The Ivy Leaf is a young traditional Irish quartet that came together through the Boston session scene. Featuring fiddles, flute & whistle, concertina, vocals and bouzouki and guitar accompaniment, the group’s influences are a blend of the old and new, taking on centuries old dance music and giving it a modern vigor. Among their influences are many of the local musicians who define the sound of Irish music in Boston and Providence. Enriching that tradition is an intense curiosity for old, isolated, or obscure forms of music, arming the group with an array of tunes from jigs to polkas to hornpipes, along with songs of both Irish and American origin.

Béla Fleck and the Marcus Roberts Trio
May 28 (Monday):
So every once in awhile I feel like we get a show that everyone deserves but we are lucky enough to snag. This is one of those shows. Superstar Banjo player Béla Fleck has been coming to SMAC in some form or another since we opened. Be it with the Flecktones or with a project that is near and dear to his heart. Well this is one of those projects. THE MARCUS ROBERTS TRIO, led by Roberts on piano, Jason Marsalis on drums and Rodney Jordan on bass, are keen torch-holders of the classic jazz tradition. The mix of these four,— Roberts, Fleck, Jordan, Marsalis—create a new way forward in jazz, deeply rooted in the form, while pulling from the extensive backgrounds and music journeys of all the members—creating stellar performances that are exuberant, fresh, soaring, bold, and, of course, eclectic.
Jake Armerding and Annalivia both grew out of the potent Boston acoustic music scene, and Flynn Cohen of Annalivia and Armerding have known each other for years and have played a number of shows together. It was a natural pairing for these two acts to share the stage, and relevant to this year’s endeavors as Jake is producing Annalivia’s new album, set to be released in early summer.
Flogging Molly has never conformed to industry tastes; they’ve always been the outcasts who put their fans before commercial success, and they’ve always put their music before marketability. The rewards of such independence and integrity are undeniable on Speed of Darkness. You feel it from the first note to the last, the pathos and the passion, the sweeping and rollicking electricity of inspiration.
