocacy Coalition (M-PAC) was formed, representatives were invited to tour Maine State Prison on October 21st. M-PAC’s Co-Coordinator, Judy Garvey, reports, “We attribute the increase in direct communications with Maine’s Department of Corrections to Commissioner Joe Ponte’s proactive openness in addressing systemic problems.”
From Ed DesJardins: Just a reminder that there’s still plenty of room for the Shane Alexander show this coming Wednesday Nov. 2nd at 7:30. This will be the very last venue at St. Andrew’s in Readfield. I’m a bit sad for that for a number of reasons, primarily because we have had so many wonderful shows there- but we’ll find another space for sure.
