MILLIONS of Californians are still waiting for their middle class tax refunds as the holiday season approaches.
The state paid more than 7 million of the 23 million residents eligible for the money.

Payments began to be phased out on Oct. 7 to residents who received the first or second round of the Golden State Stimulus direct deposit payments.
The rest of the direct deposits would take place from October 28 to November 14.
Those not set up for direct deposit started receiving debit cards in the mail on October 25 and will continue to do so until December 10.
Anyone who has received a Golden State Stimulus check in the mail in 2021 will receive their payment via debit card by January 14th.
So far, the state has paid more than 6 million people through direct deposit and 1.6 million through debit cards.
Qualifying for the discount
According to the state’s website, the following households are eligible for the discount.
Married/registered domestic partner filing jointly
- CA AGI: $150,000 or less – $1,050 with a dependent, $700 without a dependent
- CA AGI: $150,001 to $250,000 – $750 with a dependent, $500 without a dependent
- CA AGI: $250,001 to $500,000 – $600 with a dependent, $400 without a dependent
Head of household or eligible widower
- CA AGI: $150,000 or less – $700 with a dependent, $350 without a dependent
- CA AGI: $150,001 to $250,000 – $500 with a dependent, $250 without a dependent
- CA AGI: $250,001 to $500,000 – $400 with a dependent, $200 without a dependent
Single or married/registered domestic partner submit separately
- CA AGI: $75,000 or less – $700 with a dependent, $350 without a dependent
- CA AGI: $75,001 to $125,000 – $500 with a dependent, $250 without a dependent
- CA AGI: $125,001 to $250,000 – $400 with a dependent, $200 without a dependent
- CA AGI: $250,001 to $500,000 – $400 with a dependent, $200 without a dependent
The tax refund of the middle class
The middle-class tax refund will cost the state about $9.5 billion and is part of a larger $12 billion plan.
Payments are between $200 and $1,050 per qualifying household.
To be eligible, California residents must file their 2020 tax returns by October 15, 2021, have lived in California for at least six months in 2020, and are still living there.
Please note that those who are eligible to be claimed as dependents in 2020 will not receive a discount.
Payment amounts are based on California adjusted gross income (AGI) reported on your 2020 tax return.
At the federal level, there are only a few days left to claim the child discount.
