Maine Writers & Publisher Alliance Announces 2012 Maine Literary Awards Finalists

The finalists hail from every corner of the state, including Bangor, Belfast, Bethel, Brunswick, Camden, Deer Isle, Georgetown, Norridgewock, Portland, Stockton Springs, Unity, and York. Youth finalists come from communities such as Farmington, New Gloucester, Scarborough, and West Bath.The winners of the awards will be revealed live at a ceremony on Thursday, May 31 at 7:00 p.m. at the Glickman Library on the University of Southern Maine’s Portland campus. The event is free to MWPA members with a suggested $10 donation for nonmembers.

Pineland Suzuki School is First of Three Events in Lithgow Library’s Read Program

A violin concert and two book discussion groups are the first programs planned for Lithgow Public Library’s A Capital Read, a month-long series of events held in March and April revolving around the best-selling novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. Author Jamie Ford’s appearance at Lithgow Library on Wednesday, April 18 at 6:30 p.m. marks the return of the very popular community-wide reading program.

This richly illustrated lecture takes a look inside The Rare Books Collection at the Library of Congress, the largest collection of rare books in the Western hemisphere. The lecture will be given by Mark Dimunation, Chief of the Rare Book and Special Collections Division, Library of Congress.

Altered Book Exhibition at the Hubbard Free Library in Hallowell March 8-29, 2012

The Hubbard Free Library in Hallowell is hosting an exhibition of Altered books March 8-29, 2012. The exhibition will end with a reception for the artists on Thursday, March 29th from 4 to 5 pm, which the public is invited to attend. The Hubbard Free Library is located at 115 Second Street in Hallowell, and their hours are Mon & Wed 10am – 5:30pm, Tue & Thur 2-8pm, Fri 2-5:30pm.

This 4-part lecture series is presented in conjunction with The Art of the Book exhibition on view in the Farnsworth’s Craig Gallery January 14 through April 1, 2012, which is an exploration of the museum’s eclectic collection of primarily nineteenth and twentieth century rare, first edition, and out-of-print books ranging from the earliest purchases by Robert Bellows in the 1940s to important donations made throughout the museum’s history. This lecture series will expound upon this theme to highlight different aspects of book arts, including illustrated books, book binding, rare book conservation, and artists’ books. From the perspective of a book conservator, this lecture will explore how a book ages and the various considerations for its care. From the choice of materials used in the production of the book, to the successive care of its owners, the choices made by a book’s handlers will have enormous impact on its lifespan. In addition, this lecture will consider how the electronic age has affected the value of the tangible, printed book. While the idea of a book as a work-of-art is not new, nor is the idea of a single book having enormous value; what is new, is that in an electronic age where fewer books are printed, their value may increase simply because of their scarcity.

2012 Maine Literary Awards Open for Nominations Until March 1, 2012

As an experiment, the MPWA is also offering three new categories this year alongside their traditional Fiction and Nonfiction categories. Books may now be entered in Crime Fiction, Speculative Fiction, and Memoir. Crime Fiction is an umbrella category for books that fall into one of the following general categories: crime, noir, thriller, suspense, mystery, police procedurals, and cozys. Speculative Fiction is an umbrella category for books that fall into one of the following general categories: science fiction, fantasy, dystopian, horror, and supernatural.

Author Takes Issue with Definition, Business and Politics of Organic Farming

So… is it organic? Nope. And that’s a complete shame. It turns out what you think about organic food is mostly wrong.The global organic industrial-complex promises everything and delivers nothing. But don’t blame organic farmers! They’re victims, along with millions of consumers.
