November 15 – December 9

Each year KV Connect adopts a family through the Family Violence Project and buys gifts for them. This year we have adopted a disabled Grandmother and her 2 grandchildren – a 3 year old autistic boy and a 4 year old girl – who are struggling and trying to start over.

The wish list has been uploaded to the KV Connect website (kvconnect.org) [http://kvconnect.org] and we’d love to have your help with some of the items. Please consider buying an item or two or helping out with a monetary donation. If you can help in either way, please let us know.

Nikki will be shopping on Friday for many of the items. You can drop off gifts and checks at Hardy Girls (14 Common Street in downtown Waterville) between 8:30-5 M-F or send them to Nicole Desjardins c/o the Waterville Hampton Inn. Please email or call Nikki to notify her of what you will be purchasing so she can update the list.

Nikki Desjardins information: nicole.desjardins@hilton.com or 207-446-5792 cell.

Thank you all in advance for your assistance on this project! It’s a wonderful cause and KV Connect is happy to be able to help fellow community members who can use a boost of assistance during this time of year.

THANK YOU for your help and Happy Holidays!

Presented by the Farnsworth Art Museum

Over three consecutive Wednesdays, the Farnsworth will present a special series on the interrelationship between food production/culinary history and paintings that depict food. Drawing on readings in anthropology, archaeology, material culture, social history, cookery texts and art history, Cultures of Desire will highlight some of the more unusual ways humans find and produce sustenance, and how from earliest days to the present they have created artworks that celebrate the nourishment of body and spirit.

MIT graduate and physician Keith Collins, MD, and Farnsworth Director of Education and Harvard instructor Roger Dell will lead this interdisciplinary exploration of art and food, using images from medical texts to cook books, from prehistoric cave walls to the Food Channel. The series will be divided thematically as follows:

Lecture One: The Dawn of Food

The initial lecture will trace the history of food and cooking from the Stone Age through the collapse of the Roman Empire. We will examine the extraordinary impact of food technology (hunting, cooking, and agriculture) on human evolution, how it reshaped bodies and minds. These innovations will be depicted though images by early artists on cave walls in south central France, wine bowls in Greece, and mosaic tiles across the Roman Empire.

Lecture Two: Eat, Drink and Be Merry!

This lecture will focus on the physiological, psychological and sociological aspects of food and cooking. For example, how does food stimulate the reward centers of the brain? Why do people across time and cultures socialize around meals? Artworks such as sensuous Dutch still-life paintings will be read as visual poems to national pride and prosperity, filled with glorious depictions of Dutch cheese and butter, and also with international treasures such as French wine, Baltic grain for bread, Indian pepper, and Chinese porcelains.

Lecture Three: À Votre Santé: Food and Health

This lecture will begin with an examination of the connection between food, eating and our health. The diets of long-lived cultures around the world will be explored, along with the latest thinking on how to eat for both health and pleasure in the modern world. Another aspect of this lecture will be a survey of how modern and contemporary artists use food in painting, sculpture, photography and film. The lecture and the series will conclude with an exploration of how Maine is fast becoming a leader in one component of a healthier diet: fresh, local, organic foods.

Maine author Nancy Griffin will discuss her new book, Making Whoopies: The Official Whoopie Pie Book,at Lithgow Public Library on Monday, November 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s Reading Room. The program is free and open to the public.

Making Whoopies is a wide-ranging, lighthearted look at whoopie pies and the folks who love them. The book contains 16 recipes including healthy, gluten-free, and zucchini whoopie pies. A traditional whoopie pie consists of two soft dark chocolate cakes, generously filled with creamy white filling. Whoopie pies could be declared the official Maine dessert, and many believe the beloved confection originated in Maine, although Pennsylvania actually has an equally strong claim to that honor. The comfort-food treats are enjoying a renaissance as bakeries offer gourmet versions, and internet sales have flourished.

Griffin is a Thomaston resident who grew up in Boston and moved to Maine 40 years ago. She is a former newspaper and wire service reporter and editor who has been a freelance writer for more than 20 years. As a longtime lover of whoopie pies, Griffin says that writing — and especially researching — Making Whoopies: the Official Whoopie Pie Book, was a sweet pleasure. Her other recent book, published in 2009, is Maine 101: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Maine and Were Going to Ask Anyway.

Griffin’s website can be found at www.makingwhoopies.net.

Lithgow Library is located at 45 Winthrop Street in Augusta. For more information, call the library at 626-2415 or visit the library’s website at www.lithgow.lib.me.us.

About Slates Restaurant & Bakery

Slates Restaurant & Bakery are located in downtown Hallowell, Maine across from the Kennebec River. Down East magazine quotes, “Water Street, Hallowell’s main thoroughfare, is lined with antique shops and bookstores. For the last twenty-five years it has also been anchored by the pleasantly off-beat restaurant known as Slates.”

Slates success is due to the owner’s passion for excellent food that is consistent and creative as well as providing outstanding service. All of the restaurant’s breads, pastas, desserts and ice creams are homemade at Slates Bakery next door. The recently expanded bakery has been applauded by regulars and is now a place that customers can sit and enjoy a cup of coffee, baked goods, lunch and amazing take home dinners.

The restaurant is open Tuesday through Friday serving lunch and dinner, Saturday for brunch and dinner and Sundays for brunch. Brunch is served on both Saturday and Sunday mornings with roughly hundreds of options including the most amazing benedicts and Bloody Mary’s!

Slates purchases their produce from local organic farmers whenever possible and base their entrees on what is fresh and available for the time of year. The bar has an impressive selection of liquor, beer, wine and creative drink specials. Slates is a great place to eat out for any occasion; an appetizer in the bar with friends, dinner in the welcoming art filled dining room or a large gathering in our private function room. If you haven’t been to Slates Restaurant or Bakery please make the visit, you won’t regret it! We hope to see you soon.

Please call the restaurant directly at 622-9575 to purchase gift certificates.

Reviews

Paola Arreola:

“I was in Portland during restaurant week (Mar 2010) and had the chance to stop by El Rayo. Good concept, I liked the atmosphere and brightness of the restaurant. I had the tortilla soup, fish taco, and dessert as well as a beverage.

The pomegrante drink was refreshing and the rice krispy treat with the cajeta was delicious. Unfortunately I have not found a single “blended” tortilla soup that I like, this is just my personal preference but I prefer to keep the ingredients in the broth vs. blending all save for the chunks of cheese and avocado that are added before serving.

When my taco arrived, I had to ask for another plate as the filling for the fish taco was piled on top of two stacked corn tortillas. I made two tacos and I would have liked them better if they had not been so wet/soggy. As I looked around to other patrons I noticed a couple of women eating their tacos with a knife and fork – it reminded me of the Seinfeld episode about the candy bar. I realize El Rayo is doing its thing but I wasn’t sure if my taco meant to come with two tortillas or not and just wanted to note that in many taco joints open faced tacos are served with the tortillas spread out but overlapping each other and the filling is placed in the middle of the tortillas.

I do wish El Rayo lots of success. It would be great to visit Portland again and find El Rayo doing great business.

Roy Davis and the Dregs CD/DVD Release Party. Roy, Portland’s Prodigal son recently released his newest CD “We Are A Lightning Bolt” to rave reviews. Now, close on the heels of this success, Roy is releasing another CD and DVD devoted solely to live material.

Girls, Guns & Glory formed in Scituate, Massachusetts in the winter of 2005 when former band-mates and high school friends, Ward Hayden (lead vocals/acoustic guitar) and Bruce Beagley (bass), teamed up to record Ward’s original compositions. They entered Noise in the Attic Studio and began work on the GG&G debut CD “Fireworks and Alcohol.” The success of that release fueled the formation of a 5-piece lineup that began to work the New England club scene in earnest. Their sophomore release, “Pretty Little Wrecking Ball”, in February of 2007, proved to be the catalyst in a break-out year for the band as they collected 2 Boston Phoenix awards, numerous articles in the press, and lots of radio play – culminating in a Boston Music Award for “Outstanding Americana Act of the Year”. The band solidified it’s lineup as a strong 4-piece featuring John Graham on drums and Colt Thompson on guitar.

Anaïs Mitchell has lived the role of traveling minstrel already at only 25. From her Vermont roots in farming country to Europe and Africa, Mitchell has already got miles behind her. Originally she planned to be a writer because: “Not unlike artists, they’re always traveling, always writing, loving their loneliness, feeling that they have their finger on the pulse—worshiping the truth and trying to render it legible.”

Listening to Anais Mitchell perform her meticulously written songs, fervently singing them in a distinctive, almost childlike voice, you’d think it was her life mission to rouse the hearts and minds of her listeners with an acoustic guitar.

“In Mitchell’s universe, there is no light between the personal and the political, the venerable and the radical… she brilliantly intertwines the mundane and the profound, singing with the same intimacy about a carefree night on the town and wandering the warring towns of Israel. Her vivid snapshots of sweetly ordinary moments spin suddenly outward to bemoan the eternal woes of poverty and militarism.” – BOSTON GLOBE

“A songwriter of startling clarity and depth, equally skilled at turning a melody or lyrical phrase into what you didn’t know you needed until you heard it… fearlessly emotive…like Dylan, Cohen, and Welch, Mitchell weaves her stories into an effortlessly beautiful and cohesive tapestry with the skill of an artisan’s carpenter, showing no seams.” – ACOUSTIC GUITAR

Story and Photos by Ed DesJardins

There are inspiring stories around every corner if one cares to seek them out – I found one right down the road in my hometown of Readfield at a small little shop currently known as Marie’s Whole Foods.

Since its opening in 2008 Marie’s has enjoyed a growing loyal following. The original vision of Marie’s founder Kathy Booth was to provide local residents with a much needed resource for high quality whole foods and fantastic fresh baked goods. She found to her delight that local residents embraced this idea but soon encountered the dilemma of not being able to keep up with growing demand for longer store hours and special orders. Booth started looking for partners that could help her meet these demands and though many stated they would hate to see Marie’s close, none could offer the commitment necessary to honor the needs of this rapidly developing small business.

Booth’s longtime friend Sarah Emery would occasionally use the kitchen at Marie’s to prepare food for her small catering business. In addition to being an inventive chef, Sarah is a seasoned Organic farmer, a gifted baker, and possesses an infectious sort of energy and drive that inspired Booth to offer her the lead role at Marie’s which she recently accepted. In an interview at Marie’s Emery stated “I have always known that this sort of thing was my calling and this opportunity came along at the perfect time – I knew it was meant for me”.

Starting in early July of 2010 the name of the business will change to Sarah’s Choice and Emery will take things to the next level. Special orders are encouraged and will range from custom cakes baked by Emery herself to bulk orders of many of the offerings that grace her store. Delicious prepared foods will be available for people to take home and enjoy and fresh mixed greens and vegetables from Emery’s organic farm will be available in season. “I want to offer my customers something they simply won’t find elsewhere in this area” said Emery “Something different with a high nutritional value not often found in carry out prepared foods”. Patrons can expect to find a large variety of choices throughout the week such as home made soups, Spanikopita, spinach and sun dried tomato strata, inspired versions of pot pies, sandwiches, local cheeses and wines available.

Supporting local business is a tradition Emery will carry on at Sarah’s Choice.

In addition to the products from her own farm and kitchen, Emery has a beautiful selection of artisan breads from Ann Huntington, wonderful prints suitable for framing by photographer Alex Wall, hand made personal care products from Mountain Mama, and cards featuring the art of Helen Stevens and Susan Elliot. “These items are uniquely Maine and I’m proud to sell them here” said Emery.

All the components for success seem to be in place at Sarah’s Choice. Visitors cannot help but notice Emery’s seemingly boundless enthusiasm, talent, and the fact that she seems to glow at the helm of her new venture. Patrons will be glad to know that summer hours will be 7 A.M. to 5 P.M. 7 days a week. Sarah’s Choice is located at 1138 main Street Readfield (next to the post office) and the phone number is 207-685-9900.

Contemporary cuisine in a friendly, picturesque setting…

Since we opened the doors four years ago, the Olde Post Office Café on the shores of Lake Minnehonk in Mount Vernon Village, has come to mean many things to many people and that was part of our plan. We recently asked our customers to jot down a few words that expressed their thoughts about the café and what they had to say was both flattering and gratifying.

“The best food in Maine for the type of food you offer.”…“Warm, friendly, picturesque and charming.”…“Great food and great community.” …“Great music and entertainment for the whole family.”…“An uptown deli in a down-home town.”…“Don’t look for better coffee anywhere.”

From the very start it was our dream to create an atmosphere where customers know they can find the best in casual contemporary and classic cuisine in a warm, inviting setting; a place where the sense of community is as important as the food on the plates. We wanted the Café to be a place for a quick cup of fresh-ground coffee on the way to work or a meeting place where friends and family could gather to enjoy a casual meal, unhurried and apart from the cares of the day – a place to entertain company, celebrate family milestones, enjoy a night out or just a place to find joy in both good food and good conversation.

At the heart of our mission has been the desire and dedication to provide classic and contemporary casual dishes and baked goods using the freshest possible ingredients sourced locally and prepared with care and creativity by our professional staff. Our Manager and Master Baker Shari Hamilton is continually coming up with new pastries to line the baked goods cases while turning out the best home-made breads with the finest flours and ingredients to use in our creative sandwiches and paninis and for sale over the counter. And our chef, Robert Wallack, brings a globe-trotting fusion of tastes and cooking styles in his repertoire of soups, stews and savory lunch and dinner specials to tempt and delight regulars and first-time visitors, alike.

If you haven’t discovered us yet, stop in and see what the Café is all about. And if you’re one of our regulars, let me personally thank you for helping us make the Café a success. We look forward to serving you in the future. And be sure to visit this web site often to see our daily and weekly specials and to place your take-out orders for any of our wonderful menu items, specials or baked goods.
