Down home country humor, true emotion and unforgettable hits of Country Music Mega Star Patsy Cline converge in this inspirational show told through the letters of her friend Louise Segar, portrayed by Emmy Award winning actress Sally Struthers in the star performance that started her love affair with the Ogunquit Playhouse 10 years ago! This funny and touching tribute celebrates the career and life of the singer of who died tragically in a plane crash in 1963.Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams andWalking After Midnight are just a few of the 27 featured songs!

About the Show:

Always…Patsy Cline is based on the true story of Patsy Cline’s friendship with Houston housewife Louise Seger.

Upon hearing Patsy Cline on the “Arthur Godfrey Show” for the first time in 1957, Louise Seger became an immediate and avid fan of Cline’s. She constantly hounded the local disc jockey to play Cline’s records on the radio.
In 1961 when Cline went to Houston for a show, Seger and her buddies arrived about an hour-and-a-half early and, by coincidence, met Cline who was traveling alone. The two women struck up a friendship that was to culminate in Cline spending the night at Seger’s house–a friendship that lasted until Cline’s untimely death in a plane crash in 1963.

The relationship, which began as fan worship evolved into one of mutual respect. It is the kind of relationship that many fans would like to have with their heroes.

Over a pot of strong coffee, the two women chatted about their common concerns. When Cline finally left for Dallas, her next job, the two women had exchanged addresses and telephone numbers. Seger never expected to hear from Cline again, but soon after she left, Seger received the first of many letters and phone calls from Cline. The pen-pal relationship provides much of the plot of the show.

The play focuses on the fateful evening at Houston’s Esquire Ballroom when Seger hears of Cline’s death in a plane crash. Seger supplies a narrative while Cline floats in and out of the set singing tunes that made her famous–Anytime, Walkin’ After Midnight, She’s Got You, Sweet Dreams, andCrazy–to name a few.

The show combines humor, sadness and reality. It offers fans who remember Cline while she was alive a chance to look back, while giving new fans an idea of what seeing her was like and what she meant to her original fans.

The Ivy Leaf is a young traditional Irish quartet that came together through the Boston session scene. Featuring fiddles, flute & whistle, concertina, vocals and bouzouki and guitar accompaniment, the group’s influences are a blend of the old and new, taking on centuries old dance music and giving it a modern vigor. Among their influences are many of the local musicians who define the sound of Irish music in Boston and Providence. Enriching that tradition is an intense curiosity for old, isolated, or obscure forms of music, arming the group with an array of tunes from jigs to polkas to hornpipes, along with songs of both Irish and American origin.

It was Lindsay Straw (bouzouki/guitar/vocals) who first reached out to Caroline O’Shea (flute/whistles/vocals) and Daniel Accardi (fiddle/concertina) to explore the older traditions of Irish music. After the addition of friend and fellow musician Armand Aromin (fiddle/whistle) in 2010, The Ivy Leaf was born. The group released their debut album “The Ivy Leaf: Traditional Irish Music” in March 2012, available on CDBaby and iTunes starting March 29, 2012.

Uilleann piper Joey Abarta will open for the band. Joey is an astounding young piper, with many years of touring and an All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil championship under his belt. A recent addition to the Northeast, Joey hails from Los Angeles, CA and is now based in Boston.

Join The Ivy Leaf in celebrating the release of their first album and for an evening of traditional Irish music and songs at Blue on May 30 at 8:00 PM.
FRANCINE REED BIOGRAPHY

The blues can be defined in a limitless number of ways, but it will forever be the soul’s measurement of self-expression and self-healing. Where mere words cannot articulate, and movement is incomplete, music bridges the chasm. Francine Reed’s new album, SHADES OF BLUE, is the language of human spirit distilled through a voice of radiance. Known to most of the wold as Lyle Lovett’s duet and back-up vocalist, this Chicago-born songstress has been singing professionally since she was a child in her family’s gospel group. “ I always say I was born singing,” recalls Francine. “When the doctor slapped me on the ass, I went (singing) ‘Look at me!” Obligations resulting from a broken marriage prevented Ms. Reed from pursuing her dream full-time until her children were grown up and self-sufficient.

During those years, however, Francine performed in local jazz clubs and at various functions, eventually rising to prominence in her adopted hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. As a support act, Ms. Reed appeared on the bill with luminaries such as Miles Davis, Smokey Robinson, Etta James, and The Crusaders. In 1985, she met the then unknown singer Lyle Lovett and they formed a strong alliance that continues to this day. “Lyle has always intrigued me, and has been my greatest influence in the last fifteen years of my life. Just seeing the amount of importance he puts into every performance and into every recording session has had a tremendous effect on me. Being around musicians of his caliber has brought me to a higher level.”

Francine provides Lyle Lovett and his Large Band with an indelible stage presence and harmonic texture that has fans and critics worldwide. Reminiscing on their initial encounter at a recording session, “I couldn’t believe the voice I heard in the headphones belonged to THAT guy, I could’ve sworn that wasn’t him singing.” Performing with Lovett’s ensemble for over a decade, Ms. Reed has appeared on several of the artist’s platinum discs, and sang alongside Mr. Lovett on recent broadcasts of “Late Night with David Letterman”, “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno, and “Regis a d Kathy Lee.” In addition to her touring schedule with Lovett, Ms. Reed has appeared on recordings by Delbert McClinton and Roy orbison, among others. Her distinctive vocals can also be herd on several television commercials including Senekot Laxative (“I Feel Good”) and in a scene from the 1993 hit film, THE FIRM, via Tom Cruise’s character’s disc player. “I can still remember my first performance when I was a three year old in my aunt’s church. Her name was Helen Francis, for whom I’m named, and I was so small they had to put me on the piano. I used to listen to rehearsals with her gospel choir and I’d sing “I Wanna See Jesus” in front of the congregation.

An audience to me could be just one or two people. My mom would have guest over and point to me and say ‘sing a song.’ And I would just go on and sing, and I’d even make up my own songs. It’s a natural God-given talent.” Francine Reed’s solo career began in the mid –1990s after she relocated to Georgia. Francine released her debut, I WANT YOU TO LOVE ME, in 1985, which included a cameo by Mr. Lovett. A year later, she followed up with CAN’T MAKE IT ON MY OWN, which featured studio legends Al Kooper (organ) and Bob Babbait (bass), along with McClinton. Both records were highly acclaimed with the later being the catalyst for a prestigious W.C. Handy Artist of the Year and Song of the Year nominations. Bonnie Raitt praised Francine Reed during a concert at Chastain Park when she walked on stage with Ms. Reed’s album and proclaimed. “You folks have a national treasure here in Atlanta.” Produced by Bryan Cole and Edd Miller for CMO Productions in Atlanta. SHADES OF BLUE is a stellar collection of ten compositions that allow Francine Reed to expand on the legacy in which she carved out for herself. Featuring up-tempo dance selections, heartfelt ballads, and lush orchestrations, SHADES OF BLUE is essential listening. “My brother Tony was the one who introduced me to jazz. Like most of my family I was into R& B, Motown, Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, and Nancy Wilson.

We all used to listen to the radio and were very influenced by everyone we heard. And we thought we could do what everyone else was doing.” “Got A Right To Sing The Blues” is one of the many special moments on her latest release. The duel vocals of Francine and her sister Margo bespeak a deep passion for the blues. “I always loved the way Margo did this tune,” notes Francine, “and anything we sing together is going to be enjoyable.” Choosing the songs for SHADES OF BLUE was no easy task for a singer that is well versed in a number of genres. “Producer Bryan (Cole), and Edd (Miller) did everything for me on this album except the singing! We received tunes from advertisements placed in magazines for me, and they would weed through all the tapes and select what was right. Their expertise made it all happen.” However, the selections do reveal a very personal aspect of the artists’ life. “The Man That Got Away,” “Wrong Man For The Job,” “I Have A Right To Know,” and I’m A Handful” all ring true. “”Oh yes, it’s a man thing…my breakup with a gentleman had a lot to do with these songs. It comes around every now and then.”

“When we’re in the studio, I always try to go with first takes. Since I’m constantly working I usually don’t have the luxury of setting aside time specifically to record.” On the subject of capturing the energy of a live performance in a recording booth, and keeping the concert flame burning, Ms. Reed notes “it’s a mindset for me that I’m still trying to master. If it’s a really good song, then it just comes out of me. At a gig, I try to phrase like a record which is what the audience comes to hear. I learned that from being on the road with Lyle. Other times I have a tendency to be more improvisational and feed of the musicians and the crowd. Then I can kick it up a notch. But how that comes about, I really don’t know. I just open my mouth and sing from the heart. I’m really blessed.” CONTACT: Al Risi / PLATINUM ENTERTAINMENT 770-664-9262 ext 5762 arisi@pt-ent.com CMO Productions / Management Bryan Cole and Edd Miller 404-355-0909 www.cmopro.com

Grammy Award-winning harmonica master James “Mr. Superharp” Cotton and his band will perform at the Chocolate Church Arts Center in Bath on Saturday, June 2, 2012. Cotton’s latest CD, the Grammy-nominated GIANT, is his long-awaited return to Alligator Records. Cotton, who in 2012 is celebrating his 68th year as a professional musician (starting at the age of nine), has recorded almost 30 solo albums, including two highly-regarded releases for Alligator in the 1980s and the famed Harp Attack! with Junior Wells, Carey Bell and Billy Branch in 1990. In 2011, Cotton won three Living Blues awards: Male Blues Artist Of The Year, Most Outstanding Musician–Harmonica and Best Blues Album for GIANT.

Concert information is as follows:

Over the course of his storied career, Cotton has seemingly done it all. As a small boy he learned harmonica directly from Sonny Boy Williamson. He toured with Howlin’ Wolf, recorded for Sun Records, and spent twelve years with Muddy Waters before stepping out on his own. Leading his own band, he rose to the very top of blues and rock scenes, touring the world non-stop and earning his reputation as one of the most powerful live blues performers in the world.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Giant is a ferocious blast of brash boogie blues. Produced by Cotton, Jacklyn Hairston and Derek O’Brien and recorded by Stuart Sullivan at Wire Recording in Austin, Texas, Giant features twelve tracks, including four new Cotton originals and co-writes, alongside songs made famous by Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Ivory Joe Hunter and others. Throughout his career, Cotton has always led great bands, and the players on Giant are no exception. With guitarists/vocalists Slam Allen and Tom Holland, bassist Noel Neal and drummer Kenny Neal, Jr., Giant is not just a reminder of Cotton’s legendary status, it is a vibrant, hard-hitting album made by one of the true blues masters.

Giant reaffirms James Cotton’s high-compression blues harmonica playing is a true force of nature. As The San Francisco Examiner says, “James Cotton is an inimitable blues legend. His wailing harmonica blows them away. His improvisations on the blues are full of fun and good humor. The blues don’t get much better.”

In June 2010, Cotton was honored at New York’s Lincoln Center, where his friends Hubert Sumlin, Pinetop Perkins, Taj Mahal, Shemekia Copeland and others paid tribute in an all-star concert. There James Cotton played to yet another sold-out venue, with fans cheering the man known worldwide as “Mr. Superharp,” an undisputed giant of the blues.

Just what we need to bring in the summer offcially…a hot band from Louisisanna!! We love Terrance…For more than 2 decades Grammy award winning artist Terrance Simien, 8th generation Louisiana Creole has been shattering the myths about what his indigenous Creole Zydeco music is and is not. Leading his Zydeco Experience Band, Simien has become one of the most respected and internationally recognized touring and recording artists in roots music today. He has performed over 5000 concerts, toured millions of miles to over 40 countries and reached at least a million people during his eventful 25 year career. He also has become the Cultural Ambassador of Louisiana, bringing awareness to the unique culture and music of his beloved state. He has a smille to fill up a room, and we hope the room will be full with dancing and toe tapping. There will be dinner seating as well as a dance floor….something for everyone!

When you hear a name like Jess Dee it conjures up a slick guy with a big vinyl coolection and a spoft spot for soul music. Well that is just what you are gonna get! Jesse Dee’s influences read like a Who’s Who of classic soul music. Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Etta James, Al Green and many others. But Jesse Dee is not just a student of the classics. He also loves the new wave of rootsy artists -James Hunter, Amos Lee and John Legend, among them. Jesse adds stunning vocal expressiveness and a unique ability to inject and dissect emotions along with his Boston Based band. He delivers it all with a warmth that comes from analog recording and from cutting a lot of his songs live in the studio. Jesse’s love of soul is honest to the core. The mix of these four,— Roberts, Fleck, Jordan, Marsalis—create a new way forward in jazz, deeply rooted in the form, while pulling from the extensive backgrounds and music journeys of all the members—creating stellar performances that are exuberant, fresh, soaring, bold, and, of course, eclectic. The Marcus Roberts Trio is known for its virtuosic style – a style that is strongly rhythmic, melodic, and filled with dynamic contrast. This trio has an entirely new approach to jazz trio performance. The group was founded in 1995, and 15 years later, they are known around the world for their signature trio style. Roberts’ vision of the jazz trio grew rapidly following the selection of drummer Jason Marsalis for the drum chair in 1994 (when Jason was just 17). Bassist Rodney Jordan is the most recent addition to the trio and his profound musical intelligence has already left its mark on the trio’s sound. So this is a show not be missed…whether you are a jazz fan or a Flecktone fan…..there is so much music here to enjoy for ANY music fan. C’mon out and see this special show.
Jake Armerding and Annalivia both grew out of the potent Boston acoustic music scene, and Flynn Cohen of Annalivia and Armerding have known each other for years and have played a number of shows together. It was a natural pairing for these two acts to share the stage, and relevant to this year’s endeavors as Jake is producing Annalivia’s new album, set to be released in early summer.

On May 25 audiences can expect original songs rooted in bluegrass, Old Time and Celtic traditions as well as some energetic instrumentals, and some cross-pollination among these old friends for sure.

Jake Armerding grew up playing classical violin and listening to 80s pop radio. He is the author of five albums of original music, along with a short-form recording as a member of his alter-ego instrumental ensemble The Fretful Porcupine. After joining a farm CSA in 2009, he adopted the idea for his own projects, and launched Community Supported Art in late 2011. Over the course of 1500 performances since turning professional at the age of 12, he has shared the stage with Bela Fleck, Nickel Creek, Josh Ritter, David Wilcox, and Toad the Wet Sprocket.
At the cutting edge of acoustic music, Annalivia is unique in that its members all have strong backgrounds in both traditional American and Celtic styles, and they contribute their own original material as well– instrumentals played on twin fiddles, guitar and mandolin, and songs written by lead singer Liz Simmons and guitarist Flynn Cohen. The members of Annalivia are virtuosic on their instruments and have long histories in traditional music, ranging from bluegrass to Irish, Scottish, English, Norwegian and Old Time. They are all seasoned musicians and have toured with many of the greats of the Celtic and Americana musical world, including Cathie Ryan, John Whelan, Aoife Clancy, Hanneke Cassel, Ruth Moody, and Adrienne Young.
Flogging Molly has never conformed to industry tastes; they’ve always been the outcasts who put their fans before commercial success, and they’ve always put their music before marketability. The rewards of such independence and integrity are undeniable on Speed of Darkness. You feel it from the first note to the last, the pathos and the passion, the sweeping and rollicking electricity of inspiration.

Founded in Los Angeles in 1997, Flogging Molly has always defied categorization. The infectious originality of their songs is a badge of honor and key to the band’s creativity, their urgency. They infuse punk rock with Celtic instruments—violin, mandolin and the accordion—and they merge blues progressions with grinding guitars and traditional Irish music, the music of King’s youth. “We’re not a traditional band,” explains Dublin-born King. “We are influenced by traditional music and inspired by it, but without question we put our own twist on it.” Theirs is music of exile and rebellion, of struggle and history and protest. It’s music of a country torn down the middle; a deeply beautiful and wounded country that knows no quit, and Flogging Molly pays homage to that resolve in every note. Whether it’s a driving anthem like “Black Friday Rule” or the upbeat duet with Lucinda Williams, “Factory Girls”, the band’s only criteria for its music is simple and bone-deep: that it matter.

Like the Violent Femmes before them, Santa Cruz’s the Devil Makes Three infuse their country-bluegrass swing with a raucous punk spirit. A popular group on the festival circuit, the trio spins its odes to Tennessee whiskey and brawling with acoustic guitar, banjo, and stand-up bass — an economical set-up that makes for some surprisingly danceable music. Lead singer Pete Bernhard’s voice is a little rough around the edges, but the group’s harmonies go down smooth. Too restless to play the typical bluegrass venues and too musically sophisticated for your average bar band, Devil Makes Three are a rare breed: wild traditionalists.- Flavorpill

It’s probably safe to say that you’ve never heard anything like Brothers Of Brazil before. For the past three years the brotherly duo of Supla and Joäo have been making some of the most original songs around by combining elements of traditional Brazilian music such as Bossa nova and samba with rock and funk to create a unique sound that’s won over countless fans in the band’s home base of South America—and now they’re finally ready to expand worldwide with the release of their self-titled album.

The duo was started when the brothers got a job hosting their own national variety show in Brazil called Brothers on Rede TV. It was then they realized that when they collaborated the results were beyond what they had ever imagined.

After the TV show ran its course the duo decided to pursue their newly found realization and start Brothers Of Brazil. Their debut album was produced by Mario Caldato, Jr. (Beastie Boys, Tone Loc). It may be the first that those of us outside South America have heard from the band, but judging by the reaction Brothers Of Brazil have gotten all over the world as a result of their raucous live shows it certainly won’t be the last.

From the instantly catchy samba sound of “Samba Around The Clock” to the rockabilly vibe of “Paparazzi” Brothers Of Brazil is an album that takes the band’s diverse group of influences and juxtaposes them into a very listenable brand of music that has as much emphasis on storytelling as it does songwriting. “We’re both into rock and Brazilian music so Brothers Of Brazil is very about that mix,” explains Joäo. The act has never relied on gimmicks: “The most important thing to us is to have a good song because if a song sucks it doesn’t matter how many styles you’re mixing together,” Supla clarifies.

The Brothers have already played huge festivals such as Planeta Terra and the SWU Music + Arts Festival as well as Rock In Rio in Portugal and now couldn’t be more excited about finally having a worldwide release for Brothers Of Brazil.

“I think we bring something different by having two brothers singing with great harmonies, crazy rockin jazz drumming, nylon string acoustic guitar playing with the bass notes played on his thumb and no bass guitar” Supla explains when asked what he thinks makes BOB stand out from other two-piece acts.

Supla continues, clarifying that while the band tackle every style from funk to rockabilly, Joäo’s traditional picking style and Supla’s distinctive drumming always ties these songs together. Ultimately no matter what language you speak or what type of genres you personally prefer, Brothers Of Brazil is a unique listening experience that will remind you that great songwriting is truly universal.

Additionally, Ansari is developing three films for Judd Apatow and Universal with Director Jason Woliner. The collaboration with Apatow began on Universal’s Funny People, where Ansari created the popular character of ‘Raaaaaaaandy,’ who went on to become a viral hit on FunnyOrDie.com. Ansari also appears in Get Him to the Greek alongside Russell Brand, Jonah Hill and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, as a co-worker of Hill’s character. He has had roles in the hit comedies I Love You, Man and Observe and Report.

In 2010, Ansari released an hour long standup special on Comedy Central titled, “Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening.” The special and subsequent DVD/CD were both extremely successful and the album continues to be a mainstay on iTunes’ comedy best-seller list. Many of their sketches have become internet sensations and have popularized the trio with young people all across the US. Ansari also had a very memorable guest starring role on HBO’s “Flight of the Conchords,” in which he portrayed a racist fruit vendor and was seen in a multi-episode arc on “Scrubs.”

As the death metal genre continues to explode, Knoxville’s Whitechapel stand bloody head and bruised shoulders above the pack. With a ruthlessly brutal aural assault built upon merciless blastbeats and spine-destroying breakdowns, their three guitarists deliver immense riffs and monstrous leads while vocalist Phil Bozeman vomits out lyrics that avoid clichés and give fans something to think about as they scream them back. Basically stated, this is as exhilarating as modern metal gets.

Formed in 2006, it did not take local metal fans long to realize that they had something very special going on in their midst. “We went from fifty of our friends coming to our shows to two hundred people coming out inside of six months,” guitarist Alex Wade states. “We’ve always held ourselves to a certain level of professionalism, we worked our asses off, and I think we definitely offered something that a lot of bands in the scene did not.”

Primed to take A New Era Of Corruption to hungry audiences around the globe, Whitechapel are continually proving themselves an indomitable force, and their fan base is primed to grow and grow as more people are exposed to their unique brand of sonic violence. Prepare to be corrupted.

Hailing from Dayton, Ohio, Miss May I claims a sound that is mature far beyond their years. With no members over the age of 19, they have been breaking out of the Dayton music scene with a sound that is unbelievably fast paced, heavy, and crushing, yet tastefully melodic and catchy. Currently writing for a full length debut with Rise Records, the band is gearing up for a 2009 release thats looking to propel them to the forefront of their genre.

An uninhibited eight-stringed dual barrage of frenetic riffs and dynamic chord progression is exactly what the crushing new AFTER THE BURIAL delivers with pinpoint precision. The highly acclaimed new album, In Dreams, is quickly going to raise the bar for all others within the metal genre as this group effectively unleashes a frenzy of jaw-dropping dual guitar dynamics that is backed by a captivating energy and groove resulting in an overall unrelenting output of punishment. This Minnesota quintet is hell-bent on forging their own unique path within the extreme metal genre and In Dreams proves that they are well on their way to that very goal. In Dreams is going to redefine the genre and position AFTER THE BURIAL as the forerunners of the new extreme progressive movement.

What started as a side-project of former Before Their Eyes (Rise Records) guitarist/vocalist, Landon Tewers, quickly became his main focus.

After parting ways with BTE, a solid line-up for the band was formed and work on their debut EP was underway. “Wife Beater” (InVogue Records) was both heavy as well as haunting, where lyrically Tewers gives you a look inside the lives of people he has come into contact with over the years..

Since 2005, Maine’s Last Chance to Reason has been an ever-evolving musical force with one goal: to make challenging progressive music that moves people. After 2 releases and countless diy tours, Last Chance to Reason has completed their most ambitious work to date, their Prosthetic Records debut “Level 2.” Teaming up with producer Jamie King (Between the Buried and Me, The Human Abstract), the band set out to create a modern take on the classic progressive concept album. Drawing influence from 70′s prog of King Crimson and Yes, composers Steve Reich and Schoenberg as well as prog-metal masters Opeth, Dream Theater and Cynic, LCTR’s “Level 2″ takes the band in awe-inspiring new directions. Set in a Tron-like virtual world, the album’s concept revolves around the relationship between man and technology, our move to from physical reality to virtual spaces and what these changes mean to our lives and our art. The lyrics are expressed from the point of view of an artificial intelligence facing the violent reality of a videogame world. Not content to simply release the piece as a musical endeavor, LCTR has teamed up with acclaimed indie developer Tom Vine and pixel artist Francis Coulombe to create a fully interactive version of the album in which the story unfolds through LCTR’s thematic riffs, stirring vocal hooks and progressive virtuosity while the player blasts his way through viscous gameplay inspired by classics such as R-Type, Contra, and Super Metroid.

At only 17 years of age Kathleen already has international experience having performed in Ireland, Scotland and the USA as well as various parts of Canada. Among her many accomplishments a couple of highlights are competing at the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann in Co. Offaly 2008 and again in Co. Cavan, Ireland in 2010 and the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Championships in Ottawa in both 2009 and 2010. It was also a distinct honour to appear in two concerts with Ashley MacIsaac in January 2010. Kathleen showcased at “Contact East” in Antigonish in September 2010. She released her second CD “Ceol Binn” (Irish for “Sweet Music”) in July 2010. This CD was nominated for an ECMA award as Roots/Traditional Solo Recording of the Year. Kathleen also received two Music New Brunswick nominations for this CD; Roots Traditional Recording of the Year and Instrumental Recording of the Year. She was thrilled to have several showcases at the ECMAs as well as being selected to perform in the Music Awards Gala. Kathleen was thrilled to perform at Prince Edward Island’s Festival of Small Halls in June 2011. She also played various venues on the famed George St. in St. John’s, Newfoundland, then headed to Ireland to perform in concert at the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann in Cavan in August 2011. When she returned from Ireland Kathleen headed stateside to perform in Massachusetts and Maine.

Kathleen was featured in Irish Music Magazine’s February 2012 issue. “This girl has talent, plenty of it, and her name deserves to be well known far beyond her New Brunswick home. With a full deep tone, her fiddle sounds mature and authoritative. She puts her own stamp on the music.” Alex Monaghan, Irish Music Magazine

Although she identifies as an Irish/ Celtic fiddler, Kathleen also enjoys the Old Time, Appalachian, Cajun and French Canadian styles and as a member of the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra can also toss some pretty cool classical pieces into the mix. She was recently awarded the Gold Medal by the Royal Conservatory of Music for highest ranking in the in the Atlantic region for music theory and practical performance in classical violin.

Besides her fiddle Kathleen plays piano, mandolin, banjo, tin whistle and has begun to incorporate vocals into the act. She is also an award winning Irish dancer and dabbles in Cape Breton step dancing. Kathleen is accompanied by pianist Carolyn Holyoke.

The Casco Bay Tummlers, from Portland, Maine, have been performing klezmer music since 1988. They have released three recordings and were also featured performers on the LL Bean Holiday CD. In 1999 they created and performed the music for the world premiere of “Manifest” at Portland Stage Company.

The Tummlers have a unique sound and a stage performance that features all members of the band. Steve Gruverman brings an extensive background in ethnic dance music to his soulful clarinet playing. Carl Dimow has developed a unique klezmer flute style, making the instrument an equal solo voice in the music. Julie Goell has a rich background in theater and jazz that comes out both in her bass playing and in her vocal features. Nancy Hoffman brings a playfulness which audiences love to both her accordion playing and her singing. Hayes Porterfield keeps the traditional role as drummer happening with elements of jazz and improvisation.

The band’s repertoire is versatile, ranging from original music to traditional dances and Yiddish theater and ghetto songs – all with original arrangements. In addition to playing for concerts the Tummlers also love to play for weddings, bar and batmitzvahs, school residencies and other celebrations. Nancy is a wonderful dance teacher who is great at getting everyone up and having a good time. The Tummlers also do frequent school residencies; performing music, teaching dances and songs, and talking about the music, the Yiddish language, immigration and the Holocaust.

In March of 2000 the Tummlers were in Germany where they performed to sold-out houses at the Hackesches Hof Theater in Berlin and at the ninth annual Festival of Jewish Culture in Chemnitz. In May and June of 2000 they traveled to Lithuania as the first klezmer band to perform at the Skamba, Skamba Kankliai folk festival in Vilnius. They toured Lithuania performing in Pakroijis, Linkuva, Kaunas and Druskininkai. In October of 2004, they completed a tour of Slovenia and Northern Italy. www.cascobaytummlers.com

Friday, May 18, 7:30 pm

Maine’s premier Celtic folk duo, Castlebay, presents a concert of Celtic and New England traditional music. Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee are Castlebay. Their concerts feature poignant ballads sung in Lane’s ethereal soprano and Gosbee’s rich baritone interspersed with joyous dance tunes played on Celtic harp, guitar, fiddle and tin whistle. Castlebay treats the audience to a musical journey through time and across the Atlantic. The show is sponsored by Kennebec Technologies and At Home Veterinary Care. Johnson Hall’s corporate sponsor is The Bank of Maine.

Castlebay has been musically weaving together the heritage of New England and the Celtic lands since 1987. Members Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee have loved and researched traditional music for most of their lives and blend history, legend and experience into their personable performance style. ”What’s Castlebay all about? Seafaring, the darkness and lightness of the coast of Maine, the rhythm of the tides”, says Peter Spectre, marine author. Both Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee are fine, expressive vocalists as well as talented instrumentalists, delivering songs with emotion, exuberance and both traditional and contemporary musical sensibilities.

“Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee shared more than their talent with our audience. They shared as well their keen sense for Maine humor and their love for the music they perform.” -The uNi Coffeehouse, Springfield, MA

Among their two dozen recording releases, Lane and Gosbee have written, recorded and produced two albums of completely original music- Song of the Sea and The Ballad of Cappy John.

I got a CD from this band in the mail and I must say that I was at first skeptical as they are a self-described “Electro Soul/Rock trio from Portland, ME”

Not really my cup of tea. But as with anything I get from artists, I sat down to give it a spin. The CD was not playable so I was tempted just to let it go and forget I ever heard about these guys. After all, a non-working CD is a great excuse. Couldn’t do that though so I went to their Facebook page, web page and looked them up.

More from their website……

The Other Bones is a rough-and-tumble gang of three residents of Portland, Maine who got together in 2011 to create a rock band. Whether or not they have succeeded remains to be seen, but their cavalier use of electronic, soul, hip-hop, and rock elements suggests that if they fail, it will not be from lack of influences (which include but are not limited to Ella Fitzgerald, J. Dilla, and Supergrass).

The Bones are: Andrew Mead, who plays the guitar and the iPad while crafting and executing loops on the MPC; Loretta Allen, who sings in a soulful manner while occasionally playing the synthesizer, and Eric Bruce, who plays the guitar while being a boss.

Friday, May 11 at 7:30 PM

He has brought his high energy antics to some of the finest venues in the U.S. and beyond including The Kennedy Center, The WhiteHouse, The Keller Theater in Germany, and the FestaAmericana in Italy. He calls Maine home and for many years owned and ran the delightful Oddfellow Theater in Buckfield, ME where he nurtured many of the state’s most creative talents (including two of our favorites – Audiobody’s Tardy Brothers). On this night Mike Miclon will bring his hilarious, inventive and deeply original physical comedy to our stage – expect a bit of Chaplin and Marx, juggling, sight gags, wacky characterizations and just maybe some of the funniest material you’ve seen on stage in a while. This promises to be a fun night for all ages – come alone, grab a neighbor, bring the family, pick-up the grandparents along the way and come to this show. Special advance purchase tickets on sale now – $5 for under age 18, $12 for adults. Tickets are $15 for all ages on the day of the performance.
