The Casco Bay Tummlers, from Portland, Maine, have been performing klezmer music since 1988. They have released three recordings and were also featured performers on the LL Bean Holiday CD. In 1999 they created and performed the music for the world premiere of “Manifest” at Portland Stage Company.

The Tummlers have a unique sound and a stage performance that features all members of the band. Steve Gruverman brings an extensive background in ethnic dance music to his soulful clarinet playing. Carl Dimow has developed a unique klezmer flute style, making the instrument an equal solo voice in the music. Julie Goell has a rich background in theater and jazz that comes out both in her bass playing and in her vocal features. Nancy Hoffman brings a playfulness which audiences love to both her accordion playing and her singing. Hayes Porterfield keeps the traditional role as drummer happening with elements of jazz and improvisation.

The band’s repertoire is versatile, ranging from original music to traditional dances and Yiddish theater and ghetto songs – all with original arrangements. In addition to playing for concerts the Tummlers also love to play for weddings, bar and batmitzvahs, school residencies and other celebrations. Nancy is a wonderful dance teacher who is great at getting everyone up and having a good time. The Tummlers also do frequent school residencies; performing music, teaching dances and songs, and talking about the music, the Yiddish language, immigration and the Holocaust.

In March of 2000 the Tummlers were in Germany where they performed to sold-out houses at the Hackesches Hof Theater in Berlin and at the ninth annual Festival of Jewish Culture in Chemnitz. In May and June of 2000 they traveled to Lithuania as the first klezmer band to perform at the Skamba, Skamba Kankliai folk festival in Vilnius. They toured Lithuania performing in Pakroijis, Linkuva, Kaunas and Druskininkai. In October of 2004, they completed a tour of Slovenia and Northern Italy. www.cascobaytummlers.com

AUGUSTA, Maine – Author Jamie Ford’s appearance at Lithgow Public Library on Wednesday, April 18 at 6:30 p.m. is the culmination of a month-long series of events in Lithgow’s popular A Capital Read community reading program. This year marks the return of the much-anticipated event — sponsored by the Friends of Lithgow Public Library with support from Lucky Garden Restaurant — following budget cuts the past two years. The programs revolving around Ford’s best-selling novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, have included music, crafts, book groups and informative discussions.

The “Meet the Author” event with Ford on April 18 will take place in the library’s Reading Room, and is free and open to the public. Copies of the book can be purchased from Apple Valley Books at the program, and Lucky Garden Restaurant will offer complimentary appetizer samples.

Set in Seattle during the volatile years of World War II, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet is the quietly moving love story of Chinese-American Henry Lee and Japanese-American Keiko Okabe. The story begins when artifacts from Japanese families sent to internment camps during World War II are uncovered during renovations at a Seattle hotel. A man embarks on a quest that leads to memories of growing up Chinese in a city rife with anti-Japanese sentiment.

Ford grew up near Seattle’s Chinatown, the great-grandson of Nevada mining pioneer Min Chung, who emigrated from China to San Francisco in 1865.

An award-winning short-story writer, Ford now lives in Montana. His website is www.jamieford.com, where he can be found blogging about his next book, Whispers of a Thunder God.

April 26, 2012
Augusta Civic Center

A coalition of government, nonprofit and corporate leaders are announcing the 3rd Annual “Fostering Financial Literacy in Maine Schools Conference” and calling on K-12 educators to consider attending this resource-rich learning opportunity on April 26th at the Augusta Civic Center.

Organized under the auspices of the Maine Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, the Conference will feature state and national experts offering teachers, counselors and community educators specialized resources and best practices designed to include financial education in the K-12 and post-secondary experience. The event is funded largely through grants and private contributions.

Maine Jump$tart Coalition members organizing the event include Maine’s Office of Securities, the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME), the Maine Credit Union League, and the Maine Bureau of Financial Institutions.

This year’s Conference will showcase an interactive “Personal Finance Boot Camp for Educators” developed by nationally-recognized experts Dr. Barbara O’Neill and Carol Glade of Rutgers University. This concentrated training enables teachers to build capacity to incorporate financial instruction in their classrooms.

Workshops will be offered featuring financial literacy resources for Pre-K through college age groups. Other sessions will provide training on how to best utilize technology to advance personal finance education. Attendees will receive free financial education resources and materials from Conference exhibitors on a thumb drive.

Organizers are offering financial support to schools on a first-come, first-served basis to cover the $25 Conference registration fee, as well an additional $100 to meet other expenses, including a substitute teacher for the day of the event. To receive updates on the Conference and notification about registration, email info@mejumpstart.org. For additional information about the event or funding, please call Maine’s Office of Securities at 1-877-624-8551 or e-mailAlyson.B.Cummings@maine.gov.

“We’ve seen growing support by schools, teachers, businesses and community leaders for including financial education in the K-12 and young adult experience. Basic financial literacy is essential for every young person to achieve their life’s dream,” Securities Administrator Judy Shaw commented. “As Governor LePage and Education Commissioner Bowen have noted, financially capable young people are essential for a strong and vibrant Maine economy. This Conference will provide tools and resources to teachers and schools to help accomplish this goal,” Administrator Shaw added.

The Office of Securities is part of Maine’s Department of Professional and Financial Regulation. Maine Jump$tart is the state affiliated chapter of the national JumpStart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, a non-profit coalition of organizations dedicated to improving the financial literacy of pre-kindergarten through college-age youth.www.jumpstart.org
