The City of Gardiner seeks proposals from marketing / advertising and public relations firms to create an outreach strategy for the municipally-owned Libby Hill Business Park (“Libby Hill”) as well as reinforced efforts to promote an appealing Gardiner identity to prospective businesses in Maine, New England, Québec, and the Canadian Maritimes; effective communication of Libby Hill’s business advantages and financial incentives; a strategic plan for cultivating relevant business development contacts and attendance at trade shows and trade events; and Internet-based resources and outreach that project Gardiner’s rich industrial history as a foundation for progress.

After a hiatus of 34 years, the City of Gardiner once again has produced an annual city report. The report, dedicated to the late Mayor Brian Rines, provides an insight on departmental accomplishments throughout calendar year 2011 and also provides detailed financial information about the FY11 budget. You can view the annual report on our website, view public copies in City Hall or at the Library, or purchase your own printed copy for $5 from the City Clerk’s office. Gardiner City Council will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 for public input on the following proposed zoning change: Zoning Map be changed to change the zone on several properties along Church St from High Density Residential (HDR) to Professional Residential (PR). The properties included are Tax Map 34, Lots 135, 136, 158, 159, 160, 161, and 162. The public hearing will begin at 7 p.m. For more information, contact the City Clerk’s office.

Attention Renters and Homeowners! Deadline for filing for your 2010 rent or property tax refund is May 31, 2012. If you own your own home or pay rent and have high property taxes or rental payments, you are probably eligible for a money refund from the State of Maine.The maximum benefit for the general program this year is $1,600.

On Saturday, April 28th from 10AM until 2PM, the Gardiner Police Department will be working with the DEA and local groups to participate in the National Drug Take back event. Our take back site will be located at the Gardiner Police Department. Whether you live in Gardiner or not, please bring all your expired, unused and unwanted prescription medication for safe and proper disposal. Let’s make this the largest collection yet! I write today to invite you to our next Gardiner Economic Leadership Summit, Flood Hazard Mitigation Seminar for Historic Buildings, to be held next Thursday, May 3rd 9:00 AM at Johnson Hall in Historic Downtown Gardiner. The RSVP date for this event is this Friday, April 27th.
Fire Chief Mike Minkowsky attended the annual Blaine House Conference on April 12 – 13, 2012 in Northport, Maine. The focus of this year’s conference was survivability for occupants and firefighters in structures constructed of newer light weight materials under fire conditions. The fire service has traditionally concentrated training on suppression and very little on fire behavior and fire’s impact on the latest construction techniques/materials.

A group of private citizens in Gardiner have worked in conjunction with the City of Gardiner and Gardiner Main Street to launch an initiative to purchase and install American Flags along Brunswick Ave. and Bridge Street as a way of displaying support for our brave service men and women currently serving in the US military, and those who have served in the past. The group is soliciting funds from individuals and businesses in the community so that there is no impact to the tax base for this project. Each flag costs $50 but you may make a donation of a lesser amount – all donations are welcome.
I will be hosting the inaugural “Coffee with the City Manager” event this coming Thursday, March 29 from 8 – 10 a.m. at Sweet Love/Baxter Tea in the downtown. This event is open to all members of the public who wish to chat about any topic relating to City government, although the particular theme of this month’s meeting will be on economic development. As such, joining me for this event will be Nate Rudy, our Community & Economic Development Director. I plan on making this a monthly event at different locations across Gardiner and to include every department head
