(2011)

Fans of the Stieg Larsson Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy will appreciate this latest Scandi-noir based on the bestselling book by author Jo Nesbø. Headhunters is an intense action thriller, as well as a provocative investigation into questions of betrayal, revenge and deadly ambition. The talented Aksel Hennie (Max Manus) stars as Roger, a charming scoundrel and Norway’s most accomplished corporate headhunter. Roger is living a life of luxury well beyond his means, and has begun stealing art to subsidize his expensive lifestyle. At a gallery opening, his wife introduces him to Clas Greve (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, “Game of Thrones”). Not only is he a perfect candidate for the CEO position Roger is currently recruiting for, he is also in possession of a very valuable painting. Roger sees his chance to become financially independent, and starts planning his biggest hit ever, risking it all to get his hands on the painting. When Roger breaks into Greve’s house, he finds something that changes his life completely, and soon forces him to run for his life. The headhunt has begun! (Fully subtitled)

Made with the support of the Marley family, the film features rare footage, incredible performances and revelatory interviews with the people that knew him best. Marley is the story of a towering figure of musical history, whose music and message has transcended different cultures, languages and creeds to resonate around the world today as powerfully as when he was alive.

Teen-Elementary School Shows (TESS) – an after-school program

TESS 2012 theme is Dr. Seuss. Plays will be based on “If I Ran the Zoo,” “And to Think that I Saw it on Mulberry Street,” and “The Butter Battle Book.” This year, funding allows us to present only one session, at Lincoln School, Augusta, in May. The performance will be at Lincoln School on May 24, at 6 pm.

Support for TESS 2012 is from:

Wing-Benjamin Trust
Evergreen Foundation
Gosline-Murchie Insurance Agency
Attorney Karen Boston
Lincoln School

STAFF, 2012:

Theater Director: Kathleen Nation
Art Director: Nancy Barron
Teen Theater Directors: Sarah Kaplan, Noah Gallagher, Shaun Gallagher (all of Cony H.S.)
Teen Art Directors: Willa Barron, Maggie Coffin (both of Gardiner Area H.S.)

Teen-Elementary School Shows (TESS) – an after-school program

Depending on grant funding, Johnson Hall offers this program to two or three schools in the Capital area each spring. TESS is offered free to participating students, because it is funded by grants, business sponsors, and $600 from each School PTA.

In Teen-Elementary School Shows, Johnson Hall Performing Arts Center hires professional theater and art directors to supervise the after-school program, and teenagers who are accomplished in theater and art to conduct it. The program works on several levels–as a learning experience for teenagers and for elementary students, and to introduce school communities to live theater. The adult theater director works with the theater teens to choose a subject and to write several short plays. The themes over the eight years of the program have ranged from Aesop’s Fables and Winnie the Pooh, to the books of a local author and Greek myths. In 2007, the theme was Wicked Far Off-Broadway: Maine Stories and 2008, “TESS Goes Green,” and in 2010, “Classic Talespins,” new takes on favorite fairy tales.

Our professional director helps the teens write appropriate plays for the developmental level of the elementary students who will be performing. Johnson Hall staff work closely with the school administration and teachers to educate them about the program and contract with each school. Then JH staff distributes information and registration forms in the schools for the free program. The professional art director and several teens make a lively sign-up poster for the school bulletin board, and visit classes to promote interest in signing up. Students are accepted as theater or art students on a first-come, first-served basis. When the after-school program begins, teens lead the elementary students in theater exercises, decide who to cast in each play, rehearse and produce the plays. The art students, with teen directors supervising, create props, backdrops, and costumes. (The adults are always available for assistance.) The sessions are two weeks in duration at each participating school. Finally, they present the finished plays to each school population at an afternoon show, and to the parents and community at an evening show the same day.

TESS provides a live theater and creative art experience to elementary students and their proud parents. A lot of learning is woven into the fun and humor of the plays- about literature, performance, creativity, art, the children’s own abilities, and about how important each of them is to the whole. Many programs feature adults conducting theater or music in the schools. But the special magic of TESS is the key role of the teens.

Benefits of TESS:

Helps schools meet the Maine Learning Results performing arts and public speaking requirements.

TESS plays are based on literature, so it encourages students to read books, and increases their interest in literature.

Provides a creative activity after school, when many children are unsupervised and studies show they are more likely to get in trouble.

Offers a live theater experience in elementary schools.

Offers an art experience to those who may not want to appear on stage.

Brings children and teens together for a positive, creative experience. The young people see the teens as good role models.

The teens also learn– theater techniques and terms, time management, flexibility, how to work with a group of lively children, and leadership skills. The program encourages creativity and initiative among teens, and gives them job experience.

Summer Shenanigans is an unusual theater and art camp, because kids create and perform a play, from A to Z, based on their own ideas. ANYTHING can happen when they create a play! At the beginning of the week, they decide what character they want to be, and they develop the locations and plot as a group. They learn how to make the audience believe they’re someone else: travelers from another country, a flying asteroid, a slippery shadow or maybe a giant grasshopper! They learn stage directions and acting techniques, and they make their own props, costumes, and sets. At the end of the week, campers’ family and friends come and watch the performance, which is sure to be fun and amazing!

Summer Shenanigans Visual and Performing Arts Day Camp incorporates both the visual and the performing arts. Our staff is made up of artists and performers experienced in teaching children of all ages. Our goal is to provide developmentally- appropriate, stimulating artistic experiences that are FUN!

Performing Arts instruction involves character building, improvisation, creative movement and story-telling skills. Visual arts instruction will include a variety of possible media, ranging from painting through clay sculpture, fiber art, print or mask making, simple set and props construction.

Four sessions are held, for varied age groups.

What is a week at Summer Shenanigans like?

Campers spend their time with a minimum of two adult staff members and one teen intern at all times. On the first morning of each session, the Performing Arts Instructors will use structured, age-appropriate activities to help the campers use their imagination to develop a story they can tell together through performance. The Visual Arts Instructors will join the group during the morning to help decide which media and activities will match the play that has been born.

From then on, instructors and campers will spend half of each day on performing arts, half on visual arts. On Friday, they present a show for parents and also have artwork to take home. Campers need to provide their own bag lunches for sessions II, III, and IV and a snack for Session I. To get some fresh air, campers spend time outside in the mini-park next to Johnson Hall, and also occasionally go to the Common or the riverfront. They visit the Gardiner Public Library to learn how to use the library and to get resources for developing their characters and ideas for sets and costumes.

Tuition is charged for this day camp.

The stakes could not be higher as visionary director Robert Lepage, the world’s greatest singers, and the Metropolitan Opera tackle Wagner’s Ring cycle. An intimate look at the enormous theatrical and musical challenges of staging opera’s most monumental work, the film chronicles the quest to fulfill Wagner’s dream of a perfect Ring.

Conceived by Wagner as a prologue to the Ring cycle, Das Rheingold sets forth the dramatic issues that play out in the three subsequent operas. Gold from the depths of the Rhine River is stolen by the dwarf Alberich, who uses it to forge a ring that will give him unlimited power. The theft sets in motion a course of events that will eventually alter the order of the universe. Bryn Terfel as Wotan, lord of the gods, heads the cast.

This extraordinarily powerful work of theater focuses on some of the Ring’s most interesting characters at decisive moments of their lives: Wotan, whose violation of his own laws has jeopardized the gods’ rule; his twin offspring, Siegmund and Sieglinde, who are meant to save the gods; and, above all, his heroic Valkyrie daughter Brünnhilde, who makes a fateful decision that shatters her world. This production marked soprano Deborah Voigt’s first performances as Brünnhilde. Bryn Terfel again is Wotan, Jonas Kaufmann and Eva-Maria Westbroek star as the twins, Siegmund and Sieglinde, and Stephanie Blythe sings Fricka.

Led by Meghan’s powerful and angelic voice, the songs beg the listener to delve inward and experience the music through their mind, body, and heart. Opening the evening will be a set from Mica Jones and his band. Reverie Machine pulls from a wide variety of music and focuses it on an original take on folk, jazz and a touch of something heavy. The music we make is strongly influenced by living in a port town, mystic experience, loss and a desire to push things to the limit. It is our hope that you are moved by what we make. Featuring: Meghan Yates-vocals, guitar Mordechai Rosenblatt-Bass, vocals Elliot Heeschen- drums Peter Himmer – Percussion /vibes Seth Mullendore – Baritone Sax They will be performing song off their recently recorded, first full length album (Not By Blood)with Todd Hutchinsen at Acadia in Portland, Maine. Expected for official release in May 2012.

05/18/12 – Don’t miss this special CD Release/Memoriam performance from Portland’s own Pete Dubuc(frontman of Gunther Brown) and Dark Hallow Bottling Company- Friday May 18th 7:30PM; Tickets $10 advance/ $12 door. On-sale now through Brown Paper Tickets or at any Bull Moose Music location. Having released 2 studio recordings with his band, Gunther Brown, ‘The Ship’ marks Pete Dubuc’s first solo release. Just days from recording what was going to be a new full length Gunther Brown album, Pete’s mother very unexpectedly passed away at the age of 64 from a stroke which was brought on by an unknown brain tumor. The day after her passing, Pete wrote the song, The Ship, in her memory. Deciding it was important to keep the studio time and record this tribute to her, the studio time would result in these seven songs which are being released to raise money for the American Cancer Society. All money raised from the sale of this album is being donated to ACS. Ticket revenue for this show will go entirely to the American Cancer Society and the non profit St Lawrence Arts. With his band Gunther Brown, Pete’s music was described by the Portland Press Herald as “earthy, eloquent and entirely honest. It’s Americana music, with roots that spread to folk, rock and old-time country.” http://www.guntherbrown.com

05/19/12 – Jago Thorne and his 5 piece ensemble will perform new unreleased songs and selections from Thorne’s self-produced debut album. Guitars, pedal steel, strings, drums, and electronica make for a dynamic soundscape for this singer-songwriter’s live project. His songwriting draw from personal experience while sonic experimentations stem from adventurous contradictions in sonics. With noise generators are under finger tips and analog delays painting pedal steel with unusual abstraction, ballads and rock pulse take on new form. With an interest in a larger creative collective, community submitted Lomokino vignettes are to be projected during the performance. Producing a lyrical, musical and visual collaboration live in concert.

05/23/12 – Eugene Mirman is a comedian and hero who lives in Brooklyn, NY. He is a regular on Flight of the Conchords, Adult Swim’s Delocated, had his own special on Comedy Central, and voices Gene in the new animated Fox series Bob’s Burgers. Don’t miss him here at St. Lawrence Arts on May 23rd at 7PM; $10-12 Currently, Mirman plays comedian/mobster Yvgeny Mirminsky on Adult Swim’s Delocated and does the voice of Gene on Fox’s new animated series Bob’s Burgers. In the streets he’s sometimes recognized as Eugene, the landlord, from Flight of the Conchords. On Aqua Teen Hunger Force he’s Dr. Eugene Mirman and on Home Movies he was Eugene, the Russian foreign exchange student. Eugene hates auditioning for things, but likes being cast as Eugene in stuff (hopefully he will play Eugene, the baby on Mad Men, one day). Eugene also had his own half hour special on Comedy Central and in 2009 was named Best New York City Comedian by the Village Voice and one of the 10 best comedians of the last decade by Paste Magazine. He’s released three comedy albums (the last two on Sub Pop records) and a parody-ish self-help book from Harper Collins Perennial, The Will to Whatevs. Along with Julie Smith and Caroline Creaghead, Eugene puts on Pretty Good Friends, an informal (but award-winning!) weekly comedy show in the basement of Union Hall in Brooklyn on Sunday nights. The three of them also produce what began as a joke and has become the annual Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, which celebrates comedy Eugene likes while satirizing comedy festivals. http://www.eugenemirman.com

05/24/12 – Join us on Thursday May 24th as we proudly premier Chistopher Giamo’s feature film In Shopian at 7PM. Tickets will soon be on-sale through Brown Paper Tickets. For more information on the film and to see its trailer please visit http://www.inshopian.com For the past sixty years, Kashmir has languished under the Indian Army’s occupation. Since the beginning of a popular uprising in 1989, it’s estimated that over 70,000 Kashmiris have been killed in the conflict. In Shopian presents one such case. On May 29th, 2009, Shakeel Ahmed Ahangur, a Kashmiri man living in the town of Shopian, returned home from work to find his wife and sister missing. After notifying the police and searching through the night, he discovered their battered bodies in a nearby river. Although the initial post-mortem stipulated that they had been gang-raped and murdered, the Indian Government’s Central Bureau of Investigation later changed the ruling to death by accidental drowning. The incident immediately sparked massive strikes and protests against the Indian occupation, and continues to be a rallying cry for human rights and Kashmiri pro-freedom activists. Filmed in 2010, In Shopian presents a firsthand account of Shakeel’s story amidst the current state of social unrest in the capital Srinagar and outlying rural areas. It features rare on-site interviews with Kashmiri separatist leaders, as well as street battles between local youths and police. Shakeel’s story is a contextualized example of the plight of ordinary Kashmiris, and an aesthetic portrait of present-day Kashmir as a torn paradise.

For more than four decades, Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman have been writing and performing songs that helped make their generation’s musical memories, all the while inspiring a generation of young singer songwriters. Video!

Bettencourt is a songwriter at heart, expertly crafting a wide range of tunes around his scratchy, Janis Joplin-esque voice. Whether equipped with just an acoustic guitar, or with his whole backing band, Bettencourt combines folk, blues, and classic rock elements into always-pleasing melodic concoctions. He has admittedly learned from the rock gods themselves – Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Dylan – but is able to stay contemporary, also drawing on current artists like Iron and Wine and Ray LaMontagne.

Longtime disciple of the rich and strange music that sings behind the American veil, Jeffrey Foucault has spent the last decade mining the darker seams of country and blues, producing a string of spare and elemental albums of rare power while garnering accolades across the United States and overseas for a tersely elegant brand of songwriting set apart by its haunting imagery and weather-beaten cool.

The Importance of Being Earnest, Wilde’s classic high-farce comedy written in 1895, is ‘A Trivial Comedy for Serious People’. It is a story where the main protagonists maintain fictitious personae, allowing them to escape from burdensome social and personal obligations, whilst finding unexpected love. Reflecting, and at the same time undermining and trivializing, the social conventions of late Victorian British society – with themes that resonate down the ages – Wilde’s story is full of wit, intricate wordplay and handbags (!); showing the playwright at the height of his brilliant career.

The first floor of Johnson Hall Performing Arts Center is renovated and active in presenting year-round arts programming and rentals by the community, already bringing in many people for professional concerts and plays, teen band shows, and children’s arts camps. The tours will encourage visitors to imagine what the restoration of the entire building with a 360-seat theater can do for the region, by increasing opportunities for arts programs, big-name entertainers, expanded children’s arts education, small conferences, and more. When theaters are renovated, audience members seek restaurants and shops, businesses appreciate activities for their employees, and economic development follows.

Friday, May 04, 2012 8:00 PM

The son of musician Wayne Scott, James Darrell Scott was born August 6, 1959, on a tobacco farm in London, KY, and moved as a child to East Gary, IN. He was playing professionally by his teens in Southern California, later living in Toronto and Boston. He attended Tufts University, where he studied poetry and literature. Finally, he relocated to Nashville to get into the country music business. He has appeared on albums by Guy Clark, Martina McBride, Sam Bush, Suzy Bogguss, Randy Travis, Maura O’Connell, Tim O’Brien and many, many more, singing and playing banjo, Dobro, guitar, bass, and pedal steel.

Darrell’s web site features a bio written by him (how rare!) – and he sums it up best: KENTUCKY:

my people came from kentucky- poor tobacco farmers of first half 20th century and harlan county coal miners decades ahead of that – descendants of scots & irish – they brought their music with them

BAPTIZED

from silver haired daddy to momma’s hungry eyes i was baptized in country music – our first vacation (after my dad working in gary, indiana steel mills for 6 years) was to nashville, tn. & the grand ole opry we’d been listening to on radio – i got my first instrument at a pawn shop on broadway (1965) the following year, my mom dressed her kentucky best and marched into the 4 big labels in nashville (rca, capitol, columbia, decca) and got as far as the desk receptionist to leave a 45 of Wayne Scott & The 3 Ds (my brothers and i were the 3Ds) – i was 7 then – country music was the background music of my childhood

LONG RIDE HOME

this is a country recording- 16 songs that travel as far back as 30 years- 2 songs (The Country Boy and You’re Everything I Wanted Love To Be) written at 16, with my dad, Wayne Scott, when he rented a cabin in big bear lake, california just for us to write (we each finished the others’ song) – there is a duet with Guy Clark (Out In The Parking Lot) on a song Guy & i wrote together – there are guest vocals from Rodney Crowell (Hopkinsville), Tim Obrien & John Cowan (No Love In Arkansas & Too Close Too Comfort), and Patty Griffin (You’ll Be With Me All The Way)

THE PLAYERS

i recorded the album at home where we sat up around the grand piano where THE pianist of country music, Hargus “pig” Robbins, presided (pig started recording in nashville in 1957 – the 1st hit he played on: George Jones’ ‘White Lightnin’) – on drums, my kayak/bicycling friend, Kenny Malone, a studio legend since 1975 (his 1st hit was Dobie Gray’s ‘Drift Away’) – on upright bass: Dennis Crouch (we’d played together in Steve Earle’s Bluegrass Dukes & Dennis has played on virtually all T Bone Burnett’s recordings for the last 10 years & toured with Elvis Costello, Elton John, Robert Plant & Alisson Krauss) – we 4 were the tracking band – then i stayed with legends: Lloyd Green on pedal steel (Don Williams, Charlie Pride), on harmonicas: Charlie McCoy (everyone from Dylan to Cash) & Mickey Raphael (Willie) – then singers, Marcus Hummon, Jonell Mosser & Kathy Chiavola (from Dixie Chicks to Emmylou Harris) and mixed & mastered by Ray Kennedy (Lucinda Williams, Malcolm Holcomb)

it is country music how i remember it – with some of the players that made the very music that was both lifting & breaking my heart as a kid – what i find is the country music industry has changed, but country & working people have not changed so much- they still love country music when they hear it – i hope they get to hear this a long ride home.

Mark Erelli embodies many of the best qualities of the folk-populist lineage that began with Woody Guthrie, and is carried today by Bruce Springsteen and others. His voice, a beautiful combination of wine and whiskey, is as intimately conversational as a fireside chat. And, by exploring some of the big themes of American life–family, redemption, war and love, among others–and by describing how those themes affect a single life, he makes topical songs personal.

Saturday, May 05, 2012 8:00 PM

Maine-native Rachel Efron is delighted to celebrate the release of her latest and most ambitious album yet, Put Out The Stars. Named for its boldest track, it continues Efron’s inquiry into the inner life — replete with its beauty, danger, grief, joy, and surprise. What separates this album from her previous works — Say Goodbye and 4am — is its immediacy. It is as though the window to her mind and heart has been wiped clean; as though the audience has been invited to sit just a little bit closer.

Efron recorded Put Out The Stars at the world-renowned Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, with the help of all-star producer Jeffrey Wood and top-notch performers such as Scott Amendola (Madeleine Peyroux), Dawn Richardson (Four Non-Blondes, Tracy Chapman), and Paul Olguin (Mazzy Star). Standout tracks include the dark and saucy Too Soon, the wistful waltz, Marigold, and of course the deeply-felt, no holds barred Put Out The Stars. The soundscape of the album includes drums, bass, strings, accordion, gypsy violin, and trumpet, but these instruments only hang on the centerpiece of Rachel’s sound, which remains the simple intimacy of piano and voice.

A recent Berklee College of Music graduate, Liz Longley is already showing signs of becoming the next acoustic breakout artist. In 2010, Liz received first prize in the BMI John Lennon Scholarship competition, grand prize in the International Acoustic Music Award contest (among 9,000 entries) as well as the Chris Austin Songwriting Award. She also appeared at the Newport and Rocky Mountain folk festivals. In 2009, Liz garnered first place in the Rocky Mountain Folk Fest Songwriter Showcase, and was co-winner of the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest, among several other honors.

OLS Revisits our Roots with Music Movie Mondays! From the blues and folk revivals of the early 60s, to the rock festivals of the late 60’s, One Longfellow Square has gathered some of the most remarkable performances ever filmed! With our Music Movie Mondays series, we will present films and programs that feature some of the finest musicians and moments of the decade. Please join us as we happily and joyfully bring these films to the Square!

American Folk Blues Festival, Monday, May 7, 7 pm

From 1962 through 1966, the best American blues musicians went on annual tours of Europe. Many of them appeared on a tv show in Germany. The shows recorded the best performers while they were still in their prime. Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, Sippie Wallace and many others all played on the show. The shows were recorded, then the tapes were lost…but after 30 years, they were found, and they are astounding! Full performances, with excellent sound and video quality, not those choppy, grainy clips you see in most documentaries. This is the best!

The $3 service fee is not added to this show.

Price: $7.00

Wednesday, May 09, 2012 6:00 PM

The Multicultural Program @ the Center for Grieving Children presents Inner Strength a CD release party.

A celebration and expression from children @ the Multicultural Program at the Center for Grieving Children.

An intercultural and intriguing medley of speakers and performers will showcase music written by students resettled from war-torn countries.

The album Inner Strength grew from collaboration between University of Southern Maine (USM) and the Multicultural Program @ the Center for Grieving Children. Three years ago, four USM media studies students collaborated with the Center on a service learning project, which resulted in the production of a short film entitled Walk a Mile in My Shoes. During this course of the project, senior media studies major, Billy Libby, experienced realization about the healing that occurs in community and the power of the expressive qualities that art, play and theater have on processing intercultural responses to change and loss with children.

With guitar in hand, Billy Libby joined the group, bringing songwriting into the fold. With support from the Center volunteers, Your Song, Your Story and the Center’s staff, the children as authors, and music directors, have created the seven songs on Inner Strength. The children’s songs have themes ranging from the power of love, to issues such as isolation, war and racism, to the power of community support in rising above insurmountable obstacles.

(2011) Cannes Film Festival Grand Jury Prize Winner!

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, the deeply moving new film by brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (L’Enfant, Rosetta) delves into the emotional life of troubled 11-year-old Cyril, played with riveting intensity by newcomer Thomas Doret. When his father (Jérémie Renier) abandons him, Cyril at first refuses to admit it, claiming his father just forgot to say where he was going. Eventually forced to face hard reality, Cyril then obsessively tries to get his bicycle back (also missing). Almost by accident, he becomes the ward of a kind hairdresser (Cécile de France, Hereafter, L’Auberge Espanole), a woman who seems surprised to find herself so determined to help him. With his wild, unpredictable behavior and his disastrous search for father figures, Cyril risks losing her—though she refuses to give up without a fight. Full of heartbreaking betrayals and unexpected grace, The Kid with a Bike is a film about a child alone, learning to become good. Nominated for 4 European Film Awards, winning Best Screenplay. (Fully subtitled)

Screening May 3rd

Jamie Nabozny grew up in Ashland, a small town in northern Wisconsin on the south shore of Lake Superior. His life changed drastically when he was targeted in middle school for being gay. His years of harassment ended with a beating that put him in hospital and required abdominal surgery. The Southern Poverty Law Center produced a documentary titled “Bullied” that chronicles his life. Jamie now speaks out for the millions of kids bullied in our schools everyday. He travels the country and shares his story so that no child has to endure what he endured. Jamie was recently named a Defender of Human Rights by the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights.

One day, inexplicably, her zest for life and love is rekindled by a most unlikely source, her seemingly unexceptional, gauche, and average looking office subordinate, Markus (French comic star Francois Damiens, Heartbreaker). At first stunned by Nathalie’s unexpected attention, Markus comes to gradually believe in her feelings and shifts into romantic high gear. As their relationship goes from awkward to genuinely loving, Nathalie and Markus will have to overcome a host of obstacles including everyone else’s judgmental perceptions as well as their own self-doubts.
(2011) First Friday Film Series Co-Presented By The Farnsworth & The Strand

“It’s pointless to talk about painting.” — Gerhard Richter (1965). Richter, considered one of the world’s greatest living painters and now nearly 80 years old, agreed to talk about his work, as a small film crew documents his creative process. Blunt, provocative, unashamedly curmudgeonly and iconoclastic (but never cynical), the artist says he’s “interested in things he doesn’t understand,” that “painting is a secretive business,” and that “each painting is an assertion that tolerates no company.” “You have to distrust your parents and see through them.” Born in 1932 in Dresden (which became East Germany), he left for the West nearly 30 years later. When his American gallerist Marian Goodman visits, they recall a 1984 show which began their relationship. Extensive contemporary scenes of the artist

painting and interviews from the 1960s and ’70s give a sense of his creative development — his colorful abstractions, photorealist portraits, and paintings inspired by politics and history as well as more intimate statements. His final words as he applies and then scrapes off vast globs of paint: “Man, is this fun.” (In English and German with English subtitles)

This film is part of a series in collaboration with The Farnsworth Art Museum presented monthly on first Fridays focusing on artists and the visual arts. All screenings are hosted by Farnsworth Director of Education Roger Dell and include a guest speaker(s) and a discussion following the film.

“Fascinating. Mr. Richter remains an excellent subject, serious and purposeful but also unexpectedly good-natured. –Rachel Saltz, The New York Times

Four stars! Critics’ Pick. Mesmerizing!” – Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York

“Mesmerizing. Belz’s film itself (is) a gorgeously rendered work of art.” – Alissa Simon, Variety

(2012) A New Documentary Film by Susan Froemke

The stakes could not be higher as one of the theater’s finest stage directors teams up with one of the world’s leading opera companies to tackle opera’s most monumental challenge: a new production of Wagner’s Ring cycle—the four-part, 16-hour work that the composer first presented in 1876. For the past 130 years, the quest to produce a perfect Ring has stymied directors, including Wagner himself, who struggled to meet the immense theatrical demands of his own creation. The tale of gods and mortals vying for power and destroyed by greed calls for firestorms, flying warriors, underwater struggle, and heavenly actions.

Wagner’s Dream takes you deep into the artistic and musical challenges of the epic work. Visionary director Robert Lepage begins a five-year journey to create the most ambitious staging in Metropolitan Opera history, featuring a 90,000-pound set (“The Machine”) designed to realize all of Wagner’s scenic instructions. The film follows heroic singers from rehearsals to performance as they take on many of the most daunting roles in opera. Soprano Deborah Voigt is torn between excitement and fear as she prepares to play the warrior goddess Brünnhilde, while unexpected drama arises as a new tenor, Jay Hunter Morris, steps in as the Ring’s hero, Siegfried—days before the production’s world premiere.

An intimate look at the challenges of live theater and the risks that must be taken, the film chronicles the tremendous creativity and unflagging determination behind this daring attempt to realize Wagner’s dream of a perfect Ring.

"Why paint about sculpture? What will it reveal? Does it work in Sutherland's case? Yes, because Degas' form--the young dancer--is a realization by him of a painter's vision and not that of a sculptor, and so Sutherland is closer to the source than she might otherwise be.
(2011) Strarring Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt, & Kristin Scott Thomas

Lasse Halstrom, the beloved director of Chocolat, The Cidar House Rules, and My Life As A Dog, leads a stellar cast including Emily Blunt, Ewan McGregor, and Kristen Scott-Thomas in one of the most charming films of the year, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. A visionary sheik (Amr Waked) believes his passion for the peaceful pastime of salmon fishing can enrich the lives of his people, and he dreams of bringing the sport to the not so fish-friendly desert. Willing to spare no expense, he instructs his representative (Emily Blunt) to turn the dream into reality, an extraordinary feat that will require the involvement of Britain’s leading fisheries expert (Ewan McGregor) who happens to think the project both absurd and unachievable. That is, until the Prime Minister’s overzealous press secretary (Kristin Scott Thomas) latches on to it as a ‘good will’ story. Now, this unlikely team will put it all on the line and embark on an upstream journey of faith and fish to prove the impossible, possible.

“a surprisingly lush, endearing little film, in which a swelling sense of romanticism thoroughly banishes even the most far-fetched improbabilities”—Washington Post.

UK/2011/PG-13, 1hr 47 min

Directed by Lasse Hallström

Starring Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt, Kristin Scott Thomas, Rachael Stirling, Amr Waked, Tom Mison, Catherine Steadman, and Jill Baker

(2010) Film Series Co-presented by The Strand and The Camden International Film Festival

Inspired by Pythagoras’s belief in four-fold transmigration — by which the soul is passed from human to animal to vegetable to mineral — Michelangelo Frammartino’s wondrous docu-essay traces the cycle of life through the daily rituals of life in the southern Italian region of Calabria.

“Its view of nature is among the most profound, expansive and unsettling I have ever encountered on film…Mr. Frammartino’s eye for both comedy and mystery produces compositions that are so strange and memorable that they seem to reinvent the very act of perception.” – A.O. Scott, The New York Times

2011/Italy/88mins/UR
Directed by Michelangelo Frammartino

Starting in March, the Camden International Film Festival will be teaming up with the Strand Theatre to host a monthly screening series taking place on the 3rd Thursday of every month. The series is part of CIFF Selects, a touring screening series celebrating nonfiction filmmaking and darn good stories. Films will be followed by a Q&A with filmmakers sometimes in person, sometimes via skype. Most importantly, these are films that will enlighten and entertain.

The Camden International Film Festival will take place from September 27 – 30, 2012, screening over 50 documentary features and shorts at various venues throughout Camden and Rockland, Maine.

(2011) Showing 2 Days Only!

This clandestine documentary, shot partially on an iPhone and smuggled into France in a cake for a last-minute submission to Cannes, depicts the day-to-day life of acclaimed film director Jafar Panahi during his house arrest in his Tehran apartment. Panahi received a 6-year prison sentence and a 20-year ban from filmmaking and conducting interviews with foreign press due to his open support of the opposition party in Iran’s 2009 election. The film, which reflects on the meaning of the art of filmmaking (what is and is not a film?) as well as the deprivations looming in contemporary Iranian cinema, was secretly shot on an iPhone and a modest DV camera by Panahi’s close friend Mojtaba Mirtahmasb while Panahi waited for a decision on his appeal. Since his detention in 2009, Panahi’s cause has won international support from the international film community including who have signed letter’s of support and an Amnesty International petition calling for his release. This is do-it-yourself, imaginative, revolutionary filmmaking at its zenith.

“That one of the most consistently amusing and enlivening movies to emerge from this year’s crop of festival films should have been made by a filmmaker under house arrest, his hands pretty much tied, his budget and equipment nil, just goes to prove that you can’t keep a good man down.” —Philip Lopate, Film Comment

“There is a charm and grace to this “not” film that mirrors all of Panahi’s

Wednesday, May 2 at 9:30am and 12 noon

Recommended for grades K-3

Main Stage

Skippyjon Jones is a little kitten with big ears and even bigger dreams! Sometimes he pretends to be a bird, sometimes he pretends to be a llama, and sometimes he pretends to be a whale…anything BUT a Siamese cat! Based on the books by Judy Schachner, Skippyjon Jones is an enchanting musical about unleashing your powerful imagination and following your dreams.

Though this performance is offered as a school show, the public is invited to attend. Please call 873-7000 in advance to reserve tickets.

Behind the Curtain…

In under 48 hours, the balcony went from 0 seats to 447 seats! We were all impressed by how quickly the crew from Irwin Seating worked, but they said this was small job compared to redoing thousands of seats in stadiums.

The balcony before Irwin’s workers arrived. (The red orchestra seats made the trip to the balcony so we could check sightlines.)

The stanchions between seats are installed. The armrests came next.

All of the comfortable, level seats are now in! The last step – and perhaps one of the most time-consuming – was individually nailing on the seat numbers.
