When taken en masse, the average Social Security retirement benefit for all retired workers was $1,657 as of January 2022, but the maximum possible benefit reached $4,194.

To determine which states received the most Social Security benefits, GOBankingRates accessed data from the Social Security Administration regarding total benefits paid by the state, along with the number of Social Security beneficiaries in each state. For this analysis, only old-age, surviving dependant’s and disability insurance, or OASDI, has been included. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) was not considered. States are ranked in reverse order, with the state that receives the most Social Security being number 1. Check out the 10 states that receive the most.
