The Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed (FOCW) and Lakeside Motel, Cabins & Marina are hosting the Winthrop Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours event on Wednesday, May 16 from 5 to 7 pm (Rain Date: Wednesday, May 23). The event, with sponsorship from Bangor Savings Bank, will be held at Lakeside in East Winthrop (77 Turtle Run Road). Enjoy a cookout on beautiful Lake Cobbossee, boat rides courtesy of Clark Marine, ice cream from the Otter II, and great raffle prizes donated by local merchants.
Concert promoter and local musician Ed DesJardins will host legendary musician David Sancious on Friday April 20th in Winthrop. David Sancious first came to the music industry as an original member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. He formed the group TONE in 1974 and recorded several albums of original compositions. Performing on keyboards and guitars, and as composer and producer, David has recorded and toured with a wide variety of some of the most notable talent in the music industry.
Students from both the Middle School and High School will be performing. There are 21 acts, everything from current top 40 hits sung by students to a Celtic dance. Group numbers will include the High Schools new Jazz Band. This marks the 24th year of the production, with a new music director Michelle Tondreau in the directors chair. Regardless of your tastes, the Winthrop Cabaret is more than likely to have a acts that will entertain and please you.
Applications are now being accepted by the Winthrop Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce for the 25th Annual Winthrop Sidewalk Art Festival to be held (rain or shine) on Saturday, August 18, 2011, from 10 am to 4 pm in downtown Winthrop. Known as one of the best art festivals in Maine, the event features many high-quality artists and draws attendees from throughout the region.
The Winthrop Drama Club competed March 9 and 10 in the One Act Regional Drama Festival at Skowhegan High School. Winthrop won the Class B division with the play Queen of TE, a show written by their director David Setchell. Winthrop will now go on to compete in the Class B State Drama Festival at Yarmouth High School on March 23 and 24. Winthrop will perform on Friday evening in the 6PM block.
At the Winthrop Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting on Thursday, April 5, Ryan Neale, Program Director, Maine Development Foundation (MDF), will speak about the recently released 2012 edition of the economic report, Measures of Growth in Focus. The report is issued annually by the Maine Economic Growth Council, a non-partisan group established to develop a long-range economic plan for the state that falls under the auspices of MDF.
The Skye Theater (New England Celtic Arts) will bring famed PEI fiddler Ward MacDonald and his troupe to the Winthrop Center Friends Church in East Winthrop on Wednesday, March 14. Opening for the PEI fiddlers is The Maranacook String Band, a Bluegrass Band made up of Maranacook Community High School students and alumni.
At the Winthrop Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting on Thursday, March 1, Jaimie Logan, Governor’s Account Executive, Maine Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) (and former Chamber Executive Director) will discuss several recent changes within DECD and state government designed to improve and streamline service to small businesses.
The Winthrop Area Chamber announces the change of its name to the Winthrop Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce. At its annual meeting in October, the Chamber membership approved a bylaw change that was required to adopt the new name, the Winthrop Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce, which went into effect on January 1, 2012.
Winners of numerous SAMMY Awards, Savoca and Heitzman have appeared on The Today Show, A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage, Big Top Chautauqua, The Vancouver, and the Edmonton & Winnipeg Folk Festivals. Central Mainers have local musician, and concert organizer, Ed DesJardins to thank for bringing this duo back for another powerful performance. DesJardins himself will be opening for Savoca and Heitzman at the upcoming concert, which starts at 7pm.
