The Maine duo Cinder Conk plays music from the Balkans and elsewhere in Eastern Europe.The Bates College outreach program “Rollin’ to Olin,” launched last fall to give local schoolchildren experience with music and visual art at the college’s Olin Arts Center, resumes this month.

2nd Annual Bates Folk Music Festival to Begin on Friday, Feb. 10, 2012

Contradancing, workshops and performances by established musicians from as far away as Montana are among the attractions at the second annual Bates College Community Folk Festival, a two-day event beginning at 4:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, in Chase Hall Lounge, 56 Campus Ave. The event is open to the public. Admission fees vary according to ability to pay, from $5 to $20 for one day, or $10 to $30 for both days (no one will be turned away for inability to pay). Tickets are available at the door. Formed in the spring of 1990, The Irish Descendants, have been a mainstay in the Newfoundland and Canadian music industry for over two decades. In that time the band has performed over 4000 shows across North America and beyond! With the founding members all hailing from various outpost fishing communities, the original goal for the group was to take the music that they all learned and performed home in their kitchens, to the festival stages, pubs, and concert halls of their beloved Newfoundland.

A total of 68 grants will be awarded to the organizations listed on the ballot and to the top 20 write-in vote recipients (at least two write-ins per region). The top vote-getting organizations in each region (including write-ins) will receive $5,000 each. The remaining 60 organizations will receive $1,000 each.

One of Russia’s foremost pianists and a master teacher, Tamara Poddubnaya returns to perform at the Franco-American Heritage Center in Lewiston. A distinguished graduate of St. Petersburg’s Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory, Dr. Poddubnaya soon established herself as one of Russia’s foremost keyboard artists and piano teachers. Renowned for her masterful command of a vast repertoire, she has performed to great acclaim in Europe and the United States.
