On January 1st, we started a program called A Year of Reading. Anyone and everyone – of any age – with a valid Gardiner Public Library card is eligible to join. Each month we will have a different reading theme that will be sponsored by a local area business. Read a book pertaining to that theme and be entered for a prize drawing at the end of the month. Come in and join the fun!
Ashley Bryan has been awarded the Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Award for lifetime achievement. The award recognizes an African American author, illustrator, or author/illustrator for a body of his or her published books for children and/or young adults who has made a significant and lasting literary contribution. Melissa Sweet writes and illustrates picture books in Rockport, Maine. She received the Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal, awarded annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished informational children’s book, for Balloons over Broadway.
Project partners include University of Maine, University of Southern Maine, Bangor Public Library, Portland Public Library, Maine State Library, Bates College, Bowdoin College and Colby College.
On Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 2:00pm, the Gardiner Public Library will conduct a workshop on how to use the most popular online genealogy resource: Ancestry.com to discover your family history.
With so many people receiving eReaders like the Nook or Kindle for the holidays, Lithgow Public Library will hold an “eBook 101” class on Wednesday, January 25 at 1 p.m. in the library’s Reading Room. Staff members will answer basic questions about the Nook, Kindle and other eReaders, and help participants navigate the world of eBooks. Instruction will also be provided on how to check out books from the statewide downloadable library.
As 2011 came to a close several Maine libraries were the fortunate recipients of good news in the form of grants. The list includes only those libraries that reported this information to the Maine State Library.
An Introduction to Swing Dance, with Julie Olson – 7pm, Thursday, January 26th Back by popular demand, Julie Olson will present a class on the basics of Swing dance. A great time was had by all at our last dance lesson, so come join us, even if you don’t have a partner. As always, refreshments. Sponsored by the Friends of Hubbard Free Library.
The staff of the Gardiner Public Library is pleased to announce the resumption of our popular movies at the library program. The event will now be held on Thursday afternoons and the program has been rechristened Movie Theater Thursdays. Movies begin at 2:30PM in our beautiful Hazzard Reading Room.
The Gardiner Public Library now has a bookstore on Amazon.com! Please visit this virtual store at Gardiner Public Library books. Most items in the store are gently used titles donated to the library. All proceeds from the sale of these books will be used in the renovation of the library’s Community Archives Room – a collection of unique local history, genealogical materials, rare maps and manuscripts.
Lithgow Public Library will host free informational programs about hospice on the second Tuesday of each month beginning January 10. Those interested can drop by the Reading Room between 2 and 4 p.m. Kelly Herlihy, volunteer coordinator at Beacon Hospice in Augusta, will give an overview of what hospice is and who will benefit from its services.
January’s theme is Pet Month and our monthly drawing is sponsored by At Home Veterinary Care located at 6 Lewiston Rd, West Gardiner. Participants just need to read a book about animals and register at the library’s adult circulation desk. Staff will gladly help you make your title selection if needed.
We are holding a holiday party at the Gardiner Public Library on December 20th from 5:30PM-6:30PM. There will be stories, crafts (created by our talented Missy Abbott) and refreshments. The staff encourages all children (and any adults that are young at heart) to dress in their favorite holiday outfits.
