Wonders of the Rainforest SOLD OUT – Monday, May 14th at 10am NEW SHOW ADDED – Monday, May 14th at 11:30am This award-winning, highly entertaining and educational show will allow the students to meet some of the world’s most exciting and fascinating Rainforest animals from the safety of their seats. Wildlife Encounters will showcase live animals and products from the Rainforests around the world and talk about their survival, natural history, geography, natural behaviors and conservation education.
The Ellsworth Grand Auditorium is a premier venue for arts and entertainment in Maine. Through May 5th the Grand will bring you Massenet’s Manon, Lunafest, The Bagaduce Chorale Spring Concert, The Battle of the Bands Benefit for YMCA. and Verdi’s La Traviata. CineGrand: The Rum Diary – Adapted from the classic novel by Hunter S. Thompson, this film concerns American journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) who finds himself at a critical turning point in his life while writing for a run-down newspaper in the Caribbean, amidst a group of expatriate lost souls all bent on self-destruction. With Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard, Giovanni Ribisi and Richard Jenkins.
A Hollywood stunt performer (played by Ryan Gosling) who moonlights asa getaway driver, gets involved with various thugs while quietly romancing his neighbor (Carey Mulligan). With Albert Brooks, Bryan Cranston, Christina Hendricks and Ron Perlman.
In a first for movie audiences, the big-screen presentation of ‘Leonardo Live’ gives art lovers the world over the opportunity to share in the excitement of viewing the unprecedented and historic exhibition, in the comfort of their local movie theater. The exhibition brings together the largest ever number of da Vinci’s paintings, including a new, never-before-seen Leonardo painting. The program was captured on the eve of the exhibition opening in November 2011 — the cinema screenings in February will feature extra content.
The moment your character steps out on stage, the audience reads and registers that character’s physical presence, stance, movement. We’re so used to doing this in life that we bring the skill to the theater with us. The actor’s job is to use his or her own body to reflect that of another person. This Movement for Actors workshop will start with some simple limbering exercise and progress quickly into working with imagery.
As part of Poetry Out Loud, a nation-wide annual poetry competition for high-school students, The Grand will be hosting a workshop with Maine Poet Laureate Wesley McNair on Thursday, January 26th at 4:00 pm. All high-school age students are welcome to join this workshop at no charge, sponsored by the Maine Arts Commission. The workskhop will be an opportunity to study poetry and recitation with a master.
Support for the event is community wide, with businesses helping with advertising and musicians donating their talents. Local performers include MacLir Ceilidh Band (Celtic), Bobbi Lane (blues), Stesha Cano and Ben Layman singing duets, and Live Bait (traditional fiddle band). Finn’s Irish Pub will offer a cash bar for beer and wine in the lobby.
