Proposed Medicare Cuts of Concern to Spectrum Generations: Hearing on May 9, 2012

The Medicare Savings Program (MSP) and Low Cost Drug Program (DEL) are vital to Maine’s seniors and need to be protected from the cutting block. Without these programs many people, both elderly and disabled, would not be able to afford Medicare part B, which essentially pays for all medical services not administered as an in-hospital patient. Potential side effects of this would be that many people would not go to the doctor for routine preventive care, but instead wait until they are very sick, or develop a chronic disease, warranting hospital admission.

Maine Residents Now Have Greater Protection Against Wind Turbine Noise

The rule making proceeding was initiated in the summer of 2010 when Maine’s Citizen’s Task Force on Wind Power brought a citizens’ petition to the Board of Environmental Protection (BEP). Friends of Maine’s Mountains (FMM) Attorney Rufus Brown assembled a team of experts and presented a solid case for enhanced protection from turbine noise emissions. Despite steadfast opposition by the wind lobby, the BEP heeded the testimony of experts, citizens and those who are suffering from the effects of wind turbine noises, and in September they provisionally adopted new rules.

Attention Renters and Homeowners! Deadline for filing for your 2010 rent or property tax refund is May 31, 2012. If you own your own home or pay rent and have high property taxes or rental payments, you are probably eligible for a money refund from the State of Maine.The maximum benefit for the general program this year is $1,600.

New Exhibition at Maine State Library “Malaga Island, Fragmented Lives”

The exhibition tells the controversial story of the poor, mixed-race community that lived on Malaga, a 42-acre island at the mouth of the New Meadows River in Phippsburg, Maine. Archaeological artifacts, historical photographs, objects, documents, and news stories from the time help bring the story to life.In 1912, Maine’s state government evicted the people who lived on Malaga Island. The Maine State Museum exhibition and public programs explore the events that preceded and followed the eviction one hundred years ago.

Wildlife Management District (WMD) 9 Will Open for Turkey Hunting 5/5/12

As of Saturday, May 5, 2012, Wildlife Management District (WMD) 9 will be open to turkey hunting through June 2nd. WMD 9 includes the area northeast of Greenville to Baxter State Park. Analysis of data and observations indicate the turkey population in the WMD is healthy and will support a hunting season like neighboring districts 10 and 14.

Moose Permit Application Deadline (May 14, 2012) Rapidly Approaching

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife reminds everyone that they have until May 14th to apply for a Moose Permit! This year’s lottery will take place at the Oquossoc Marina in Rangeley, Maine on June 23rd. Maine plans to award 3,725 permits this year. The winners will be announced first in Oquossoc, and then the entire list will be published.

State of Maine Acquires Important Seboeis Lake Acreage

The acquisition today by the State of Maine of more than 5,700 acres south of Millinocket in Piscataquis County, including 2 miles of Seboeis Lake shoreland, is expected to enhance outdoor recreation, tourism, public access and economic development throughout the region, according to state and conservation officials.

National Drug Take Back Event to be held in Gardiner on April 28th

On Saturday, April 28th from 10AM until 2PM, the Gardiner Police Department will be working with the DEA and local groups to participate in the National Drug Take back event. Our take back site will be located at the Gardiner Police Department. Whether you live in Gardiner or not, please bring all your expired, unused and unwanted prescription medication for safe and proper disposal. Let’s make this the largest collection yet! Governor Concludes Mining Bill Will Spur Hundreds of Jobs in Northern Maine

More than twenty years since Maine laws governing the permitting process for mining activity have been examined by lawmakers there is a new law that will take effect. Today, Governor Paul LePage signed LD 1853, “An Act To Improve Environmental Oversight and Streamline Permitting for Metallic Mineral Mining in Maine. The bill, which is sponsored by Representative John Martin, D-Eagle Lake, seeks to improve environmental oversight and make the permitting process for mining activity in Maine more efficient through a consolidated permitting process.
