2 released without charges after deadly Des Moines shooting

Des Moines police released the remaining two people detained Monday following a fatal shooting at a Des Moines outreach center. Police arrested 18-year-old Preston Walls of West Des Moines in connection with the shooting. Walls is charged with two counts of first degree murder, one count of attempted murder and one count of participation in criminal gangs. The other two people detained by police have been released without charge. The shooting was reported at about 12:53 a.m. to Starts Right Here, a nonprofit organization focused on helping at-risk youth. Starts Right Here was created by activist and rapper Will Keeps. The outreach center is located at 455 Southwest Fifth St. Starts Right Here has been a partner of Des Moines Public Schools since 2021. They serve between 40 and 50 DMPS students at a time. No DMPS employees were on scene at the time of the shooting. Police say three people were shot. Two male students were taken to hospital with critical injuries. They are now deceased. A third person, identified as Keeps, was taken to hospital in critical condition. Keeps underwent surgery on Monday afternoon. The students killed were an 18-year-old and a 16-year-old.
