Ellen DeGeneres was photographed having lunch with her wife, Portia de Rossic, in Montecitio, California on August 24. The women were seen leaving the restaurant with Portia putting a protective arm around Ellen’s shoulder amid the flashing lights of the paparazzi. This was the first time Ellen was seen in public since her ex-girlfriend’s death, Anne Hecheon August 11.
Anne was involved in a fiery car accident when the vehicle she was driving crashed into a house on August 5. She was alert and spoke to paramedics after the crash, but eventually lost consciousness. A few days later, she was confirmed to be in a coma and “critical condition”. On August 11, Anne was pronounced brain dead, which is legally dead in California. However, she was kept alive through life support so that her organs could be donated. The recipients were found on August 14 and she was officially taken off the ventilator.
Officials revealed that Anne had drugs in her system at the time of the crash. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether the drugs were taken before the accident or given to Anne while she was in hospital. To obtain more information, a more conclusive drug test is performed. Once the test is complete, officials will be able to publicly confirm which substances were found in Anne’s system.
Anne and Ellen dated from 1997 to 2000. Although they were out of contact at the time of Anne’s death, Ellen said she was devastated for her ex’s loved ones at this difficult time. “This is a sad day,” she tweeted. “I send Anne’s children, family and friends all my love.” Before Anne succumbed to her injuries, Ellen also told photographers, “I don’t want anyone to get hurt.”
