There was great anticipation in Sewall Hall Friday afternoon as dozens of invited guests gathered to be the first to see the Museum’s latest acquisition – a newly commissioned model of the world’s largest wooden sailing vessel, the schooner Wyoming. After a few words from Executive Director Amy Lent, Senior Curator Nathan Lipfert and the model’s builder Mark Wilkins, the crowd’s curiosity was satisfied as the drape was removed from the display case and the six-mast schooner model was revealed.

It’s hard to believe that May is here already–it seems like just last week we were gearing up for the school year and creating new curriculum for our themed project, ‘Searching for Maine, Searching for Me.’ Now we have our new anthology in hand and are racing to make our annual Big Night event the most engaging, creative party you’ve been to this year. We hope you’ll all find time to join us this Friday night at USM to celebrate what has been an amazing year of programs with over 2,000 of Maine’s most creative kids. We have a great lineup of interactive projects and a dynamic stage show in store, so bring your kids, your parents, your siblings and your friends to celebrate with us. See you all there!

By The Who’s Pete Townshend and Des McAnuff Directed by Michael Donovan The Who’s 1969 rock opera Tommy, brings to life the story of a boy named Tommy who is traumatized into catatonia by witnessing his father commit murder. Rock classics such as “Pinball Wizard” and “See Me” bring us along as we follow Tommy out of his catatonic state and into superstardom as an international pinball superstar, and face to face with his young self in the end.

Tom Constanten (Grateful Dead)/ Lazy Lightning & Band Beyond Description at Big Easy May 10, 2012

Constanten was adopted as the seventh member of the Grateful Dead during the recording of the band’s second album, Anthem Of the Sun (Warner Brothers, 1968). The pianist was a child prodigy who wrote orchestral pieces as a teenager while growing up in Las Vegas. In the summer of 1961, TC met Dead bassist Phil Lesh at Berkeley, where each professed a love for classical music. The two became roommates and enrolled in a graduate-level course taught by Berio at Mills College in Oakland.

Forward: I have been a fan, and The Valley Voice has been a vehicle of promotion for Sarah Blacker and her talent over the last several years. It is noteworthy that Sarah and I have also become good friends via emails. We regularly communicate on our lives and times and I must say that I have come to admire, respect and love Sarah for all that she is as a caring human being, a hard-working artist/performer and gifted songwriter. I know where I’ll be on April 29th. Perhaps you should be there is well. Sarah will put on a show that you will long remember. G.T.

Come purchase a copy of this year’s book, see many of our programs featured during a live performance in USM’s Hannaford Hall, and meet some of the 2,000+ student writers we’ve worked with during this school year.
