BDA Celebratory Breakfast – May 24

Brunswick has been named a Main Street Maine community! To recognize this great achievement, the BDA will host a Celebratory Breakfast on Thursday, at 7:30 am at the Captain Daniel Stone Inn. This designation, bestowed by the Maine Development Foundation, recognizes Brunswick’s commitment to preserving the historic character of our Downtown and revitalizing our local economy.The Maine Development Foundation is a private, non-profit membership organization created to drive sustainable, long-term economic growth for Maine. Brunswick will be the first town in Cumberland County to be named a Maine Street Maine community and joins nine other communities that have achieved and maintained Main Street Maine title: Bath, Belfast, Biddeford, Gardiner, Rockland, Saco, Sanford, Skowhegan, and Waterville.

Generously being sponsored by Mid Coast Health Services, the Celebratory Breakfast will feature special Guest Speakers Laurie Lachance, President and CEO of the Maine Development Foundation and Roxanne Eflin, Senior Program Director of the Maine Downtown Center. LOL at Reader’s Theater – May 18 – 20

The Theater Project, 14 School Street, presents The Center Stage Players in LOL (or “Laughing Out Loud”), a collection of comedic pieces illustrating human foibles. The show features some original material, including a segment that highlights the idiosyncrasies of the Center Stage Players themselves. 18th Annual Brunswick Bike Rodeo / Family Safety Day – May 19

The Brunswick Rotary Club in conjunction with the Town of Brunswick Parks & Recreation and Police Departments, Merrymeeting Wheelers, Walmart, Mid Coast Hospital and Center Street Cycles are sponsoring this event at the Brunswick Walmart parking lot, Saturday from 9 am to noon. FREE and open to the public, there will be bike safety checks, assistance with helmet adjustments, and a bike safety course. Upon completion of the course, kids can enter a drawing for a new bicycle. They’ll even provide helmets for children who do not have them. Over 12 local and regional public safety organizations are also participating with static and interactive displays. This spoken word event sponsored by Spindleworks will take place Tuesday, at 7 pm at the Frontier. Deadline for Early Bird Special for Parkview Golf Classic – May 22

The deadline for the special pricing offer on the Friends of Parkview Adventist Medical Center Auxiliary’s Eleventh Annual Golf Classic has been extended to May 22nd for BDA members. The price, with the price break ($25 off per player) is $100 per golfer and includes breakfast, greens fees and cart, lunch and awards ceremony. The tournament will take place on July 10th at the Brunswick Golf Club. Proceeds benefit projects sponsored by the Friends of Parkview Auxiliary, which raises money for improving community wellness, health services, and to provide state-of-the-art equipment to Parkview. Every Little Step Documentary Screening – May 23

Maine State Music Theater will present this award-winning documentary on Wednesday at 7 pm at Frontier Cafe and Cinema in Fort Andross, followed by a Q&A session with two members of the cast of the original Broadway production of A Chorus Line. The documentary highlights the phenomenon of the musical and its recent Broadway revival and relates it to the cultures in which it was performed. Both exhibits will be extra special since Sheila Bohlin, the inspirational and beloved Head of the MTA Art Department for 38 years, will be retiring at the end of this academic year. Downtown Brunswick Window Box/Planter Competition – entries due June 1

This summer, Brunswick’s Village Improvement Association will conduct this competition among Brunswick businesses on or near Maine and Pleasant Streets. Any live floral beautification that enhances the exterior appearance of a business will be eligible. Entries will be judged in mid-July. Prizes include $250 for 1st place, $200 for 2nd place, several non-monetary certificates awarded for Honorable Mentions, as well as a $100 prize for Best New Entry. Brunswick’s Hidden Gems Photo Exhibit is on display in the entryway at Curtis Memorial Librarythroughout the month of May. This Historic Preservation Month activity is sponsored by the Village Review Board. In addition, during the month of May, selections from the photo series will be featured in the Times Record. Frank’s Two Cents

I’ve been telling everyone for months, May will come and we’ll be pay for our “easy” winter.  Here it is the middle week of THE month of spring and we’re getting wet, cold, gray yuck! I should not savor my success……

After a wonderful Mother’s Day!!?? My free time at home focuses on finishing up inside so I can move to my outside projects, and the Center is using this week much the same way. We have to get our raised beds ready for planting, and suddenly there seems to be a drum roll building for “hoss-shoe” pits and a rousing season.

A few brave souls braved the weather last week and made our first “Walk the Walk” down to the 250th park, and all seemed to have fun. We had a great mix of old pictures, new stories and interesting questions. If YOU haven’t been, “down in there,” go check it out, and come by the Center to check out our pictures.

I’m expecting this week’s Author’s Chat (Wednesday, May 16, 2PM) to be huge!

Ed Webster, Mount Everest survivor will be at the Center with his amazing stories and incredible photographs.

Don’t miss it!

Thursday at noon is Lunch & Connections. Chicken & Sausage in a delightful stir fry, roasted veggies, and strawberry rhubarb crisp for dessert. Still the best buy in town for only $5, complete with door prizes and a 50/50 raffle!

The quilting ladies meet this week, the Kimmage’s pilates classes are up and running, we have 6-7 tables for cribbage on Wednesday, table tennis four days each week, modern dance, Yoga, line dancing, Suzanne’s Loosen UP is near capacity…..ho-hum, just another busy week at People Plus.

No wonder we’re well on our way to 1,000 members, people are realizing we’re the place to be!

Second Friday ArtWalks – starting May 11 

Hosted by Five Rivers Art Alliance every second Friday of the month, May through October, from 5-8 pm, over 55 local Maine artists will be displaying their work at studios, galleries, and at pop up venues throughout Downtown Brunswick including Fort Andross, 98 Maine Street, the Captain Daniel Stone Inn and at the Inn at Brunswick Station. “Brunswick’s Hidden Gems” Walking Tour – May 12

Led by Brunswick archaeologist and historian Fred Koerber, the tour will focus on the town’s hidden history. The tour will begin outside the main entrance of Fort Andross and will also explore the Brunswick 250th Anniversary Park. This Historic Preservation Month activity is sponsored by the Village Review Board. FMI call the Brunswick Planning Department at 725-6660.

Brunswick Train Platform Ribbon Cutting Event – May 14

A Platform Ribbon Cutting Event will be held this coming Monday, at 11:30 am at the train station at Brunswick Station. An Amtrak Downeaster train will be available for touring following the ceremony from 12 – 12:30 pm.

Children’s Concert at The Rumpus Room – May 15
Come in to The Rumpus Room for a day of music and fun on Tuesday, at 10:30 am. Award-winning children’s musician, Matt Loosigian, will be putting on an interactive show, free with admission. Now under new ownership and open on weekends! FMI visit www.facebook.com/therumpusroom.

Frank’s Two Cents

Look out May, here we come. I saw Mayflowers last week, anyone picking Fiddleheads? The season really is a crazy one, isn’t it?

The Lunch Out! gang is crossing the Frank Wood bridge to Topsham on Tuesday for Lunch at the 99 Restaurant, popcorn anyone?

Everyone know who Frank Wood was??  I have the answer and we’re telling the stories on Wednesday morning, during the Center’s first “Walk the Walk” tour. We explore the “urban unexpected,” in the 250th Park and see pictures of how the area has changed over the decades. Donuts at Frosty’s are optional, if only because we will have just finished yet another marvelous monthly Men’s Breakfast just minutes before.

Who planned THAT????

Jack Hudson is back to Computer basics this week, Tuesday and Wednesday at 10 a.m. “Only the basics” is a great chance to get your feet wet in computers, taught as only Jack seems to do it. Class IS open only to members and you MUST pre-register… one of Jack’s secrets is keeping the classes small and interesting.

Connie Bailey’s combined art classes have created a marvelous, multi-media art show for our Gallery.  It is wonderful! Friday evening May 11, they will be “our” stars in the first of the season 2nd Friday Art Walks.

Speaking of our artists, there is just a shred of truth in the rumor that the Tuesday class will be sharing the benefits of a “LIVE” model!!!

Lastly, this week is “Game on!” week. Thursday at three, we have the hottest game of dominoes in town, and there’s hope we’re going to have the Wi Game up.

Arts are Elementary and Spindleworks Art Center will host the Third Annual All Species Parade on Friday at 4 pm at the Brunswick Mall. All are invited to attend. Come dressed as your favorite species, help to carry one of our large-scale puppets or just enjoy the spectacle. Following the parade, an opening reception for A Natural Order, an exhibit of species, will be held at Frontier Cafe from 5-8 pm. Artwork by Spindleworks artists as well as artists from Maine and around the country will be on display for purchase. 20% of every sale will go to the Coastal Humane Society. Register Now – The BDA will host a Celebratory Breakfast on Thursday, at 7:30 am at the Captain Daniel Stone Inn. Generously being sponsored by Mid Coast Health Services, the event will feature special Guest Speakers Laurie LaChance, President and CEO of the Maine Development Foundation and Roxanne Eflin, Senior Program Manager of the Maine Downtown Center. Learning Land Nursery School’s 50th Birthday Celebration – May 28

All current and former Learning Land students, staff and families are invited to walk or ride their bikes or wagons with Learning Land in the Brunswick-Topsham Memorial Day Parade, and/or join them from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm for the celebration at 9 Cleaveland Street. Downtown Brunswick Window Box/Planter Competition – entries due June 1

This summer, Brunswick’s Village Improvement Association will conduct this competition among Brunswick businesses on or near Maine and Pleasant Streets. Any live floral beautification that enhances the exterior appearance of a business will be eligible. Entries will be judged in mid-July. Prizes include $250 for 1st place, $200 for 2nd place, several non-monetary certificates awarded for Honorable Mentions, as well as a $100 prize for Best New Entry. 2nd Annual Brunswick Fly-In – June 2 & 3

In 1996 the Village Improvement Association (VIA) planted Maine Street flowers in 4 median beds and 20 baskets, with a $2,300 budget. This summer the VIA will plant 11 beds – vibrant burgundy, orange, fuchsia and yellow – at a cost of $10,678. The Whatnot Gallery at Spindleworks, 7 Lincoln Street, will host a collaborative mail art exhibit “Return to Sender”. It’s Earth day, folks, this Sunday.  Plant a tree, walk someplace rather than ride, enjoy a glass of water rather than a soda…..do something, ANYTHING, that makes you walk lighter on our earth.

We start the week (tomorrow!)

with a special “Spring Cleaning” day with volunteers from Comcast and we need your help!  Come on out tomorrow morning at 8AM for cleaning up, fixing up, raking, washing, working, and making better.

What a great day we will have!  Hoping for a BIG turn-out!!! I know the weather will wait!

People really seemed to like the Shrimp Wiggle yesterday at our luncheon! Thanks Captain Mike for the deal on the shrimp, Gladys, Rose, Madeleine, Dottie, Lorraine and the rest of the gang, you are really something else! Love it when you make ME look good!

This week is supposed to provide some much needed rain!

I hope everyone comes to learn at the Balance and Falls program with the pt’s from Head to Toe PT on Monday.

Facilities

Memorial Hall, a striking Gothic-style granite and stained glass memorial to Bowdoin’s Civil War veterans, was completed in 1882 and houses the College’s main performance spaces. Pickard Theater, a generous gift of Frederick William Pickard, L.L.D., in 1955, includes a 600 seat theater with proscenium stage equipped with a full fly system and computer lighting.

Renovations of Memorial Hall in 2000 included a complete remodeling of the main theater, and construction of the 150 seat, flexible Wish Theater, made possible by an extraordinary gift from Barry N. Wish ’63 and Oblio Wish. Renovations also include a fully equipped design classroom, new seminar rooms, expanded rehearsal space, and a new dance studio.

We have three large dance studios – Maine Street (Brunswick) Station, Sargent Dance Studio and Memorial 601.  All have a sprung marley floor, high ceilings and natural light.  They are all available for students to sign out for use.  Maine Street (Brunswick) Station Studio has a smaller prep room attached.

Memorial 108 also has a sprung floor.  It is traditionally used as a theater rehearsal or performance space.

Drake Lobby – two story glass lobby connecting Memorial Hall and Wish Theater used for post-show talks and receptions and occasionally  performance.

Pickard Theater – 600 seat proscenium theater.
Wish – black box with flexible seating.

The Smithsonian Magazine recently named Brunswick, Maine one of America’s ‘Best Small Towns’, citing some of our cultural treasures as the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, The Frontier Cafe, Cinema, & Gallery, The Theater Project, Brunswick Outdoor Arts Festival, and Maine State Music Theatre. The magazine looked for towns with “high concentrations of museums, historic sites, botanic gardens, resident orchestras, art galleries and other cultural assets common to big cities” in municipalities with populations smaller than 25,000. Downtown Preservation Award Nominations – Due April 27

The BDA is seeking nominations for the 2012 Downtown Preservation Award. This award recognizes the people and organizations that create tangible value in the heart of our community through renovation or restoration of existing buildings, or through new construction that restores and enhances the traditional streetscape. Retail, residential, and institutional buildings are eligible for consideration, as are infrastructure improvements. Projects completed in prior years may be nominated. Include the name and location of project, owner’s name and contact, significance historically, presently, and contribution to Downtown, start and completion dates, investment if available, and noteworthy workmen, materials, or features. Second Friday ArtWalks – starting May 11

Every second Friday of the month, May through October, from 5-8 pm, over 55 local Maine artists will be displaying their work at studios, galleries, and at pop up venues throughout Downtown Brunswick including Fort Andross, 98 Maine Street, the Captain Daniel Stone Inn and at the Inn at Brunswick Station. Spend a great evening Downtown, enjoying live music, beautiful artwork, terrific shopping, and fabulous restaurants. If you, or anyone you know, are able to volunteer, the ArtWalk could use your help. They are looking for guides for Fort Andross to help visitors figure out where they need to go within the building and help them get there if needed. Clean Sweep – May 12

Brunswick will hold its Annual Clean Sweep initiative Saturday from 8 am to noon. The Brunswick Downtown Association, working together with the Department of Public Works, Brunswick Parks & Recreation, other civic organizations and volunteers will give Maine Street a fresh face for spring. Volunteers are needed to help with sidewalk sweeping and weeding. No registration is necessary. Just show up that morning, check in at the BDA table in front of Senter Place on Maine Street to receive your work assignment and a free long sleeve t-shirt (while quantities and sizes last). Cuba Week – April 20-29

The annual Cuba Week celebration of Brunswick’s sister city with Trinidad, Cuba begins today. Presented by Brunswick-Trinidad Sister City Association (BTSCA), this year’s Cuba Week theme is Cuba’s love of baseball. The vision of BTSCA is to foster a spirit of friendship and cooperation with citizens of Trinidad, Cuba and the Brunswick area, person-to-person and community-to-community. Lopez Piano Concert – April 21

Bowdoin College Artist in Residence, George Lopez, will be performing at 7:30 pm Saturday, at the Orion Arts Center. Tickets are $15 and benefit Brunswick’s Unitarian Universalist Church. Medication Collection – April 28

Merrymeeting Bay TRIAD, local law enforcement, and partners including CHANs Home Healthcare and ACCESS Health are conducting this collection, Medication Collection of unused medications at the McLellan Building, 85 Union Street and at the Topsham Municipal Building, Saturday from 10 am – 2 pm. TRIAD is looking for volunteers to assist at the McLellan Building site. Each person would work only a two-hour shift as a Greeter (standing) or at the Intake Table (sitting) instructing people to fill out a short ‘intake’ survey form. Dear Fellow Cinephiles:

What is it about a film with a Swedish director, a Scottish actor, two British actresses, an Egyptian actor playing a Yemen sheik, an Oscar-winning writer that penned a film that took place in India (Slumdog Millionaire), and a title that sounds like a fishy documentary, that did so well that I must hold it over for another week???? Maybe the international stew I just described is the reason. Or maybe just because this is such a wonderful film – very Zen in a way.No matter the reasons,Salmon Fishing in the Yemen has proved to be the right bait to lure you into the theater, even on nice, sunny, Spring days. Film festivals that honor Iranian films are held annually around the globe. Along with China, Iran has been lauded as one of the best exporters of cinema in the 1990s. Some critics now rank Iran as the world’s most important national cinema, artistically, with a significance that invites comparison to Italian neo-realism and similar movements in past decades. World-renowned Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke and German filmmaker Werner Herzog, along with many film critics from around the world, have praised Iranian cinema as one of the world’s most important artistic cinemas.

I studied a couple of Iranian filmmakers for my MFA at Boston University, including Abbas Kiarostami and Asghar Farhadi. After spending classroom time seeingDancer in the Dust and The Beautiful City, I knew that Farhadi had greatness in him. And with A Separation, that greatness has been rewarded as it was the recipient of this year’s Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. So forget any images you have of Iran of being only oil, politicians and Mullahs, spouting anti-American rhetoric, and come watch a beautiful, touching film that breaks down all language and cultural barriers.

Ribbon Cutting for It’s All Good Consignment – April 6

Director of Togus Maine to Visit People Plus to Discuss Veteran’s Benefits

Brunswick- On Wednesday, April 4 at 6:30 PM Scott Karczewski, Director at the Togus VA Regional Office, and Jack Hudson, former Veterans Service Center Manager at Togus, will make a presentation on VA benefits. The presentation will include the rules for establishing eligibility to service connected compensation benefits, and non-service connected pension benefits. It will detail the steps in the claims process for each benefit, to include the required evidence.

They will also detail the conditions that can be granted on a “presumptive basis”. That refers to disabilities that can be granted as service connected solely because a veteran served in a certain location at a particular period of time.  It will also include information regarding benefits for surviving spouses,  and burial benefits.  Claims forms will be available, and assistance will be provided on initiating claims as time permits.

People Plus supports an engaged, healthy, and independent life for older adults, while joining others to build community for all ages. We are dedicated to intergenerational community participation and support and offer numerous choices for fitness and wellness services, recreation and learning opportunities, education and outreach.  Through our programming, we seek to address the social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual needs of all our members, and to promote their independence.  We work to link older adults with younger people, in order to enrich the lives of everyone.

Dear Fellow Cinephiles:

Director Paul Weitz has charted an interesting if not schizophrenic, course with his career. His short output includes what is perhaps the quintessential teen gross-out comedy(when someone has sex with an apple pie, I define that as either a “gross-out” comedy or a Hostess executive reacting to an extraordinarily  healthy annual report) American Pie, He has also done the final (God please help us) installment in the Meet the Parents “franchise” Little Fockers, and, oddly enough in comparison to these concoctions,  the absolutely wonderful, understated, poignant and altogether ADULT Nick Hornsby-adaptation of About a Boy. Go figure.

He now attacks Doug Sirk melodrama territory with Being Flynn, bringing together two-time Oscar winner Robert DeNiro and up-and-coming Paul Dano seen in Little Miss Sunshine and There Will Be Blood. (Or was that that Little Miss Blood and There Will Be Sunshine? I forget. Doesn’t matter. Julianne Moore’s in it and she rocks.)

The BDA is seeking nominations for the 2012 Downtown Preservation Awards. This award recognizes the people and organizations that create tangible value in the heart of our community through renovation or restoration of existing buildings, or through new construction that restores and enhances the traditional streetscape. Retail, residential, and institutional buildings are eligible for consideration, as are infrastructure improvements. Projects completed in prior years may be nominated. Book Signing with John D. Davis & Janet Baribeau – March 24

Join the  Pejepscot Historical Society on Saturday, from 1-3 pm, to get your books signed by John Davis and Janet Baribeau, the authors of Early Wings Over Maine and A Bailey Island Girl Remembers. A Bailey Island Girl Remembers includes personal reminiscences of Janet’s life on Bailey Island as well as the history of some of the island’s inhabitants as far back as the 18th century. This 5th annual dinner is sponsored by Henry and Marty’s Restaurant and will feature local organic foods, sustainably raised and harvested in Maine. Tickets are $35 per person.
