NOTES FROM THE PRODUCING DIRECTOR

Things are hopping around Acorn this month as we present our biggest event of the year:”The Maine Playwrights Festival.” This year’s event includes the usual evenings of short plays, the third edition of the 24-Hour Portland Theater Project, 2 staged readings, and a new evening of performances titled “Take Two” consisting of 2 different interpretations of ten 2-minute plays. All of the fun starts Tuesday with a kick-off event title “Write Right Wright” featuring playwrights reading their poems, essays and short stories. We hope that you will be able to check out at least one of these wonderful events that showcase the great talents of Maine-based writers and actors.

Classes for children at theAcorn Acting Academy begin next week, and we have some exciting new offerings, including a production class of “Little Red Riding Hood,” the next offering of the Fairy Tale Players. We have added a new teacher, Michel Toth, to our faculty and changed some of our class times and days to help you work around your child’s busy schedule. Adult classes start towards the end of the month, and we are pleased to welcome back Michael Howard to our teaching faculty. Register early for our popular “Writer’s Improv” class as it does fill up, and look for an announcement soon about another writing class we will be offering in Portland.

If you are planning on registering your child for one of our Summer Acting Camps be certain to do so this weekend to take advantage of last year’s prices. While we try to keep all of our programs affordable and low-cost, rising costs do cause us to periodically adjust our tuition rates for inflation. We have a number of exciting sessions planned for students this summer, including 2 sessions of “Fractured Fairy Tales,” and we have programs for children as young as 6 and as old as 14.

One of the most significant changes in our programming is that we have decided to endNaked Shakespeare’s monthly Wine Bar shows in order to focus on producing our annual Teen Shakespeare production, which is an adaptation of Hamlet this year, and our audience wlak-through performance installation of “All’s Well On The Waterfront” this June (part of the Portland Performing Arts Fringe Festival). Look for an announcement soon about the new Acorn Shakespeare Conservatory a two-year training program for actors that will begin in the fall.

We are grateful to everyone who contributed to our recent fundraisers, the Bowl-A-Thon and our Kickstarter campaign. THANK YOU. If you did not donate at one of these events but would like to support Acorn, please visit our website to donate through PayPal ordownload our fundraising letteras we do rely on individual donations for approximately 10% of our annual operating budget. We certainly wish we lived in a society that provided government support for the arts, but unfortunately, as all non-profits we do have to turn to our supporters to help fund our free and low-cost programs. We appreciate your understanding of this economic reality.

See you at the theater!

OVERVIEW

Wow! “PINA, Wim Wenders’ shockingly beautiful and moving tribute to the late German choreographer Pina Bausch, is a dance movie that brings the audience to the performance in a way a traditional documentary could never do – and in ways that even being in a theater, watching live, won’t accomplish. This meditation on movement and space, transportation and transcendence is not to be missed. It’s a loving (and playful) eulogy, a celebration of a creative force. If the best dance performances mirror life, then Pina – nominated for a documentary Academy Award- takes the mirror image and magnifies it, vitalizes it. Wenders shoots the members of Bausch’s ensemble in the cars of a gliding monorail, on busy street corners, on the barren ridge of an industrial wasteland, in sleek modernist buildings and elegant gardens. Wenders says “until now, movement as such has never touched me.” He went on to explain how he had learned to value what body language, what human motion and force and grace, can do. With Pina, his revelation becomes ours”—Stephen Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer. In English and in German with English subtitles. PG. 106 Min.

A story of love against the most unlikely home for it, IN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY is an unforgettable cinematic experience. “”…introduces the idea that war is very much about the violent domination of women and not just about nation-states, ethnic conflicts, historical grudges and men killing men….moves briskly and easily holds your attention…”—Manohla Dargis, N.Y. Times. In Bosnian with English subtitles. R. 127 Min.

5 Academy Awards including Best Picture of the Year!
Best Actor (Jean Dujardin) and Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius)!

Already the Golden Globe winner for Best Picture (Comedy or Musical), named Best Film of the Year by the New York Film Critics and countless others, THE ARTIST received 10 Oscar nominations and won 5! “The year’s most euphoric screen experience belongs to—incredibly—a black-and-white silent film. In 1920s Hollywood, actor George Valentin (the magnificent Jean Dujardin) is the Clooney of cinema—until the “talkies” take over and his fame crumbles. Only starlet Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo) keeps faith in his talents. Even without dialogue, the film’s touching, dramatic and beguiling sentiments come through loud and clear”—Us. PG-13. 100 Min.

Nominated for 2 Oscars—Best Screenplay and Best Foreign Film–A SEPARATION has drawn, by actual count, THE best of reviews of any film released in the past year. A truly involving drama about an Iranian couple whose marriage dissolves over family loyalties, A SEPARATION is “…an urgently shot courtroom drama designed to put you in the jury box…. As the great Sam Fuller said,’ “The end of this story will be written by you!’“—J. Hoberman, Village Voice, “A world-class masterpiece…. Flawlessly crafted, brilliantly performed and elegantly photographed, it follows a succession of disastrous consequences that flow from the marital split, and that pose profound moral questions without venturing judgments”—Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal.
OVERVIEW

The title of Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s very highly regarded film conjures Italian director Sergio Leone, but it plays out as a juxtaposition of a famous Eugene O’Neill title as in A Long Night’s Journey into Day. It is an antidote to the glib portrayals of murder and the police investigations that solve them on American television. A doctor, a prosecutor, and a team of police officers fitfully prowl the desolate Anatolian steppes in the dead-of-night in a three-car caravan following a confessed murderer’s instructions to find his victim. The hauntingly beautiful landscape offers glimpses of familiarity only to repeatedly yield no body. Amongst the seemingly idle chatter of men engaged in a somber mission, revelations of character, metaphysical perspectives, and even clues about the crime slowly bubble forth as if written by Chekhov. Once Upon a Time in Anatolia is certainly in no rush to wrap up its tale and even less inclined to present it to the audience with a neat bow. Though demanding great patience and concentration from filmgoers, the film offers rich rewards as day dissipates the cloak of night and the gears of the legal system whir to record the gleanings from the night’s work. Winner of the Grand Prix at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia is Turkey’s representative for the 2012 Foreign-language Oscar. “…my own (Cannes) best-of-fest list; the first is the one I’d most like to see win the Palme d’Or: Once Upon a Time in Anatolia.”—Geoff Andrews, Sight and Sound. “…an epic and rigorous sideways portrait of a night and day in a murder investigation… that demands we keep our eyes and ears open… the only masterpiece in the Cannes competition (and) should have won (the Palme d’Or)”—Dave Calhoun, Time Out (London). I would have chosen (Once Upon a Time in Anatolia) as the best film (at Cannes). By the end of the film, you have a portrait of the Anatolia region in Turkey where you can’t ever tell what’s really true.—John Powers, National Public Radio. (In Turkish with English subtitles). Unrated. 157 minutes.

SHOWTIMES

One Show Only!
Wednesday, March 21 at 7:00

OVERVIEW

Some of the year’s best documentaries will play at this spring’s “Wednesday Doc Nights” which runs through April 18. After the screenings, join film journalist and instructor Anthony Kaufman (Variety, indieWIRE. Utne Reader) and special guests for discussions about nonfiction filmmaking and timely social issues.

March 21: The Pruitt-Igoe Myth (Chad Freidrichs, 83mins). Called “devastating” and “an engulfing real-life horror story” by the NewYorker, this expertly crafted and emotionally trenchant examination of institutionalized racism and the decline of the modern American city takes its name from an infamous 1950s housing project that turned out to be a colossal failure‹”a slow motion Katrina,” as one historian called it. While St. Louis’ notorious Pruitt Igoe development became synonymous with the worst parts of ghetto life‹crime, drugs and squalor‹this insightful film exposes the root causes of the collapse, and debunks the myths that still circulate about public housing today. “Superb. An uncommonly artful example of cinematic journalism” (Variety).

The playwrights of Dearly Departed and The Dixie Swim Club invite you to a family reunion. In this Southern-fried comedy the Verdeen cousins – Gaynelle, Peaches, and Jimmie Wyvette – have agreed to host the annual gathering of the wildly eccentric Verdeen clan. Self-righteous aunt LaMerle reminds them that the eyes of Texas are upon them, with good reason.

Gaynelle has been found innocent of deliberately crashing her car into her ex-husband’s girlfriend’s double wide but she must still prove her sanity to a court appointed psychologist. Peaches, the number one mortuarial cosmetologist in the tri-county area, is declaring her long lost, long haul trucker husband dead, and Jimmie, the rough around the edges manager of Whatley’s Western Wear, is resorting to extreme measures for the affections of Sweetgum’s newest widower. Can things get any worse after a neighbor’s pet devours the food, a one-eyed suitor declares his love, and a high stakes wager is made on who bakes the best red velvet cake? Well, it is the hottest day of July and we are smack dab in the middle of the Texas tornado season. Grab your measuring cups. It is a bitter battle for the better batter! Who’s bringing the three-bean salad?

Not being affiliated with a major party can make it tough to get on the ballot in Maine, for any public office. The Maine Election Commission requires that a candidate collect 4,000 valid citizen signatures and 40,000 dollars in campaign contributions by the end of May in the election year. Those candidates that were successful began collecting these requirements last year, and are eligible to receive matching campaign funds, equal to the most spent by any candidate.

As I began in mid-March of this year, and was enrolled as a full time student at UMA, I soon realized that I could not do both. My professors at UMA agreed to grant me time to finish classes late. Even with a handful of volunteers, I was unsuccessful in meeting the required deadline. I was not organized enough in my efforts.

There are several reasons why I wanted to be Governor of Maine. Let me list the primary problems in historical order:

1.) Dams without fish ways

2.) The Maine Turnpike

3.) The Maine State Lottery

4.) Mismanagement of State funds

5.) Maine’s business policies and tax laws

1.) This problem is rectifiable witha bond issue using existing funds. From 2004 to 2009 Maine’s Inland Fisheries & Wildlife (IF&W) spent 16.3+ million dollars raising and trucking game fish (trout & salmon) to places they could not swim to themselves. I’m not against hydro-power, I’m all for it, but not at the expense of the food chain. Game fish are not the only fish affected by our lack of fish ways on existing dams. Sturgeon, shad, alewives and other ocean run fish numbers are affected as well. We have been poor stewards by not having fish ways installed already.

2.) Many voters remember voting for a bond issue to create the Maine Turnpike with the understanding that once it was paid for the tolls would be eliminated, as they were for the Memorial bridge in Augusta. This obviously did not happen. It should. Beyond maintenance and salaries, profits go to the general fund. Let the legislature find another source of income, like say income tax from jobs for Mainers, who are known nation-wide, as Workers.

3.) Maine voters again were sold a bill of goods. The profits from which were to go into the education fund. Not so, never happened. The profits from the Maine State Lottery also go to the general fund. The legislature opted to contract outside, instead of using Maine State employees and Maine owned equipment, and chose Scientific Games (SG)as the contractor. I met a woman in the mid-1980s who worked for SG. At the time, she was paid 80,000 dollars a year to drive to businesses and demonstrate the use of the machines. ( I can’t help but wonder what the upper management was making a year.)

4.) While the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) must use outside contractors (Doctors, OTs, PTs, Nurses, etc.), and legislators have voted them increased fee schedules, but not the funds to pay for the increases, services to Mainers suffer. Many of these contractors won’t do business with DHHS because of the disparity of payment. Insurance companies pay about 3 times more than DHHS pays. The DHHS budget is, therefore, consistently under-funded. All other department heads, meanwhile, are aware that if they don’t “spend down” their budgets before the end of the year, their next year’s budget will be cut by that amount. Would that be so bad? I mean for the tax payers of Maine.

5.) Legislature needs to take a serious look at the cost of doing business in Maine. Fees and taxes must be reduced to encourage existing businesses and start-ups to employ more Mainers, who want to work. Unemployment compensation doesn’t last forever, and many who are under employed wind up on DHHS rolls. Stop the madness. Maine has a vast wealth of natural resources and entrepreneurs. Let us produce goods and services, and get income and sales tax. It’s the old fashioned way. It worked before, and will work again.

Sincerely,

Daniel Roy Albert

Write in Candidate for Governor. Gardiner, Maine

The Friday before Memorial Day Weekend 2010, was a great evening to be in Gardiner. The 1st Annual Hogs, Pies and Fireworks went off without a hitch and the crowd was thoroughly impressed; not only by the fireworks display of Central Maine Pyrotechnics, but also by the delicious pizza that was served up by several downtown businesses.

“It was a great event for the City because it displayed how much people in this area want to come out and enjoy each other’s company,” stated Chris West, Executive Director of Gardiner Main Street. “It was a perfect way for everyone to celebrate the official beginning of summer.”

As promised, the winner of the pizza tasting contest’s “Peoples’ Choice Award” received a trophy celebrating their victory. “We are hoping to make this an annual event so the trophy can be passed around from year to year,” states West. “It will make for great competition between the area restaurants.” This year’s winner, Dennis’ Pizza, has the trophy proudly displayed at their Bridge Street location for all to see.

Central Maine Pyrotechnics was recognized with a certificate of appreciation for generously agreeing to do their training session at the waterfront. “Without Steve and the crew at Central Maine Pyrotechnics this event would not have happened. We are truly grateful to them for putting on such a wonderful show,” West said. “Again, this event showed just how much the residents and business owners care about the community they live in.”

July 8th at 5:30pm to 8:30pm

“When you spend time around Michael’s art, it changes,” says Monkitree owner Clare Marron. “The time of day, your mood, the lighting… I want everybody to have one more chance to see Michael’s amazing work before we prepare for the next exhibit.”

There will be wine, cheese, and beverages available, as well as guitar music by local singer-songwriter and instrumentalist Nicholas Tozier. The event will conclude Monkitree’s first exhibit.

“While there is a wide variety of my work in exhibition at the gallery,” says Michael, “Artistically, I always strive to adhere to a common characteristic in my work which is creating a visual narrative. I have always felt that the most memorable works of art throughout history are those that meet that goal. Even abstract and non-representational works may have this chracteristic. It’s basically a viewer looking at a work and feeling a connection to it – sensing a story. I feel that the works in this exhibit successfully allowed me to meet that goal.

“I also want to thank Clare and Peter for inviting me to be such a major part of their wonderful art gallery. They both share great vision not only for the future of the space, but for the exciting and emerging art community present within Gardiner. Discovering and exploring Gardiner was a true highlight of my trip and I look forward to returning at some point in the future.”
