Downtown Bath businesses have been getting some tasty recognition in recent weeks. Briggs Advertising received first place at the Ad Club of Maine’s Brodeson Awards for their website design work for Giffords’s Ice Cream; and Kim Brackett of Brackett’s Market was elected President of the board of the Maine Grocer’s Association. Congratulations to both for the well deserved honors!

2011 was a remarkable year for our festival. And now that the dust has finally settled, we’d like to give a heartfelt thanks to all the filmmakers, industry, sponsors, contributors, volunteers and most importantly audience members who made this year’s Camden International Film Festival so darn special. Thank you. We appreciate your commitment to our organization and we are constantly amazed at the level of support we receive year after year. We could not do this without you.
I must admit – I’m a sucker for performances so riveting, I almost don’t care about what the movie is about. That is NOT the case with the incredible Take Shelter, but I mention it only to let you know how amazing Michael Shannon’s performance truly is (a lock for an Oscar nom). There are some similarities to last year’s popular Black Swan, in that you are never sure if the character is losing his mind, or if the visions are real. Michael Shannon has been around since debuting in Groundhog Day, but this should be the role that turns up his career full throttle. I hope you come see this film and tell me what YOU think of his performance. Take Shelter also stars the new “it” girl, Jessica Chastain.

Wahooooooo! Hip hip hip hooray! We did it! Ahem, excuse me. Today is a really good day. Thanks to you – and your hard work – same day voter registration remains law in Maine. This has been quite a journey – and you’ve been with us for it all. The story of this journey started during the legislative session – when the Maine Women’s Lobby, along with many coalition partners, worked to defeat the bill to repeal our 38-year-old same-day voter law.
How can Maine taxpayers be expected to help pay for $314,000 “low-income” apartments when the median single-family home sells for $159,000? Why should our fellow Mainers be asked to subsidize housing which they themselves cannot afford to live in?
St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Augusta will hold a Veteran’s Day Service at 11:00 on Friday, November 11th. The service will honor our current military personnel, veterans and their families. Military personnel and veterans are encouraged to wear uniform or medals/ribbons awarded. The service will be held in the Chapel where a stained glass window honoring our military personnel was dedicated in 1976.
