Are you curious about IPads, touch technology and how it all works? Anne Davis, Director of Library Services, is pleased to announce that the Gardiner Library Association has donated an IPad 2 to the Children’s Room. Staff has loaded age appropriate games such as Scruffy Kitty, Angry Birds and Curious Zoo starring the beloved, Curious George. There are also interactive books such as Cozmo and Teddy’s Day that allow children to read/listen to a book and become excited readers!
Lisa Turner, author of The Eat Local Cookbook by Down East books, will close Lithgow Public Library’s series on sustainability on Thursday, May 31 at 6:30 p.m. The sustainability series, titled “It’s Not Easy Being Green,” included informational talks from solar energy and home efficiency experts, along with presentations about the proposed North Woods national park.
Preserve Maine Traditions will present a panel discussion on Wednesday, May 30 at 6:30 p.m. at Lithgow Public Library in Augusta. Preserve Maine Traditions is a citizens group committed to preserving Maine’s cultural heritage and land use traditions, working to ensure the continued respect between landowners and the public.
Lithgow Public Library will host two events on May 23 and 24. On Wednesday, May 23 at 6:30 p.m., Milton Huntington will talk about his new book, A Lifetime of Laughter as part of Lithgow Library’s “Maine Authors in May” series. Huntington returns readers to the good old days of yesteryear as he reminisces about Augusta in days gone by, close encounters with celebrities and politicians, hunting and fishing yarns, and assorted humorous tales.
Join us at the Gardiner Public Library’s Community Archives Room for a Tuesday evening Genealogy & Local History Meet-Up. Whether you are just getting started and unfamiliar with computers or you’re an old pro with your own laptop or tablet, we’ll help you jump right in. In addition to our fantastic collection of local research materials, we also have four laptops available for use and can provide one-on-one assistance for ancestry.com and web searching strategies — or bring your own laptop or tablet and use our free Wi-Fi with access to Ancestry.com Library Edition. The first meet-up will be May 15th from 5- 7 with more summer dates to follow.
Thanks to everyone who attended and/or donated works of art to our Creative Arts Auction, held on April 29 at Slates Restaurant in Hallowell. The auction was a resounding success,bringing in over $7,000 for the library’s capital campaign. Another example of the wonderful support the library receives from the community. Thank you!
On January 1st, we started a program called A Year of Reading. Anyone and everyone – of any age – with a valid Gardiner Public Library card is eligible to join. Each month we will have a different reading theme that will be sponsored by a local area business. Read a book or watch a movie pertaining to that theme and be entered for a prize drawing at the end of the month. Come in and join the fun!
Lithgow Public Library will host two events on May 9 and 10. On Wednesday, May 9 at 6:30 p.m., Earl Smith will do a reading from his new comic mystery, The Dam Committee as part of the library’s “Maine Authors in May” series. The former dean of Colby College writes affectionately about the foibles of life in the fictitious village of Belfry, a summer resort nestled between two lakes separated by a dam. Area residents may recognize an uncanny resemblance to Smith’s hometown of Belgrade Lakes.
The first in a four-part sustainability series in May hosted by Lithgow Public Library will be an informational program about the proposed Maine Woods National Park. On Thursday, May 3 at 6:30 p.m.,Tom and Lee Ann Szelog return to Lithgow Library with a multi-media presentation featuring the music of legendary folk singer Pete Seeger along with Tom Szelog’s stunning nature photographs. Since 2007, the Szelogs have put a face to the land and wildlife of the proposed 3.2 million-acre park in northern Maine through their “Maine Woods National Park Photo-Documentation Project.”
Beginning on May 3rd The Lithgow Public Library will host a three-part series on sustainability, “It’s Not Easy Being Green,” during the month of May. All programs will take place in the Reading Room, and are free and open to the public.

Author Jamie Ford’s appearance at Lithgow Public Library on Wednesday, April 18 at 6:30 p.m. is the culmination of a month-long series of events in Lithgow’s popular A Capital Read community reading program. This year marks the return of the much-anticipated event — sponsored by the Friends of Lithgow Public Library with support from Lucky Garden Restaurant — following budget cuts the past two years. The programs revolving around Ford’s best-selling novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, have included music, crafts, book groups and informative discussions.

Parenting, Learning, and Brain Research, Thursday, April 12, 7 p.m. Is there really such a thing as talent? How does sleep affect learning? Can you feed your child’s IQ? Is the “Mozart Effect” real?
