Submit your proposal to the Gaslight Theater Board by email (Gaslighttheater@yahoo.com) or mail to Gaslight Theater c/o Richard Bostwick Box 345 Hallowell, ME 04347 by January 31, 2012. We would need to have a copy of the script (which we will return), short summary of the play, the number of actors and the approximate length in time. All shows will be done with a minimal and highly movable set. You can contact us before hand to see if we have a copy in our collection before the 31st. Proposal should also have contact information for the director.

The Gaslight Theater produces the Evening of One-Acts to encourage and mentor new directors, which furthers our goal of making theater arts more accessible. The One-Acts provide an opportunity for actors to take on intriguing roles with a lesser time commitment than a full-length production. It’s also a great way for those who haven’t acted or directed before, or have limited experience, to “get their feet wet” on the stage.

<var></var>Shows will be cast by an open audition scheduled by The Gaslight Theater after the shows are chosen.

The Theater group will present the one acts April 13, 14 2012 at Hallowell City Hall, and some will be presented at the The Maine Association of Community Theaters act one act festival on April 21 in Portland.

FMI Contact Richard Bostwick at the Gaslight Theater

ALSO DON’T FORGET

The Gaslight Theater Announces auditions for the show ‘Circle Mirror Transformation’ by Annie Baker on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 27 and 28th at 6:30 at Hallowell City Hall. The show will be directed by Richard Bostwick, assisted by Deb Howard.

Production dates are March 2, 3, 4 (matinee), 8, 9 and 10:

The show has 3 women and 2 men. Ages are 1 high school looking female, a male and female who are former hippie types, and a male and female between the two ages.

The auditions will consist of primarily cold readings. This means reading from the script without preparing beforehand.

The Gaslight Theater of Hallowell is pleased to announce it’s 2012 season. A blend of modern and classic, farce and drama, these selections will all feature strong ensemble casts, the hallmark of great community theater.

Circle Mirror Transformation by Annie Baker. Directed by Richard Bostwick – March 2, 3, 4 (matinee), 8, 9 and 10:

When four New Englanders who enroll in Marty’s six-week-long community-center drama class begin to experiment with harmless games, hearts are quietly torn apart, and tiny wars of epic proportions are waged and won. A beautifully crafted diorama, a petri dish in which we see, with hilarious detail and clarity, the antic sadness of a motley quintet. 2010 Obie Award Winner, Best Play.

The 39 Steps adapted by Patrick Barlow, from the movie by Alfred Hitchcock and the novel by John Buchan Directed by Lynette Miller May 18, 19, 20 (matinee), 24, 25 and 26:

In The 39 Steps, a man with a boring life meets a woman with a thick accent who says she’s a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon, a mysterious organization called “The 39 Steps” is hot on the man’s trail in a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale. A riotous blend of virtuoso performances (a cast of over a hundred is played by only 4 actors) and wildly inventive stagecraft, The 39 Steps amounts to an unforgettable evening of pure pleasure. 2008 Tony Award Nominee, Best Play.

Fox on the Fairway by Ken Ludwig Directed by Linda Duarte August 30 and 31, September 1, 7, 8 and 9 (matinee):

A tribute from Ken Ludwig (Lend Me A Tenor, Moon Over Buffalo) to the great English farces of the 1930s and 1940s, The Fox On the Fairway takes audiences on a hilarious romp which pulls the rug out from underneath the stuffy denizens of a private country club. Filled with mistaken identities, slamming doors, and over-the-top romantic shenanigans, it’s a furiously paced comedy that recalls the Marx Brothers’ classics.

Murder on the Nile by Agatha Christie Directed by Deborah Howard November 8, 9, 10, 16, 17 and 18 (matinee)

Gaslight Theater returns to the mistress of mystery for another classic who-done-it in Murder on the Nile. Take a pair of newlyweds, a jilted lover, an ill-tempered British aristocrat and her maid, a surly German, and few others, add a murder, stir well, and you have Murder on the Nile. Based on the book featuring Hercule Poirot, the stage version presents a different take on the art of detection.

All shows are at Hallowell City Hall – Evening Shows are at 7:30 and matinees are at 2 pm Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens. Reservation line usually opens up 3 weeks before the show opens- 207-626-3698/ FMI go to www.gaslighttheater.org or Email them at Gaslighttheater@yahoo.com

In addition to these full-scale productions, watch for information on our Evening of One-Act Plays, coming in April of 2012.

The reservation line is open for Gaslight Theater’s production of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest: A Trivial Comedy for Serious People” which opens May 27th at Hallowell City Hall. Reservations can be made by calling Gaslight’s reservation line at 626-3698. Directed by Karen LaPlante, Earnest tells the tale of Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff. Both young men have taken to bending the truth in order to add a dash of excitement to their lives. Jack has invented an imaginary brother, Earnest, whom he uses as an excuse to escape from his dull home in the country and frolic in town. Algernon uses a similar technique, only in reverse: his imaginary friend, Bunbury, provides a convenient and frequent method of taking adventures in the country. However, their deceptions eventually cross paths, resulting in a series of crises that threaten to spoil their romantic pursuits: Jack of his love Gwendolen and Algernon of his belle Cecily. The cast for The Importance of Being Earnest includes Matt Blais and Daniel Kennedy as Jack and Algernon, Katie Doornbus as Gwendolyn, Hannah Weston as Cecily Cardew, Ellen Lamb as Lady Bracknell, Larry Vinal as Canon Chasuble, Jeralyn Shattuck as Miss Prism, and Bob Collins Lane and Merriman.
The Importance of Being Earnest: A Trivial Comedy for Serious People

by Oscar Wilde

Directed by Karen LaPlante

First performed on 14 February 1895 at St. James’s Theatre in London, the play is a farcical comedy filled with wit and wisdom.

It tells the tale of Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff.

Its high farce and witty dialogue have helped make The Importance of Being Earnest Wilde’s most enduringly popular play.

Our usual slate of four shows have been chosen, with a few shake-ups to enhance our traditonal schedule.

New for 2011, all evening performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. (matinees will remain at 2:00 p.m.). And to kick off the holiday season with a gift for the entire family, our annual musical offering which this year is the classic Cinderella (with an enchanted twist), will be offered in late fall.

In addition to these full-scale productions, watch for information on our Evening of One-Act Plays, coming in April of 2011, and a holiday surprise in December.

Key For Two

by John Chapman & Dave Freeman

directed by Richard Bostwick

A frothy farce designed for those who like their theatrical entertainment broad and uncomplicated. Harriet, a divorcee, solves her financial problems by entertaining two married gentlemen callers on different days of the week. The scheme faces collapse when her best friend Anne, whose marriage is tottering, arrives at the flat hotly pursued by her husband. The indescribable confusion builds to a rich complexity of mistaken identity and farcical situations.

May 27, 28, 29 (matinee); June 2, 3, 4

The Importance of Being Earnest

by Oscar Wilde

directed by Karen LaPlante

First performed on 14 February 1895 at St. James’s Theatre in London, the play is a farcical comedy filled with wit and wisdom. Two young men, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff have taken to bending the truth in order to add a dash of excitement to their lives. However, their deceptions eventually cross paths, resulting in a series of crises that threaten to spoil their romantic pursuits: Jack of his love Gwendolen and Algernon of his belle Cecily. Its high farce and witty dialogue have helped make The Importance of Being Earnest Wilde’s most enduringly popular play.

August 26, 27, 28 (matinee); September 1, 2, 3

And Then There Were None

by Agatha Christie

In this superlative mystery comedy by the acknowledged master of the genre, a nursery rhyme tells how each of the ten indians met his death until there were none. On a remote and isolated island, ten people – 8 invited guests and two servants – find themselves facing their own deaths. One by one, the guests are killed, until…. A classic!

Proposals to direct And Then There Were None are being solicited. If you are interested, please contact us. If you haven’t directed for Gaslight before, send along some information about your previous experience.

November 11, 12,13 (matinee); November 17, 18, 19, 20 (matinee)

Cinderella (Enchanted Edition)

Music by Richard Rodgers, Book and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II

Adapted for the Stage by Tom Briggs

From the teleplay by Robert L. Freedman

Directed by Deborah Howard, Music Direction by Brad Howard

Familiar to young and old alike – the very definition of “happily ever after”! In Cinderella (Enchanted edition) the timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957 and updated in 1997, this version is the ideal early holiday season family event.
