1 swimmer found dead, 1 missing after jump off ‘Jaws’ bridge on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

Date:

One of the two missing swimmers who jumped off the “Jaws” bridge on Martha’s Vineyard late Sunday night was found dead. Another remains missing. Officials said four people jumped off the bridge in Edgartown at 11 p.m. Two were rescued, but two men were still missing. A search team found the body of one of the missing swimmers, a 26-year-old man. The search for the other man, a 21-year-old, was suspended Monday afternoon. The man who died and the man who is still missing are brothers, state police said. The men were seasonal workers at a restaurant on Martha’s Vineyard and rented a residence in Oak Bluffs, state police said. The two rescued people were taken to hospital for treatment. Local police and firefighters searched for the men until about 3:30 a.m. and the state police Marine Unit, state police divers and the Massachusetts state police air wing joined the resumed search Monday morning. Troopers will return Tuesday with environmental police officers to continue the search for the missing man using side-scan sonar, state police said. The bridge, officially called the American Legion Bridge, is a popular attraction for locals and tourists alike, even though there is a sign warning people not to jump or dive off the bridge. It connects Edgartown to Oak Bluffs and became famous after appearing in several scenes in “Jaws”.
