The staff of the Gardiner Public Library announces that for the next four weeks the movie theme for the Movie Theater Thursdays will be “little known musicals”. This Thursday, March 22nd, beginning at 2:30PM, the library will be featuring the movie, The Unsinkable Molly Brown starring Debbie Reynolds.

My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown is a 1989 drama film directed by Jim Sheridan and starring Daniel Day-Lewis. It tells the true story of Christy Brown, anIrishman born with cerebral palsy, who could control only his left foot. Christy Brown grew up in a poor, working class family, and became a writer and artist. The film also stars Ray McAnally, Brenda Fricker, Fiona Shaw, Julie Hale, Alison Whelan, Kirsten Sheridan, Declan Croghan, Eanna MacLiam, Marie Conmee, and Cyril Cusack. It was adapted by Shane Connaughton and Jim Sheridan from the book of the same name by Christy Brown.[2

The Artist did better in weekend number two than its opening weekend. That tells me that word of mouth is kicking in and those of you who have seen and loved it (the vast majority) are telling those who haven’t yet made the journey. So The Artist IS going for at least one more week. Remember, I have been saying all along that I believe it will win the Best Picture Oscar.
Woody Guthrie was not only a prolific singer/songwriter with 3,000 works to his credit (only 10% have been published) but also a visual artist and writer. The exhibition, entitled “This Land is Your Land: Photographic Works Inspired by an American Legend”,will take place at the Harlow Gallery at 160 Water Street in Hallowell in November 2-24, 2012.
