Bay Chamber invites the local community to experience the joy of music and support your friends and neighbors at the Odeon Youth Orchestras Spring concert on Sunday, May 20 at the Rockport Opera House at 4:00 p.m. for the Allegro, Symphony, and Chamber ensembles, and on Tuesday, May 22 at John Street Methodist Church at 6:30 p.m. for the Adult ensemble. Both concerts are free and open to the public.

The card is swiped through the machine in exchange for tokens which can be used at any of the vendor tables. Some of the vendors also accept WIC. And despite all the wet weather we’re not letting it stop us from having a rocking good,SPRINGTIME farmers’ market this Thursday, May 17th. So come out and help us leave winter behind and usher in summer with a local beef burger- AND beet burger, barbecue! Besides enjoying a tasty meal, you can visit with your favorite winter AND summer vendors, shop for garden flowers and plants or pick up that weeks’ grocery needs. There will be a warm dry kitchen, plenty of seating, and good friends and fun.
The next PechaKucha Night Midcoast Maine will be held Friday, May 18th in the auditorium of the Lincoln Street Arts Center in Rockland. Doors open at 6:30 pm and the presentations start at 7:00 pm.

Bastey will examine the the explosive viral phenomenon of Occupy Wall Street, which was originally sparked by the Canadian group Adbusters. Bastey’s talk will touch on the history of art and politics, focusing primarily on Adbusters’ technique of mirroring opposing photographs and linking media images with words critical of those images. The ArtTalk will be followed by a discussion on the impact of Adbusters’ style of using humor, art, and political essay to inspire activism.
Colby College Professor Jen Coane, PhD, and her research assistant/student Anna Caron, with the support of a grant from the Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement at Colby, will be giving a series of presentations on Memory and Aging at Spectrum Generations Muskie Center located at 38 Gold Street in Waterville. The focus of the presentations is to provide current information that is supported by research in the field about memory changes in normal aging and strategies that can benefit healthy aging.

“Women writers may or may not bear children or mother others—either literally or symbolically—but the instinct “to mother” is a profound, primal, and powerful force,” says Kirschner, who has taught at Boston College and was the 2011 Maine Arts Commission Literary Arts Fellow. “When we focus that force fully upon mothering the word, then and only then, can we fully inhabit and empower not just language but our highest literary selves.”
Béla Fleck and the Marcus Roberts Trio

So every once in awhile I feel like we get a show that everyone deserves but we are lucky enough to snag. This is one of those shows. Superstar Banjo player Béla Fleck has been coming to SMAC in some form or another since we opened. Be it with the Flecktones or with a project that is near and dear to his heart. Well this is one of those projects. THE MARCUS ROBERTS TRIO, led by Roberts on piano, Jason Marsalis on drums and Rodney Jordan on bass, are keen torch-holders of the classic jazz tradition. The mix of these four,— Roberts, Fleck, Jordan, Marsalis—create a new way forward in jazz, deeply rooted in the form, while pulling from the extensive backgrounds and music journeys of all the members—creating stellar performances that are exuberant, fresh, soaring, bold, and, of course, eclectic.

The 39 Steps is based on the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name. However, all roles in this past-paced whodunit are played by only four actors. The 39 Steps has been described as a Hitchcock masterpiece mixed with a juicy spy novel, with a dash of Monty Python.
