Cast members in the Robinson Players’ production of "The Laramie Project": Alanna Hoffman ’15 as the Narrator; Nick Auer ’15 as Jon Peacock, Matthew Shepard’s academic advisor; Jonathan Schwolsky ’15 as Tectonic Theater Project member Andy Paris.

Seeking to spark constructive dialogue on campus and in the community, a student theater group at Bates College presents Moisés Kaufman’s The Laramie Project in performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12. All shows are in Gannett Theater, Pettigrew Hall, 305 College St.

Tickets are $5 and available at the door. Proceeds go to Outright L/A, a Lewiston-Auburn organization that supports LGBTQ youth in a safe and affirming environment. For more information, please contact mschloss@bates.edu.

A 4 p.m. panel discussion follows the Sunday performance in Gannett Theater. Featured are members of the production; Heather Lindkvist, director of the Diversity in Excellence Leadership Team at Bates; and members of OUTfront, an LGBTQ advocacy group on campus. Refreshments will be served.

Time magazine described The Laramie Project as “a pioneering work and a powerful stage event.” The play captures the voices of residents of Laramie, Wyo., following the brutal 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student who was gay.

Immediately following the murder, members of the New York City-based Tectonic Theater Project traveled to Laramie, seeking “the story of the people of Laramie in their own words,” as the troupe’s website states.

Led by Tectonic artistic director Kaufman, they returned repeatedly over the next two years to collect interviews. The result is a script comprising 40 haunting and authentic narratives structured as a series of “moments” supported by monologues.

The play, produced by the Robinson Players, is co-directed by senior Michelle Schloss of Unionville, Conn.; and junior Spencer Collet of Leawood, Kan. Schloss and Collet’s theatrical strengths complement each other: The former is a seasoned director while the latter has a strong acting background. Accordingly, Schloss focuses on mapping character movement, and Collet on developing the monologues.

“The play doesn’t make any argument at all,” Schloss explains. “It focuses on the community and asks: Why did this happen here? It shows all the different viewpoints and lets those sink in.”

Collet adds, “You get all of these very intense issues presented at once in a way that’s compelling because they come from real people. If it does anything, The Laramie Projectcelebrates our differences no matter what they are. We are not making any definitive judgment — apart from, hate is wrong. ”

Fairly and effectively dramatizing these differences has tested the Robinson Players. Collet explains, “The biggest challenge is to present it so that people don’t come away saying, ‘Those people there must be terrible.’ All groups portrayed in this show are given an equal say.”

“Every opinion, whether or not people here agree with it, is valid and real,” Schloss agrees.

Departing from a decade-plus of annual Robinson productions of The Vagina Monologues,Laramie engages contemporary discourse on gender and sexuality. Collet, who performed in the play in high school and suggested it to the Bates company, intended it to be a catalyst for student and community dialogue.

Accordingly, the company has teamed up with OUTfront to develop the post-show panel. OUTfront also suggested Outright L/A as the organization to receive the proceeds.

Schloss and Collet praise the 14 actors for their maturity and focus in playing characters who are unlike them and for tackling the challenge of playing 40 characters. “Every single member of this cast is phenomenal, and I’ve never been in a theater situation where you have that,” states Collet.

Among the players are:

Nick Auer, a first-year from Fairfield, Conn., who portrays Aaron McKinney, one of Shepard’s assailants;

Charles Emple, a senior from Swampscott, Mass., who plays a member of the Tectonic Theater Project, as well as Aaron Kriefels, who found Shepard and placed the 911 call;

Jennifer Flanagan, a senior from Sherborn, Mass., playing an administrative assistant at the university;

MacKenzie Pendergast, a first-year student from Greenwich, Conn., who plays Reggie Fluty, the policewoman who responded to Kriefels’ 911 call;

Liam Zaaijer, a senior from South Orange, N.J., who portrays a limousine driver in Laramie and also Father Roger Schmidt, the minister who held the first candlelight vigil for Shepard.

Travis Jones, a junior from Ithaca, N.Y., is responsible for the set design, and senior Ian Dulin of Bennington, Vt., created the lighting design.

Since its premiere in 2000, more than 30 million people around the country have seen Laramieat high schools, colleges, community theaters and professional playhouses.

Modeling Nigerian dresses for the Inside Africa Fashion Show are first-year students (from left) Folarera Fasawe, Michelle Pham and fashion show host Nicole Kanu.

Traditional and contemporary fashions from Africa are the focus of Bates’ premiere Inside Africa Fashion Show, starting at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St.

Sponsored by the Africana Club, a student organization, the event is open to the public at no cost. For more information, please contact nkanu@bates.edu.

In addition to students modeling apparel from 10 African nations, the program includes a dance from the Congo, a performance of Ghana’s popular Azonto mime dancing and a rendition of the South African national anthem by the Gospelaires, a choir composed of singers from Bates and Lewiston-Auburn.

“I thought it would be interesting to invite Bates and the community to see Africa,” explains Nicole Kanu, who conceived of the show and will host it. A first-year student from Little Rock, Ark., she is the daughter of a Nigerian couple. “Many look at Africa as one country and fail to realize that it is a continent that contains many countries.

“The Inside Africa Fashion Show will take the audience into Africa and focus on some of the smallest differences between countries — in their attire. This show is about Africa today.”

The show will follow a plot depicting a student who is backpacking through Africa. “Each stop she makes shows her a different aspect,” Kanu says. At the end of the fashion show, the backpacking student will bring Africa back to America as models demonstrate how to mix and match American and African apparel.

A year after he disappeared, Walker Janeway returns to hear the reading of his father’s will. After an evening of harrowing and sometimes comically inadvertent revelations between Walker, his sister Nan, and Pip, the son of his father’s business partner, we travel back to 1960 and meet the parents at the same age their children are in Act One. In the guise of a love story, we are offered all the information needed to devise an alternative reading of the sad, unexpectedly romantic family story.

Club Aims

Bowdoin Taiko, est. fall 2002, is a learning-oriented club whose goal is to teach Taiko to Bowdoin College and the Brunswick community, and to perform in concerts, dance shows, and other venues. Our songs are handed down year-to-year, building in repitoire with each new leader, who teaches during practice times. In addition, Bowdoin Taiko occasionally will host professional taiko players to give workshops and/or demonstrations. Bowdoin Taiko will teach interested people the proper rhythms, stances, and movements of traditional, modern, and original taiko pieces.

Workshops and Performances

Taiko concerts make great additions to outdoor festivals, parades, school assemblies, and any sort of party with enough room and a hunger for loud noises. If you are interested in sponsoring a Bowdoin Taiko concert, please contact us! We also welcome new members – if you are interested, we recommend that you join near the beginning of the fall or spring semester.

“The Descendants is that rare bird, moving, enlightening, funny and unapologetically human. It’s one of the year’s best pictures, one to savor and think about.” -Box Office Magazine

From Oscar winning director Alexander Payne (Sideways), The Descendants is a sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic journey for Matt King (George Clooney) an indifferent husband and father of two girls, who is forced to re-examine his past and embrace his future when his wife suffers a boating accident off of Waikiki, Hawaii. The event leads to a rapprochement with his young daughters while Matt wrestles with a decision to sell the family’s land handed down from Hawaiian royalty and missionaries. Funny, moving, and beautifully acted, The Descendants captures the unpredictable messiness of life with eloquence and uncommon grace. (2011)

“One of the most curious and perversely brilliant films ever made in the American studio system.
Saturday, February 4th, 10am – 1pm

Registration: $15

The moment your character steps out on stage, the audience reads and registers that character’s physical presence, stance, movement. We’re so used to doing this in life that we bring the skill to the theater with us. The actor’s job is to use his or her own body to reflect that of another person. This Movement for Actors workshop will start with some simple limbering exercise and progress quickly into working with imagery. Participants will then try out a wide range of characters – animals, objects, humans of various ages, occupations, social classes. During the last section, everyone will select one character to develop more fully. Appropriate for all ages and
physical abilities – even if you come in a wheel chair. Please wear comfortable clothing.

Instructor: Carol Korty began her professional career in theater as a modern dancer and studied dance technique and choreography with some of the greats of the 20th century. Don’t miss out on her workshop!

A new play by Nicholas Wright

How had a twenty–two–year–old pretentious layabout made a discovery that would elude everyother cinematic pioneer for years to come?

In a remote village in Eastern Europe, around 1900, the young Motl Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father’s cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary
way of story-telling. Forty years on, Motl – now a famed American film director – looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams.

Following Vincent in Brixton and The Reporter, Nicholas Wright’s new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s golden age. The award-winning Antony Sher – whose previous work with the National Theatre includes Primo and Stanley – returns to play Jacob.

Simply one of the best female singers I have ever heard. Songs like “Where have all the Cowboys Gone” and “I Don’t Want to Wait” put her on the list of chart busters. But the first time I heard her she was singing back up for Peter Gabriel. When he featured her, it was clear by the hush and then roar of the crowd that she was headed for bigger and better things. Of course her star rose quickly and now we are lucky to be able to present her in our humble hall. Just what we need to warm a January evening. The only cool, will be the styling of her emotionally charged voice singing her own songs of life, love and a philosophy that is all her own. Don’t miss it.

Featuring Sea Biscuit – This is one of my favorite movies. I stumbled on the trailer the other day and it made me cry all over again. It is a great underdog story about a famous racehorse, who beat all the odds, but also about the people who believed in him. Set during the depression it was a time in history when folks sure needed some hope and inspiration. I would say we here in 2012 could use a dose of it too. Rated PG-13. Not recommended for little ones. There is some nudity and profanity, but it also has a few tragic scenes that I think young ones should be spared.
So come join us for this heart warming movie…and of course fill up on our yummy pasta and salad buffet. Your ticket includes the dinner buffet (beverages not included)

A few very important “by the ways” before you order
1. Please use cash or checks only when you come to a show…….
We do take credit cards for tickets only, but when you come here to the Arts Center we ask that you try to use cash or checks. We appreciate the convenience of using plastic for online purchasing, but we don’t want to raise our food and beverage prices to cover the cost of credit card processing. If it’s all ya got that night, we will take it of course…we have even taken IOU’s! We are very flexible.
2. Why is there a handling fee?
We get this question a lot. A handling fee is a necessary evil for us to collect what we need to bring the performer here, sell the tickets, and keep it personal which is what this experience is all about. We try to keep it a low as possible. We know you enjoy talking to Marlies or Katy or me to get your tickets or tell us some of your special requests. Like when you call to ask if you “made a dinner reservation” or “can we squeeze one more at our table”, or “what time is the show” or “I have a dietary issue”. You won’t get to do that anywhere else. That personal touch costs a little more, but I think you would agree its worth it and we would like to remain a place where you can talk to someone. Besides, a lot of venues with automated ticketing charge handling fees anyway….most much higher than us.

3. Our Dinner .…
Most nights our dinner menu consists of three specials which could include entrees like, chowder, chili, pasta, a meatloaf or a pork roast dinner, two to three pizzas and two salads that can be topped with seafood or chicken……anything that can be prepared and served quickly since we are often serving 150 people in about 45 minutes. We want it to be delicious, fast, affordable, and small to avoid waste (and that can limit our options). It is hard for us to do special orders, but if you have any dietary issues we welcome you to call us so we can try to accommodate you ahead of time.

Dinner is served most nights from 6 – 7:15 pm. The kitchen will stop taking orders forty-five minutes before the performance starts in order to avoid any disturbance while the artist performs. Because our space is limited, tables are generally for four, six, eight or ten. Tables for two are rare. You will likely make some new friends while you are here. If you prefer a table for just two, be sure to reserve a Table for Two with a View in our Balcony.

4. Can we bring children to the show?
I will never say you cannot bring your child to a show…but I will say, most shows are not appropriate for a small child or a baby who may not have the attention span of an adult. It is a rare young child who can sit through a concert without fussing….if you have one of those rare children, bring’em along by all means. But I have seen children here too young to even be up by the time the show starts, never mind sit through it…and the child has become understandably fussy. That fussiness will and has disturbed the folks around you who have spent their hard earned money to see a show in a distraction free environment. It will also totally stress you out. Our place is very intimate and very little noise can be times ten here. It is really just a matter of common sense and courtesy when it comes to deciding to bring your children or not.

5. Sponsors….
Sponsors are businesses that support a show financially in trade for advertising and exposure. They are a major organ to the intricate body that is SMAC…. and we never have enough of them. We have thousands of people locally and from away visiting our site and our hall each month. Its a great way to reach them and support us at the same time. If you’d like more information about our advertising / sponsor opportunities, click here.

6. Ticket Prices.…..
Our ticket prices are based on the artist fee which is the same regardless of the venue seating capacity. If the ticket is high it is because the artist fee is high. Our choice is to charge what we charge to cover their fee or not bring that big artist here at all. We know our audience enjoys the unique experience of an up close and personal performance by their favorites yet we also try to have a variety of shows for a variety of pocketbooks.

7. Why do we do this?….
We do this because we wanted to bring music to the country. As residents we felt there was a void in quality concert production, not only in our area but all over New England, and thought we could make a difference. We never imagined it would take off like it has, and “if you build it, people really will come”. We have tried and will continue to try to make this one of the most special concert experiences possible. If you keep comin’, we will keep strummin’ !

Director Judy Lloyd to accept award TOMORROW, January 27th

The Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce has announced that Johnson Hall will receive a Community Service award for 2012. We are honored to be chosen for this award. Executive Director Judy Lloyd will accept the award at a gala dinner at the Augusta Civic Center on Friday, January 27. Johnson Hall is especially pleased that the Chamber of Commerce recognizes that the arts enrich and strengthen our communities, and are important to a flourishing economic climate. The award comes at a wonderful moment, as we seek lead donors for our campaign for the renovation of the second and third floors of the historic building into a 360-seat theater.

We hear there are still a few seats available at the dinner. $50 per person. Contact the KV Chamber at 623-4559. Read more about the awards banquet here.

Liz Frame and the Kickers

Friday, February 03, 2012 8:00 PM

Liz Frame wrote her first song at age nine, and has been performing her own brand of rootsy Americana music since her early teens. She spent her childhood listening to the artists her parents loved – Jimmie Rogers, The Weavers, B.B. King, Elvis Presley – to name just a few, absorbing their sounds and ultimately allowing them to influence her own. At fourteen she picked up the guitar and has been hooked on the process of making music ever since. In 1980, after years of travel with her family that allowed Ms. Frame to see dozens of US states and several continents, she and her family finally settled outside of Boston, Massachusetts. Shortly thereafter, she began seriously pursuing a career in music, becoming an active member of the country music/rockabilly scene in the city during the eighties and nineties. Fronting her own band, she garnered serious interest from both major and independent record labels during this time, but ultimately decided against the rigors of the business to concentrate on family. Now that her daughter, a gifted working musician in her own right, is grown, she is once again free to pursue what she loves most – making infectious, heart-felt and at times raucous music that appeals to everyone from eight to eighty!
While Ms. Frame delivers her songs with strong, distinctive vocals that fall somewhere between Dwight Yoakum’s twang and k.d lang’s soul, one can’t listen to her music without also hearing the influences of people like Merle Haggard or Johnny Cash. She is backed live by her band, the Kickers, a group of talented friends whose raw, acoustic sound and sweet harmonies help to deliver Ms. Frame’s material with distinction. They play regularly around the north shore of Massachusetts and are fast becoming a favorite of the area.

Saturday, February 04, 2012 8:00 PM

A veteran of long years on the Boston club scene and a stint as sideman to former J. Geils Band frontman Peter Wolf, guitarist Johnny A. originally self-released this masterful, tasteful solo record to much local acclaim, and then guitar ace Steve Vai added the musician to the roster of his label. Proving that the term “guitar god” has too often been misapplied in the post- Van Halen era of diddly-squeak school of soloing, Johnny A. draws on a more classic pantheon of American fret deity for inspiration, including Chet Atkins , Scotty Moore, James Burton, Nokie Edwards, and Wes Montgomery. And like the late Danny Gatton (whom the musician’s fiery solos recall), Johnny’s years as a sideman have taught him the importance of space and dynamics. The smoky, moody title track sets the tone. While his choice of covers (the Beatles’ “Yes It Is,” Jimmy Webb’s “Wichita Lineman,” and the Ventures’ signature “Walk, Don’t Run”) underscore his restraint, the guitarist proves his overdrive can burn with the best of them.

Johnny A. has paid his dues as one of Boston’s most admired rock guitarists. He’s played the clubs for years in various incarnations and is perhaps best known for anchoring Peter Wolf’s solo band. The latest turn in Johnny’s career is a CD of his own, “sometime tuesday morning.” It’s an instrumental disc in which he stretches his chops more widely than anyone expected – from swing/lounge music to pop, blues, and country. It combines the raw edge for which he is known, with a growing finesse and maturity. It’s music to do just about anything by – and has an erotic edge, as well.

Monday, February 06, 2012 7:00 PM

OLS Revisits our Roots with Music Movie Mondays! From the blues and folk revivals of the early 60s, to the rock festivals of the late 60’s, One Longfellow Square has gathered some of the most remarkable performances ever filmed! With our Music Movie Mondays series, we will present films and programs that feature some of the finest musicians and moments of the decade. Please join us as we happily and joyfully bring these films to the Square!

Music Movie Mondays: Devil Got My Woman
Monday, February 6, 7 pm

At the 1966 Newport Folk Festival, Alan Lomax recreated a traditional juke joint setting and atmosphere. He brought together some of the best blues musicians of the era, including Howlin Wolf, Son House, Bukka White and others for a night of playing, drinking, and general carryin’ on, all with the cameras rolling! Great songs and great musicians! If you’ve never seen this film, don’t miss it! And if you have seen it, you haven’t seen it at OLS in a room full of long-time blues fans. Be there! Distributed by Vestapol Productions (a division of Stefan Grossman’s Guitar Workshop, Inc.)

(1978) Focus On: The Films of Terrence Malick

DAYS OF HEAVEN is the long-awaited follow-up to Malick’s 1973 debut Badlands, and confirmed his reputation as a visual poet and narrative iconoclast with a story of love and murder told through the jaded voice of a child and expressive images of nature. In this love triangle set in the early 1900’s, Bill (Richard Gere) works in a Chicago steel mill, but must flee the city after accidentally killing a man. Heading for the wheat fields of Texas, he packs up his girlfriend (Brooke Adams) and his younger sister (Linda Manz). Instead of a better life, they head straight into tragedy when a wealthy farmer (Sam Shepard) falls for Adams. Believing him to be dying and expecting to inherit a fortune, she agrees to marry him. Their plans change and things turn tragic when the farmer fails to die and Bill takes matters into his own hands. Days Of Heaven is a gorgeous work about the immutability of the land, and the frailty of everything and everyone on it.

Written & Directed by Terrence Malick
Starring Richard Gere, Brooke Adams, Sam Shepherd, Linda Manz

FOCUS ON: THE FILMS OF TERRENCE MALICK
In January & February, the Strand will present a retrospective of the early work of American filmmaker Terrence Malick. Malick is one of the great enigmas of contemporary filmmaking, a shadowy figure whose towering reputation rests largely on a very small body of work. A visual stylist beyond compare, Malick emerged during the golden era of 1970s American movie-making, bringing to the screen a dreamlike, ethereal beauty countered by elliptical, ironic storytelling; resonant and mythic, his films illuminated themes of love and death with rare mastery, their indelible images distinguished by economy, precision, and detachment. Over the course of the last 40 years, Malick has only made 5 films. His latest THE TREE OF LIFE (2011), and THE NEW WORLD (2005) have both had a theatrical release at the Strand. We are proud to present the first three films by this remarkable director and filmmaker.

MET OPERA: Handel, Rameau, Vivaldi & others – World Premiere Production

In one extraordinary new work, lovers of Baroque opera have it all: the world’s best singers, glorious music of the Baroque masters, and a story drawn from Shakespeare. In The Enchanted Island, the lovers from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dreamare shipwrecked on his other-worldly island of The Tempest. Inspired by the musical pastiches and masques of the 18th century, the work showcases arias and ensembles by Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau, and others, and a new libretto by Jeremy Sams. Eminent conductor William Christie leads an all-star cast with David Daniels (Prospero) and Joyce DiDonato (Sycorax) as the formidable foes, Plácido Domingo as Neptune, Danielle de Niese as Ariel, and Luca Pisaroni as Caliban. Lisette Oropesa and Anthony Roth Costanzo play Miranda and Ferdinand. The dazzling production is directed and designed by Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch (Satyagraha and the Met’s 125 anniversary gala).(Approximate runtime 3hrs 44mins)

(2011) Winner of 2 Golden Globes Including Best Picture!

HELD OVER ANOTHER WEEK DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND! The Descendants won two Golden Globes awards: Best Picture (Drama) and Best Actor (Drama), George Clooney.

“The Descendants is that rare bird, moving, enlightening, funny and unapologetically human. It’s one of the year’s best pictures, one to savor and think about.” -Box Office Magazine
“A guaranteed multiple Oscar nominee and the film that cements Alexander Payne as one of the top filmmakers of his generation, The Descendants is nothing short of a masterpiece.” – Mark Rabinowitz, CNN.com
“Another beautifully chiseled piece of filmmaking – sharp, funny, generous, and moving – that writes its own rules as much as About Schmidt or Sideways did.” – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

Celebration Barn Has Been Awarded Maine Theater Fund

We’re thrilled to announce that the Maine Theater Fund of the Maine Community Foundation has granted the Barn $2,500 to support Celebration Ensemble’s premiere of Thumbs Up at the Portland Performing Arts Festival in June and to launch the Ensemble’s first tour.

Thumbs Up tells a funny and poignant story about the adventure of 20 year old Lexi who, while hitchhiking her way to Canada, finds herself in the company of wild mix of odd characters who all converge on a clam shack in Machias.

Building on Celebration’s Barn tradition of original and physically-based theater, Celebration Ensemble is a collaboration between Amanda Huotari, Kavi Montanaro, Ian Bannon, and Kelly Nesbitt. With backgrounds in music, photography, puppetry and improvisation, the foursome works collaboratively, telling stories through movement, character, and visual imagery. The show previewed at the Oddfellow Theater in April, 2011. This support from the Maine Community Foundation will go towards funding the premiere of the full production at the Portland Performing Arts Festival in June, 2012.

You can be sure that we’ll keep you updated with news about the upcoming festival performances!

OVERVIEW

“Dread throbs like a heartbeat in “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy,” a superb new adaptation of the 1974 spy novel by John le Carré. It’s a deep pulse that maintains its insistent rhythm throughout the film’s murmured conversations, life-and-death office intrigues, violence and yearning loves. The throbbing does a number on your nervous system—this is a movie you watch on high alert—and brings you into the state of mind that can feel like a state of siege and goes by the name of British secret service, or just the Circus. For those inside the intelligence service, like George Smiley, played with delicacy and understated power by Gary Oldman, knowledge is power, but so too is fear. The story, skillfully mined from Mr. le Carré’s labyrinthine book and set in 1973, is a pleasurably sly and involving puzzler—a mystery about mysteries within mysteries”—Manohla Dargis, New York Times. R. 127 Min.

Director Payne is a master of the human comedy, of the funny, moving and messy details that define a fallible life. In adapting the 2009 novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings, Payne has given George Clooney the context to deliver the finest, truest and most emotionally raw performance of his career…. Clooney’s Matt King owns 25,000 acres of Kauai paradise by inheritance and must decide to keep the land unspoiled or sell it to developers. Matt also has personal issues. A boating accident has left his neglected wife, Elizabeth in a coma and left Matt (the self-proclaimed “backup parent”) in charge of their two daughters, sass queen Scottie, 10, and seen-it-all Alexandra, 17, whose reckless ways with boys and drugs has landed her in boarding school. Just when Matt steps it up as a husband and father, life blindsides him. Payne… walks the high wire between humor and heartbreak with unerring skill. No net. Just when you think you have him figured, you haven’t. Want a movie you can really connect with? The Descendants is damn near perfect”—Peter Travers, Rolling Stone. R. 115 Min.

OVERVIEW

Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress: Kate Winslet and Jodie Foster!

Wow! What a cast! Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christopher Waltz and John C. Reilly star in the new film from old master Roman Polanski. “CARNAGE is one of the funniest and most intelligent films of the year. It is also joyously subversive of political correctness, showing the way it masks reality rather than reflects it. As in REPULSION and ROSEMARY’S BABY, Roman Polanski—still at the height of his powers at 78—shows with magnificent control the way character can disintegrate in a confined space, and the quartet of fine actors delivers memorable performances. Jodie Foster is Penelope, a self-consciously pious writer of impeccable liberalism. Her forthcoming tome is about the carnage in Darfur. She and her hardware salesman husband, Michael (John C. Reilly), arrange a meeting with the rich parents of a boy who has hit their child with a branch in the park. The visitors are Nancy, a high-flying broker (Kate Winslet), and Alan (Christoph Waltz), an amoral lawyer addicted to his mobile phone. Bent on reconciliation, they bring out the worst in each other, so that by the end—fuelled by scotch—there’s an orgy of drunken truth-telling. All the way through, though, you’ll have been laughing at their childishness, casual cruelty and ugly self-righteousness. It’s horribly accurate.”—The Mail. R. 80 Min.

These young people use rhythm and rhyme to express the power and passion of their life experiences, their fears, and their dreams. LOUDER THAN A BOMB won the 2011 Humanitas Prize for Documentaries that are entertaining, uplifting, and reveal our common humanity. “Inspiring and electrifying…Here are real performers with real feelings and important things to say.”—Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times. “Having a bad day? Then get yourself to Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel’s Louder Than a Bomb, immediately. Four Stars.”—Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News “An affecting and superbly paced celebration of American youth at their best…”—Robert Koehler, Variety. Unrated. 99 minutes.

HELD OVER ANOTHER WEEK DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND!

Drama/Comedy/USA/2011/115min/Rated R

Directed by Alexander Payne

Starring George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Beau Bridges, Robert Forster, Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard, Nick Krause, Amara Miller, Mary Birdsong, Rob Huebel, and Patricia Hastie

3 SUPERSTARS IN BERLIN

A Special HD Broadcast Starring Anna Netrebko, Erwin Schrott & Jonas Kaufman

Three of the biggest names in opera come together for a once in a lifetime performance. Opera superstar Anna Netrebko returns to Berlin’s stunning Waldbuhne, one of the world’s most impressive open stages. Against this amazing backdrop, she is joined by her husband, baritone Erwin Schrott and star tenor Jonas Kaufman in a program that includes famous duets from Bernstein’s West Side Story, Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, as well as popular Tango duets and arias from Mozart (Leporello’s aria from Don Giovanni) and excerpts from Gounod’s Faust. Accompanying the singers, Marco Armiliato conducts the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

About Anna Netrebko: Anna Netrebko is no longer just the darling of the opera world: she is enchanting audiences around the globe while continuing to cultivate the respect and admiration of opera’s most devoted and demanding fans. Her beautiful, dark, and distinctive voice, together with her elegant and alluring stage presence, makes it “all but impossible to look away when she is performing.” Ms. Netrebko has gone on to appear with nearly all of the world’s great opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera, London’s Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Vienna State Opera, the Paris Opera, the Zurich Opera, the Berlin State Opera, and Munich’s Bavarian State Opera.

About Jonas Kaufmann: At 42, Jonas Kaufmann, the German tenor is one of the busiest and most celebrated singers in opera. His career has developed with extraordinary speed. The swiftness of his rise to prominence speaks both to his great talent and bankability. Mr. Kaufmann has quickly become a key component of artistic plans for the Metropolitan Opera and other major companies. His recent solo recital at the Met is the latest example of his meteoric rise in the opera world.

About Erwin Schrott: Uruguayan bass-baritone Erwin Schrott has praise from both audiences and critics for his powerful and versatile singing as well as his captivating performances especially in roles by Mozart. He made his professional debut in Montevideo at the age of 22. His breakthrough came in 1998 when he won both the jury and audience prizes at the 1998 Operalia, a competition run by Plácido Domingo. He has gone on to play many roles in major opera houses in both Europe and the US.

The Dolly Wagglers present “The Mystery of Ice Mountain” Saturday January 21st at Mayo Street Arts.

It is about an adventure in a remote, icy landscape with some exotic creatures of the colder climes. Slapstick, life-sized puppets, and ventriloquism are just a few of the old-world tricks the Dolly Wagglers have up their sleeves. Audiences of all ages will enjoy the show.

This puppet show is part of The Children’s Puppet Workshop – a series of puppet-themed workshops and performances at Mayo Street Arts. Sponsored in 2012 by The Virginia Summers Hodgkins Foundation, Portland Community Policing, and Coffee By Design.

The Dolly Wagglers: Purveyors of Entertainment and Spectacle-

These folks have been creating, performing, and touring original puppet shows over the last ten years in the U.S. and at international venues. They recently participated in Banners & Cranks, a traveling cantastoria show, NYC’s Great Small Works festival, and recently at King Friday’s Dungeon, an adult Puppet Slam at Mayo Street Arts.

“We strive to bring a fresh crudeness and entertaining humility to the world of puppetry. We are constantly at work on cardboard operettas, crankyshows (low-tech scrolling pictures), and cantastorias (picture shows).” say Dolly Wagglers Adam Cook & Linsay McCaw.
Crank will discuss safe and proper soldering techniques, materials, and the countless applications where these microphones can be used. Participants will be guided through all the steps of construction and have their very own microphone to take home! This workshop is open to all levels of experience.
