The Maine State Library compiled Maine in the Civil War, a selected bibliography in recognition of the war’s sesquicentennial. This bibliography includes general resources; memoires, diaries and correspondence and regimental histories but is not inclusive of every Civil War-related item in the Maine State Library’s collection. In his introduction, Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr, Maine State Historian says, “To these categories, I would add that the Maine State Library and many other institutions have major holdings in Civil War period newspapers, which are an invaluable source of information about both the home front and the battle front between 1861 and 1865.” Shettleworth concludes with, “On the pages of this bibliography are the books which contain ‘the mystic cords of memory’ that link us to a defining moment in the history of our state and nation.”

Open Mic w/Mike

The Sweet Love open mic is particular special in that it is one of the very unique open mics that is available to all age groups. Since Sweet Love is not a bar, youthful musicians use this open mic as an opportunity to learn and hone new skills. A friend of mine was at last weeks open mic and said he was amazed at the amount of young talent that showed up and the interaction between them and some of the older players who come along.

If you are a player and are looking to improve you chops, you should drop by. They have a great turn-out and lots of talent will be in the room.

See you there!

Dear Fellow Cinephiles:

How do we top The Descendants? Perhaps with the utterly sublime silent film The Artist. The Artist is nominated for:

Best Picture

Best Actor (Jean Dujardin)

Best Supporting Actress (Berenice Bejo)

Best Director (Michael Hazanavicius)

Best Original Screenplay (Michael Hazanavicius)

Best Original Score, Best Cinematography

Best Art Direction,

Best Film Editing and…

Best Costume Design

What’s It about? The silent, black-and-white feature follows Jean Dujardin as George Valentin, a silent movie star, who — after the premiere of his latest film — has a serendipitous run-in with a beautiful fan named Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo). Soon after, Valentin discovers that studios are no longer interested in financing his beloved silent flicks, opting instead for the futuristic “talkies.” And the new, up-and-coming star of these films? The aforementioned Peppy. Valentin spends the rest of the film trying to reclaim the stardom he once held with help from Peppy.

Why should you see it? Unless you were born at the turn of the 20th century, you will be told by people less sophisticated than you, that you should be uninterested in seeing a silent movie. However, don’t let that D.O.B. get in the way; after all, what makes this movie Oscar-worthy isn’t its lack of sound, but the compelling performances and terrific story. If that doesn’t sound good, perhaps you will be interested in the scene-stealing Jack Russell terrier (played by Uggie the dog).

The Artist
Directed by: Michel Hazanavicius
Starring: Jean Dujardin, John Goodman, Bernice Bejo

Contradancing, workshops and performances by established musicians from as far away as Montana are among the attractions at the second annual Bates College Community Folk Festival, a two-day event beginning at 4:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, in Chase Hall Lounge, 56 Campus Ave.

The event is open to the public. Admission fees vary according to ability to pay, from $5 to $20 for one day, or $10 to $30 for both days (no one will be turned away for inability to pay). Tickets are available at the door. For more information, please contact freewillfolk@gmail.comor 952-913-0204.

The event is sponsored by the Freewill Folk Society, a student organization at Bates. Vouchers for meals in the Bates Commons will be for sale. See a full schedule for the festival.

The event opens Friday with an open mic featuring Bates musicians. Friday’s highlights include performances by Ari & Mia, from Boston; Sawyer Lawson, a Bates senior from Concord, Mass.; and the Tumbling Bones, from New York City. Contradances and a waltz session begin at 7 p.m., with supporting musicians including Ari & Mia, the Bates ensemble Chase the Fiddlers and the electro-folk Maine duo Perpetual e-Motion. Kim Roberts of Farmington calls the 7 p.m. contradance and Chrissy Fowler of Belfast calls the 10:30 contradance, with the waltz session in between.

The Press Gang is a Celtic-music trio based in Portland, Maine.

On Saturday, members of the Portland-based Celtic trio The Press Gang and Nicole Singer are among musicians presenting workshops from 11 a.m. to noon. The Press Gang offers a concert at 1 p.m., and a contradance follows at 2 p.m., with music by Montana’s Sassafras Stomp. Callers include Alex Krogh-Grabbe of Cambridge, Mass.; Andrew Stout of East Longmeadow, Mass.; and Tavi Merrill of Orono, Maine.

“The participatory nature of folk music is what sets it apart,” says Catherine Elliott, a Bates senior from Edina, Minn., and an organizer of the festival. “People are invited to partake in the singing and playing, or just listening, and there’s a common understanding that each person’s contribution is important.

“Folk isn’t about perfection and refined technique, but rather about creating the opportunity for people to experience music together.”

The festival made its debut in 2011. It came about in part because of research done by Kaitlin Webber of Cazenovia, N.Y., an anthropology major in the class of 2011 who was writing a senior thesis investigating the role of young people in contemporary contradance communities. (Contradancing is a form of social folk dancing found in the Northeast.)

“Kate organized the festival as an experiential component of her thesis,” says Elliott. “But those academic reasons aside, the festival is also a classic case of a big vision and a lot of hard work among several festival organizers.

“We’re excited to carry her idea forward this year.”

About the Performers

Ari & Mia are sisters who bring classical training in cello and violin to a wide range of genres with American folk music of the Southeast and Northeast at the heart. Their 2010 album Unruly Heart reached No. 2 on the national folk radio charts only two months after its release.

Chase the Fiddlers is a folk band composed of Bates students and faculty including Greg Boardman, of Auburn, a longtime presence in the Maine folk music scene.

Sawyer Lawson grew up singing and playing drums, fiddle and mandolin in his family band. A guitarist as well, he is concentrating these days on performing his own material.

Perpetual e-Motion consists of Ed Howe, playing electric fiddle, and John Coté, on electronically treated guitar, didgeridoo and foot percussion.

Shown in performance at She Doesn’t Like Guthrie’s, in Lewiston, are Perpetual e-Motion — Ed Howe and John Cote.

The Press Gang, composed of squeezebox player Christian “Junior” Stevens, fiddler Alden Robinson and guitarist Owen Marshall, perform all over the Northeast and into Atlantic Canada.

Sassafras Stomp, dedicated to original and traditional music emphasizing fiddle, are fiddler-banjoist Johanna Davis and guitarist-bassist Adam Nordell.

Tumbling Bones is a trio playing old-time American music on guitar, fiddle and banjo. Former members of the Powder Kegs, they are Peter Winne, Jake Hoffman and Sam McDougle.

Today, the Natural Resources Council of Maine released an analysis of documents that reveal how a recent Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) report was substantially influenced by representatives of out-of-state companies that opposed enactment of Maine’s product stewardship laws[1] in the first place, are working to defeat similar laws in other states, and who received easy and preferential access to top DEP officials in the new LePage Administration. The NRCM analysis is based on documents acquired under Maine’s Freedom of Access Act (FOAA) law.

The DEP report Implementing Product Stewardship in Maine, released in late December for public comment, addressed five product stewardship programs administered by the state that have reduced mercury and lead pollution to Maine’s environment, diverted millions of pounds of waste from Maine’s landfills and incinerators, and saved money for taxpayers and municipalities. The five product stewardship programs[2]were adopted with overwhelming bi-partisan support.

But rather than focusing on the benefits of these programs to Maine people and the environment, DEP’s Product Stewardship report presents a surprising assault on the product stewardship programs, including a recommendation to consider their termination. NRCM reviewed hundreds of internal DEP emails, memos, and documents related to preparation of the Implementing Product Stewardship report.

“Our review shows that senior DEP officials have maintained an open door policy for out-of-state manufacturers interested in undermining Maine’s product stewardship programs and a closed door policy to all other stakeholders—including interested lawmakers, internal DEP staff who manage the programs, municipalities, and public interest organizations,” said Abby King, NRCM Product Stewardship Advocate.

“Industry representatives have been gunning to weaken product stewardship programs here in Maine so that they don’t face similar programs in other states,” added King. Findings from the NRCM analysis include the following:

·Senior DEP officials met with representatives of the Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC) at least 10 times over the past year. TRC is comprised of Honeywell, GE, and Westinghouse, and they have long opposed Maine’s thermostat recycling program—even as Maine’s program has proven to be one of the most successful of its kind in the nation.

·In a response letter to State Rep. Melissa Walsh Innes (D-Yarmouth), then Acting DEP Commissioner Patricia Aho committed to supporting a “robust” stakeholder process on product stewardship—but no effort has been made by DEP to initiate such a process. Quite the contrary, the letter to Rep. Innes was sent two days after Aho met with TRC, and DEP held multiple additional meetings with TRC over the past seven months. No effort has been made to engage other stakeholders in a meaningful way.

·TRC recommended in February 2012 that DEP conduct a “review” of Maine’s thermostat recycling program. DEP launched such a review, receiving input through private channels from TRC throughout this review period. And when the review was complete, with a recommendation to possibly terminate some product stewardship programs (including possibly the thermostat program), TRC “fully supports” the effort to sunset the program.

·Senior DEP officials delegated the role of “reviewing” Maine’s product stewardship programs to a newly reassigned staff member, Kerri Malinowski, who was not previously familiar with the programs. DEP staff members who manage Maine’s product stewardship programs were deliberately excluded from providing information.

·DEP’s review of Maine’s product stewardship programs resulted in a seriously flawed report that is rife with inaccurate, unsubstantiated, inconsistent, and incomplete information, as demonstrated by the strong concerns voiced in public comments. More than 308 individuals and 34 organizations submitted comments in opposition to DEP’s report, compared with only seven letters of support—six of which were from out-of-state manufacturers.

Maine is not the only target of concerted attacks on product stewardship programs designed to shift some taxpayer-funded recycling costs to the manufacturers that produced the products. Indeed, many of the very individuals who have been frequenting the offices of DEP this year have been traveling through the halls of state government elsewhere.

In California, for example, the Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC) is fighting regulations that would impose collection rate standards on that state’s thermostat recycling program. “Policy-makers in California are looking to Maine’s thermostat program as a guideline for ways to improve our program,” says Annie Pham of Sierra Club California. “But TRC is working hard against us, even as their voluntary thermostat collection program shows a pitiful first-year collection rate of 3.2%.”

Similarly, in New York, the thermostat industry has spent $90,000 in the past two years lobbying to block passage of an effective thermostat collection program. “The pattern of the thermostat industry in New York is to cover up the success of Maine’s collection program and tout their voluntary collection program instead,” said Laura Haight, senior environmental associate with the New York Public Interest Research Group.

In 2008, according to TRC’s collection data, Maine’s per capita thermostat collection rate was the highest in the nation, and more than 20 times higher than New York’s. After 2008, TRC stopped making its data available to the public.

NRCM carefully reviewed public comments submitted to DEP by the January 16 deadline, and from that analysis created a long list of errors, omissions, and inconsistencies in DEP’s report. (Appendix D of the report)

“Although we’re not particularly surprised by the extent to which out-of-state lobbyists have been pounding down the doors at DEP, we are troubled to see how eager DEP has been to assist industry in trying to undo programs that are working well for Maine people,” said King.

“DEP’s product stewardship report presents such a flawed, incomplete, and biased view of Maine’s product stewardship programs that the report should be retracted,” said NRCM Advocacy Director Pete Didisheim. “The report’s content and conclusions are so obviously indefensible that the report’s continued appearance on the DEP website reflects poorly on the credibility of the DEP.”

1.Maine’s product stewardship programs, passed with overwhelming bi-partisan support, are focused on toxic and troublesome products in the waste stream and require manufacturers to establish collection systems to recycle or properly dispose of them.

2.The programs addressed: mercury-added lamps; mercury switches in motor vehicle components; mercury-added thermostats; electronic waste (e-waste), and dry cell mercuric oxide and rechargeable batteries.

Kicking off the New Year in style, Sierra Hull & Highway 111 have already been to Portland, OR for River City Music Festival; The beautiful Akron Civic Theatre in Akron, OH; and the Broyhill Civic Center in Lenoir, NC. Even more exciting is that Sierra and the band were in the CMT studios last week performing for a new online program, Live@CMT! Stay tuned for details. This weekend the band is headed to Upstate New York for the Winter Village Bluegrass Festival this Saturday, January 28. They hope to see you there! (see article below for festival information).

Jake Stargel is the newest member of Sierra Hull & Highway 111, playing lead guitar. Jake is a native of Georgia, and at 21 years of age, has a phenomenal feel for his instrument. He is blazing a trail to become one of the masters of the genre. After being named the Georgia Flat-picking Champion as a very young teen, Jake first came to national attention with stints in The Lovell Sisters at the age of 15; later as a member of the Grammy nominated The Greencards; with the band Bearfoot; and most recently with Mountain Heart. Jake is featured in the March/April 2012 issue ofFlatpicking Guitar, which will be on newsstands sometime next month.

Sierra explains, “Jake has always been someone that I thought I would love to be able to play in a band with. He has amazing musical sensibility, which is really important when playing in a band. Hearing him play makes me only want to get better, and I think that’s the ideal band member in many ways – someone that makes you want to grow!”

In addition to the guitar, Jake also plays piano, mandolin, mandola and electric guitar. Jake’s intensity, fire, and unbelievable musicianship are the stuff legends are made of!

Meet Caleb Gilbreath

He is originally from the small town of Waxahachie, Texas
and a 2011 graduate of Boston based Berklee College of Music. Caleb had a double major in Performance; and Music Production and Engineering. He is a talented percussionist as well.

Caleb completed Berklee’s five-year program in four years, and managed to continue studying both of his passions simultaneously, receiving awards from both the Percussion and Engineering departments along the way.

Sierra says, “Since Caleb began working with us in May of 2011, the band has taken on a whole new dynamic. He’s a ‘get it done’ kind of guy, and we are so grateful to have him join our team! He is not only a great engineer, but an amazing drummer and percussionist.” If you’ve been wondering why the band sounds so good lately, you can thank Caleb for that.

A few very important “by the ways” before you order
1. Please use cash or checks only when you come to a show…….
We do take credit cards for tickets only, but when you come here to the Arts Center we ask that you try to use cash or checks. We appreciate the convenience of using plastic for online purchasing, but we don’t want to raise our food and beverage prices to cover the cost of credit card processing. If it’s all ya got that night, we will take it of course…we have even taken IOU’s! We are very flexible.
2. Why is there a handling fee?
We get this question a lot. A handling fee is a necessary evil for us to collect what we need to bring the performer here, sell the tickets, and keep it personal which is what this experience is all about. We try to keep it a low as possible. We know you enjoy talking to Marlies or Katy or me to get your tickets or tell us some of your special requests. Like when you call to ask if you “made a dinner reservation” or “can we squeeze one more at our table”, or “what time is the show” or “I have a dietary issue”. You won’t get to do that anywhere else. That personal touch costs a little more, but I think you would agree its worth it and we would like to remain a place where you can talk to someone. Besides, a lot of venues with automated ticketing charge handling fees anyway….most much higher than us.

3. Our Dinner .…
Most nights our dinner menu consists of three specials which could include entrees like, chowder, chili, pasta, a meatloaf or a pork roast dinner, two to three pizzas and two salads that can be topped with seafood or chicken……anything that can be prepared and served quickly since we are often serving 150 people in about 45 minutes. We want it to be delicious, fast, affordable, and small to avoid waste (and that can limit our options). It is hard for us to do special orders, but if you have any dietary issues we welcome you to call us so we can try to accommodate you ahead of time.

Dinner is served most nights from 6 – 7:15 pm. The kitchen will stop taking orders forty-five minutes before the performance starts in order to avoid any disturbance while the artist performs. Because our space is limited, tables are generally for four, six, eight or ten. Tables for two are rare. You will likely make some new friends while you are here. If you prefer a table for just two, be sure to reserve a Table for Two with a View in our Balcony.

4. Can we bring children to the show?
I will never say you cannot bring your child to a show…but I will say, most shows are not appropriate for a small child or a baby who may not have the attention span of an adult. It is a rare young child who can sit through a concert without fussing….if you have one of those rare children, bring’em along by all means. But I have seen children here too young to even be up by the time the show starts, never mind sit through it…and the child has become understandably fussy. That fussiness will and has disturbed the folks around you who have spent their hard earned money to see a show in a distraction free environment. It will also totally stress you out. Our place is very intimate and very little noise can be times ten here. It is really just a matter of common sense and courtesy when it comes to deciding to bring your children or not.

5. Sponsors….
Sponsors are businesses that support a show financially in trade for advertising and exposure. They are a major organ to the intricate body that is SMAC…. and we never have enough of them. We have thousands of people locally and from away visiting our site and our hall each month. Its a great way to reach them and support us at the same time. If you’d like more information about our advertising / sponsor opportunities, click here.

6. Ticket Prices.…..
Our ticket prices are based on the artist fee which is the same regardless of the venue seating capacity. If the ticket is high it is because the artist fee is high. Our choice is to charge what we charge to cover their fee or not bring that big artist here at all. We know our audience enjoys the unique experience of an up close and personal performance by their favorites yet we also try to have a variety of shows for a variety of pocketbooks.

7. Why do we do this?….
We do this because we wanted to bring music to the country. As residents we felt there was a void in quality concert production, not only in our area but all over New England, and thought we could make a difference. We never imagined it would take off like it has, and “if you build it, people really will come”. We have tried and will continue to try to make this one of the most special concert experiences possible. If you keep comin’, we will keep strummin’ !

OVERVIEW

In association with Colby College’s Pugh Community Board, 3 films (when possible, screened in original 35mm prints!) by Spike Lee in anticipation of his Colby appearance:

Wed. Feb. 8: CROOKLYN: Lee’s nostalgic yet utterly unsemtimental remniscence of growing up in Brooklyn in the early 70s features a pre-pubescent female protagonist, a charmingly low-key but emotionally compelling storyline and a toe-tapping soundtrack of vintage soul music. PG-13. 112 Min.

Wed. Feb. 15: MALCOLM X: Powered by an unforgettable performance by Denzel Washington, Lee’s epic portrait of the slain activist who defined a tougher approach to racial equality is riveting, enthralling and amazing. PG-13. 205 Min.

Wed. Feb. 22: DO THE RIGHT THING: Lee helped define contemporary American cinema with this incredibly charged drama, diving head-first into a maelstrom of racial and social ills, using as his springboard the hottest day of the year on one block in Brooklyn, New York. R. 120 Min.

OVERVIEW

Academy Award Nominee: Glenn Close, Best Actress!

Glenn Close’s slam-dunk Best Actress Academy Award Nomination is just one of three earned by this memorable film. “Delicate business is being transacted in this tight and engrossing drama of sexual identity. Set in 19th-century Ireland, the film focuses on a woman who passes as a male butler in a Dublin hotel just to survive. Glenn Close plays Albert with transcendent restraint. Close has a history with the role. She won an Obie for Simone Benmussa’s 1982 off-Broadway play based on a story by George Moore. Her range, energy, originality, humor and intelligence merit serious Oscar attention. And then there’s Janet McTeer, who is pure pow as Hubert, a house painter also passing as a man. There’s a difference. Hubert has made a life for himself with a wife, while Albert stays closeted. It’s Hubert who gives Albert the courage to court a hotel maid (Mia Wasikowska). As directed with grit and grace by Rodrigo García, this quietly devastating film goes bone-deep.”—Peter Travers, Rolling Stone. R. 114 Min.

SHOWTIMES

Coming Soon!

OVERVIEW

Golden Globe nomination: Viggo Mortensen, Best Supporting Actor! “A drama that examines psychoanalysis in Zurich circa 1904 has no business being this riveting”—Us. “In this erotic mind-bender from director David Cronenberg, talk isn’t cheap, it’s what helped birth modern psychiatry at the start of the 20th century. Swiss therapist Carl Jung (an outstandingly good Michael Fassbender) is giving the “talking cure” to Russian Jew Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), a howling sexual hysteric with an itch to shrink heads herself and get the married Jung to spank her, for starters. This goes against the belief of Jung’s Viennese mentor, Sigmund Freud (a purring Viggo Mortensen has a high old time playing a man who likes to have the last word). Screenwriter Christopher Hampton sets up a duel between the men with Spielrein as prime instigator. Leave it to Cronenberg to make the cerebral sizzle.”—Peter Travers, Rolling Stone. R. 99 Min.
