Friends of Maine’s Mountains (FMM) congratulates the Partnership for the Preservation of the Downeast Lakes Watershed (PPDLW) for its successful efforts to protect the Downeast Lakes region of Maine. We join PPDLW and countless Maine citizens, professional guides and sporting camp owners in celebrating this significant victory.
At the Winthrop Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting on Thursday, May 3, Jaimie Logan, Governor’s Account Executive, Maine Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) (and former Chamber Executive Director) will discuss several recent changes within DECD and state government designed to improve and streamline service to small businesses.

Governor Paul R. LePage and Department of Professional and Financial Regulation Commissioner Anne L. Head announced today that a new Maine law should provide greater protections to consumers who use pre-paid home heating contracts. LD 1895, An Act To Protect Consumers by Strengthening the Laws Governing Prepaid Home Heating Oil Contracts, was signed into law as Public Law, Chapter 574, on March 30th by Governor LePage.
Maine’s First Lady, Ann LePage, joined the Veterans’ Employment Committee of the State Workforce Investment Board for a Maine Department of Labor briefing on Veterans’ services and employment trends. “It is important for the state to be responsive to the needs of Maine Veterans and military families,” said Mrs. LePage. “I am grateful for the efforts of this committee as well as the folks in the field who are working to provide greater opportunities for those who served and sacrificed for our country.”
Twenty five years ago this month, snowmelt and precipitation from two springtime storms produced some of the worst flooding in decades, particularly in central and southwestern Maine. Fourteen of Maine’s counties were declared federal disaster areas, and “the 500-year flood” resulted in significant damage to numerous homes and businesses.
Attorney General William J. Schneider announced that former Maine Turnpike Authority Executive Director Paul E. Violette, 56, of Portland was sentenced today to seven years in prison, all but three and one-half years suspended, for the theft of Maine Turnpike Authority funds.
This fall, third-generation University of Maine alumnus Doug Hall took a sabbatical from his job as CEO of Eureka! Ranch, headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, and took up residency at his alma mater. His mission: Help make Maine the No. 1 state in the nation for innovation-driven economic development. (Currently, Maine is ranked 28th by the Kauffman Foundation.) Since August, Hall has been teaching three of UMaine’s courses in Innovation Engineering®, a new program he helped launch in 2005 at UMaine’s Bion and Dorain Foster Student Innovation Center. The Innovation Engineering course offerings, open to all students interested in learning a systematic approach to creativity, are designed to help develop, refine, communicate and successfully implement new ideas.
IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. will break ground Tuesday on a $35 million expansion to the Company’s corporate headquarters in Westbrook. Governor Paul LePage, U.S. Senator Susan Collins, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, Congressman Michael Michaud and other officials will join IDEXX CEO Jonathan Ayers to announce the project and remark on its future impact on the Maine economy as well as employee life at IDEXX.

Governor Paul LePage is reaching out to learn more from Maine’s family-owned businesses through a forum created to help family businesses succeed in today’s economy. The forum begins at 9:00 am on Thursday, April 5 at Husson University’s Gracie Theater in Bangor. The forum is a 2012 community initiative by the Institute for Family-Owned Business, a non-profit organization which has served Maine’s family-owned businesses for 17 years. The public is invited to attend.
