SPECTRUM GENERATONS’ William S. Cohen Community Center announces today that 32 local cribbage players participated in the Second Annual Cribbage-A-Thon benefit held at the Cohen Center located at 22 Town Farm Road in Hallowell on Friday, May 18, 2012. Since early April, participants sought out sponsors and collected donations totaling $1,638.00 for the event.

All proceeds benefit Spectrum Generations’ Cohen Community Center’s Health & Wellness Program. Prizes of gift certificates to local businesses were award in seven categories. Lydia Day raised the most funds; Priscilla Wescott and Arden Clement had the highest overall score; Tony Willman and Carl Gowen came in second and Edith Falcone and Lily Coombs placed third. Theresa Couture won highest hand in game three and Donna Magras won highest hand for game eight.

Special thanks to Ken Morrison for helping us organize and run this event. According to Maggie Tardiff, Center Director at the Cohen Center, “Once again our card players in the Second AnnualCribbage-A-Thon fundraiser put their best foot forward and secured donations from family and friends to help keep Spectrum Generations’ programs running strong! The continued support of our community for this event never ceases to amaze me.” Cribbage is played at the Cohen Center each Monday from 1:00 to 4:00 PM and is open to the public.

Frank’s Two Cents

I’ve been telling everyone for months, May will come and we’ll be pay for our “easy” winter. Here it is the middle week of THE month of spring and we’re getting wet, cold, gray yuck! I should not savor my success……

After a wonderful Mother’s Day!!?? My free time at home focuses on finishing up inside so I can move to my outside projects, and the Center is using this week much the same way. We have to get our raised beds ready for planting, and suddenly there seems to be a drum roll building for “hoss-shoe” pits and a rousing season.

A few brave souls braved the weather last week and made our first “Walk the Walk” down to the 250th park, and all seemed to have fun. We had a great mix of old pictures, new stories and interesting questions. If YOU haven’t been, “down in there,” go check it out, and come by the Center to check out our pictures.

I’m expecting this week’s Author’s Chat (Wednesday, May 16, 2PM) to be huge!

Ed Webster, Mount Everest survivor will be at the Center with his amazing stories and incredible photographs.

Don’t miss it!

Thursday at noon is Lunch & Connections. Chicken & Sausage in a delightful stir fry, roasted veggies, and strawberry rhubarb crisp for dessert. Still the best buy in town for only $5, complete with door prizes and a 50/50 raffle!

The quilting ladies meet this week, the Kimmage’s pilates classes are up and running, we have 6-7 tables for cribbage on Wednesday, table tennis four days each week, modern dance, Yoga, line dancing, Suzanne’s Loosen UP is near capacity…..ho-hum, just another busy week at People Plus.

No wonder we’re well on our way to 1,000 members, people are realizing we’re the place to be!

frank@peopleplusmaine.org

Save the Date!
Safe Driving Course
AARP certified safe driving instructor Joseph Hahn is planning 2 AARP classes this Spring!
Thornton Oaks on 5/10 at 8:30 AM and People Plus on 6/11 from 12:30-4:30 PM. Call Mr Hahn at 751-9364 to reserve your spot!

Clean Sweep – May 12
Brunswick will hold its Annual Clean Sweep initiative this Saturday, from 8 am to noon.
Spectrum Generations is pleased to announce that it has expanded its Adult Case Management team to better serve the needs of adults with physical and intellectual disabilities in Central Maine. The newest member of the team, Shelly Maheux LeBlond brings her experience in children’s and mental health services and person centered planning coordination to this growing field.

Supervisor Sandy LaBelle, and her staff of Case Managers, work collaboratively with consumers, families and providers to access resources and services both in the community, home, and work. This enhances independent living skills, promotes good health, well-being, and participation in the communities in which they live. Clients are helped individually to develop a plan to identify their needs and desires, and then closely monitored during implementation of the plan. Above all, Spectrum Generations Case Managers have great respect for each consumer and advocate strongly for their rights.

According to Sandy LaBelle, “It is a pleasure to work with a team that is dedicated to providing top notch service during a very trying time with state economic changes. Maintaining good communication within that system is vital to linking folks to services that are truly needed.”

Spectrum Generations is central Maine’s Area Agency on Aging and Aging and Disability Resource Center. Its mission is to promote life-long learning, health, wellness, nutrition, community engagement and social well-being of all older and disabled adults. For more information about Spectrum Generations Adult Community Case Management services, call Sandy and her team at 1-800-639-1553 or visit the agency web site at www.spectrumgenerations.org.
Frank’s Two Cents

Look out May, here we come. I saw Mayflowers last week, anyone picking Fiddleheads? The season really is a crazy one, isn’t it?

The Lunch Out! gang is crossing the Frank Wood bridge to Topsham on Tuesday for Lunch at the 99 Restaurant, popcorn anyone?

Everyone know who Frank Wood was?? I have the answer and we’re telling the stories on Wednesday morning, during the Center’s first “Walk the Walk” tour. We explore the “urban unexpected,” in the 250th Park and see pictures of how the area has changed over the decades. Donuts at Frosty’s are optional, if only because we will have just finished yet another marvelous monthly Men’s Breakfast just minutes before.

Who planned THAT????

Jack Hudson is back to Computer basics this week, Tuesday and Wednesday at 10 a.m. “Only the basics” is a great chance to get your feet wet in computers, taught as only Jack seems to do it. Class IS open only to members and you MUST pre-register… one of Jack’s secrets is keeping the classes small and interesting.

Connie Bailey’s combined art classes have created a marvelous, multi-media art show for our Gallery. It is wonderful! Friday evening May 11, they will be “our” stars in the first of the season 2nd Friday Art Walks.

Speaking of our artists, there is just a shred of truth in the rumor that the Tuesday class will be sharing the benefits of a “LIVE” model!!!

Lastly, this week is “Game on!” week. Thursday at three, we have the hottest game of dominoes in town, and there’s hope we’re going to have the Wi Game up.

Every day is different at People Plus, every day’s better when YOU participate. Join us and find out what all the fun is about!

The Medicare Savings Program (MSP) and Low Cost Drug Program (DEL) are vital to Maine’s seniors and need to be protected from the cutting block. Without these programs many people, both elderly and disabled, would not be able to afford Medicare part B, which essentially pays for all medical services not administered as an in-hospital patient. Potential side effects of this would be that many people would not go to the doctor for routine preventive care, but instead wait until they are very sick, or develop a chronic disease, warranting hospital admission.

The result is much higher treatment costs – not just for them, but for all of us. Most of these people would also not be able to afford life saving medications without forgoing some other needed items, such as food and heat.

For those who qualify, MSP pays the $99.90 Medicare Part B premium that would otherwise be deducted from their Social Security check, and also pays their Medicare Drug Plan monthly premium, keeping their co-pays at the pharmacy low. For those who qualify at the lower income level, they would also receive MaineCare as a supplement to fill in the gaps for what Medicare does not cover or pays a share. The Low Cost Drug Program for the elderly and disabled program wraps around their Medicare Drug Plan and reduces their co-pays even more at the pharmacy.

Mainers are traditionally a proud people, not wanting to take help and always believing that someone else needs the help more. For them to actually accept this help speaks volumes, because really, if they did not “have to” they would not! The Appropriations Committee is due to vote on these programs May 9. Get involved, let your voice be heard!

Spectrum Generations invites you to join us at our community centers located in Waterville, Hallowell, Topsham, Rockland and Damariscotta to celebrate Older Americans Month, May 2012. This year’s theme –Never too Old to Play - puts a spotlight on the important role older adults play in sharing their experience, wisdom, and understanding – and passing that knowledge on to other generations in a variety of significant ways.

Come meet new people, make new friends, and celebrate the fact that you are never too old to play! Special events and activities planned to show appreciation for “older Americans” include lunch and learn programs, health and fitness classes, dinner dances, free health screenings, lectures, spa day, games, live entertainment and a Celebrate Life Party. Details about these and more activities can be found in the May 2012 Center Newsletters by visiting www.spectrumgenerations.org and clicking on the Center Events button.

Lifelong participation in social, creative, and physical activities has proven health benefits, including retaining mobility, muscle mass, and cognitive abilities. Spectrum Generations helps older and disabled adults live healthier and remain independent by promoting life-long learning, good nutrition, community engagement, and fun activities in its seven community centers spread across central Maine.

For the 12th year, eligible Maine seniors can sign up for the Maine Senior FarmShare Program, under the Maine Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Resources, starting immediately, according to Department officials. Qualified participants will be able to receive $50 of fresh produce during the season from local farms.

“This is such a great program with so many benefits for Maine people-I have a special appreciation for it,” Agriculture Commissioner Walt Whitcomb said. “Not only do Maine seniors receive the best that Maine farms have to offer, this program also helps our family farms by keeping them operating, producing outstanding products, and by creating jobs.”

The Maine Senior FarmShare Program is funded by a federal grant from the US Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service, Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP). Of the $20.6 million annually received for state grants by the SFMNP, Maine’s 2011 award was just over $1 million, and the program served 18,739 seniors around the state.

“The program this year expects to serve about the same number of people with free produce from approximately 127 Maine farmers,” Julie Waller, Maine Senior FarmShare program manager, said. “I know how important this program is to Maine people. “Our elders comment that the free, fresh produce helps their budgets and their health and wellbeing. Our farmers love the interaction with the program recipients and, of course, it helps them financially as well.”

Based on a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model, a Senior FarmShare is an agreement between a participating farmer and a qualified senior on how and when a senior will receive their benefit-$50 of fresh produce. Both parties agree in advance by writing the terms on the Senior FarmShare agreement. Seniors contact participating farmers directly to sign up to participate. The number of Senior FarmShares is limited at each farm. Farmers sign up seniors on a first-come first-serve basis.

Maine’s innovative approach, in which agreements are signed early in the season, enables the Maine Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Resources to pay farmers in advance for the produce that they pledge to supply to seniors later in the season. The majority of money is disbursed in the spring, during April and May, when farmers are most in need of funds. Last year, participating Maine farmers were provided with a total of $908,346.

Participating Maine farmers offer a variety of methods for providing produce to seniors. Seniors pick up their produce at a specific farmers’ market, or at their farm or farm stand. Some farmers offer delivery to seniors at their home or housing site. Farmers must provide a broad range of produce during a core eight-week period. Eligible produce includes fresh, unprocessed fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

To qualify for a Senior FarmShare, a participant must be a Maine resident, at least 60 years old, and have a household income of not more than 185 percent of the federal poverty income guidelines ($20,147/individual; $27,214/two-person household).

The Department administers the Maine Senior FarmShare Program in collaboration with other agencies and organizations, including the Maine Nutrition Network; University of Maine Cooperative Extension; and Maine Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Elder Services.

- Seniors can contact the Area Agency on Aging at 877-353-3771 to find a participating farmer. The list of participating farmers is also available on the Internet at http://www.getrealmaine.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/home.showpage/pageID/77/index.htm

**Comments Received on the Maine Senior FarmShare Program**

**From Participating Seniors:**

*”I really appreciate the FarmShare Program. As a senior on a fixed income, I wouldn’t enjoy as many fresh vegetables without it.”* *”I hope everyone appreciates this program as much as I do. I love veggies and had a garden all my life. At 93, I just can’t anymore, but I am still on my own!”* *”The food was invaluable to my health and well-being.”*

*”I am in my 80s, a vet of WWII and Korea, and I think the FarmShare is something to be so thankful for.”*

*”The quality, freshness, and very generous bags full-delivered to our Senior Apartment Complex!”*

*”Thank you for giving me the produce; I never knew how much better tasting fresh veggies were!”*

**From a Participating Farmer:**

*”Many of our senior participants have had gardens of their own and we have learned a great deal from their experiences and have received some wonderful recipes from them. Our seniors have so much knowledge and experience that we feel lucky to be able to get to know them better. We love being able to give out produce and, of course, the program gives us a big financial boost in the springtime when we need it most. We are so grateful for our seniors and for this program.”*

We Sustain Maine is Spectrum Generations newest senior nutrition initiative that supports Maine farmers by including Maine food products in its Meals on Wheelsand community dining programs. Nearly 300,000 meals are prepared and delivered annually to homebound seniors and disabled adults through Meals on Wheels. The program, which covers 6 central Maine counties, assures that recipients have a healthy hot meal allowing them the freedom to live independently in their own homes. According to Spectrum Generations CEO, Gerard Queally, “By bringing food from the fields of Maine farms to the plates of Maine’s seniors, We Sustain Maine reduces senior hunger, supports Maine farmers, and ultimately helps Maine’s economy by reinvesting local dollars back into our communities. It’s a win-win opportunity.”

Last fall, the Meals on Wheels Association of America and Walmart Foundation awarded Spectrum Generations with a start-up grant, calling We Sustain Maine New England’s most innovative Meals on Wheels initiative. The kick-off event is sponsored by Walmart, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Meals on Wheels Association of America, and Spectrum Generations.

The kick-off event helps build awareness and raises funds for We Sustain Maine. Celebrities from 92 Moose – the #1 Hit Music Station will be on hand to provide music and prizes during a live radio remote. Spectrum Generations will be cooking hot dogs and providing chips, cookies, and beverages for a nominal donation. Walmart is also accepting donations from shoppers for die-cut Meals on Wheels mobiles, available at cash registers. Kick-off event proceeds will enable Spectrum Generations to bulk purchase and properly store Maine food products in season, when it’s most fresh and nutritious.

For more information about We Sustain Maine, Meals on Wheels, or the kick-off event, contact Spectrum Generations at 1.800.639.1553 or go online at www.spectrumgenerations.org. Spectrum Generations is a leader in advocating for rights and services for older and disabled adults.

Schneider is warning people with diabetes to beware of a medical scam involving diabetic supplies. Recent reports in Maine involve telephone calls from someone claiming to be from Medicare who offers diabetic and other medical supplies in exchange for Medicare information. Some Medicare consumers have received diabetic supplies that were never ordered and even after repeatedly informing the mail order company that they purchase their diabetic supplies at a local pharmacy, the shipments continued.

“People with diabetes have become the target of criminals who want to steal your Medicare number,” said Attorney General Schneider. “Safeguarding your personal information, including your Medicare number, is the best step Maine consumers can take to prevent medical identity theft.”

Attorney General Schneider offers the following tips for diabetic patients and other Medicare beneficiaries: 1. Be suspicious of anyone who offers free medical equipment or services and then asks for your Medicare or financial information. These calls are not coming from Medicare, diabetes associations or other similar organizations. 2. Do not provide your Medicare number, social security number, or other personal information over the phone. 3. Do not accept items that you did not order. Refuse the delivery and keep a record of the sender’s name and the date you returned the items. 4. Check all of your medical bills, Medicare summary notices, explanation of benefits and credit reports. If you spot unusual or questionable charges, first contact your health care provider to be sure it is not just an error. 5. Report medical identity theft and Medicare fraud. The Maine Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) connects callers to their local Area Agency on Aging to help Mainers file reports with the appropriate Medicare/MaineCare entities. Call 1-877-353-3771 or go to http://www.maine.gov/dhhs/oes/community/mmep.shtml

I wonder which Roman thought it was a good idea to add a day in February?

Wouldn’t Leap Year’s extra day have been better used in August?

February has to be the most grim, most useless, least used month of the year. Unless you are developing the People Plus habit….

At People Plus, you can play table tennis, take fitness classes, sharpen your computer skills, work on puzzles, play dominoes with a new friend, volunteer, draw, knit or write, get your taxes done, and provide community services!

We hope a large group attends our first ever social this Wednesday (Sadie Hawkins Day) at 2PM! Live music, fancy eats, great company.
Thank Scott Lemieux and Ameriprise Financial for supporting this event.

We also want you to join one of our community shared meals like breakfast or lunch, our Write on! gang, our Cafe en Francais, or our Civil War discussion group.

I’ll close with this wild guess! No matter what your interests may be, we have it covered at People Plus. Come see us at the Center that Builds Community!

One in every three seniors over the age of 65 will have a fall this year. Geriatric Care Management is a little known service that can bring a world of change to caregivers living near or far away. The Home Safety Assessment is a detailed review of a consumer’s home which includes all livable space, storage, basement, garage and the grounds immediate surrounding the home.

Care Managers help by:

·Communicating or mediating difficult family meetings

·Making sense of the situation and offering solutions to make it manageable again

·Providing consultations to help prepare for the unexpected

·Determining what care is needed to keep your loved one living independently

·Reviewing the living arrangements for safety and making recommendations for improvement

·Performing a benefits eligibility check

·Coordinating care when multiple agencies, doctors, and professionals are involved

·Determining options for care

·Ensuring there isn’t duplicative care

“The Home Safety Assessment provides a much needed service in this region. It helps aging adults maintain independence at home, and their families can breathe a little easier. It has quickly grown to be our most popular Care Management Service,” said Kristin Overton, Director of Spectrum Generations Bridges Help at Home Division.

Pat Greenleaf, LPN and Professional Geriatric Care Manager, is accepting referrals and questions at 623-0764 x 102. The public is invited to call Spectrum Generations Consumer Helpline at 1-800-639-1553 or visit the web site located at www.spectrumgenerations.org

Frank’s Two Cents

Ah-h-h, February! Our shortest (and sometimes cruelest) month! If you watch the degree days, or believe in groundhog, you know we’re on the right side of winter, and spring is just a few weeks (or months) away. Anyway, we hope by now you have realized that People Plus should be part of your survival plan.

Remember, besides our wide selection of classes, the coffee is always on, there’s a puzzle table in our Cafe, and we have four, FOUR! computers awaiting your needs in our Cyber Cafe. Spring will be here before you know.

I’d love to know what you think!

Call, email or stop by to see me anytime! I would love to hear from you and welcome all comments & suggestions!
