Game day 3 choices
Ecuador 1, Senegal 1
Netherlands 3, Qatar 0

This one should be easy enough for the Dutch going on a mission under the scheming Louis van Gaal. Senegal looks good for second place ahead of Ecuador, but much will depend on when Sadio Mane is fit, given that he has already been ruled out of the Lions of Teranga’s opener with the Netherlands. Ultimately, Ecuador vs. the Senegalese on matchday 3 have to decide who joins the Orange in the knockout phase, with host country Qatar lucky to grab a point.

England should be able to secure first place here, leaving the USMNT and Wales to fight for second place against unpredictable outsiders Iran. Opening day should be tight as matchday 2 brings some key clashes that could decide who goes through given the Welsh and English meet in the final round. It feels like Gregg Berhalter’s men are just going to fall short Gareth Bales Wales, but much will depend on Team Melli, who have talent at a time of considerable political turmoil.

Saudi Arabia 0, Mexico 1

Argentina and the Netherlands seem to be the strongest bets to finish their group stage with three wins out of three. Lionel Messi’s Albiceleste should make light work of Saudi Arabia, Mexico and then Poland, while El Tri need to get off to a winning start if they want to beat the Whites and Reds into second place. Few give the Saudis a big chance, but Herve Renard is a proven international-level coach with underdog sides.

Tunisia 1, France 2

France are expected to top their group, but Denmark are tough opponents who can easily match them for first place. Expect both to get off to a winning start and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a low scoring encounter between the two in the second round of play. It could be that this is dictated by goal difference and that the last round of friends is ideal for the French and Danes to try and push up their goal tally.

Costa Rica 0, Germany 1

Germany and Spain could be two more teams that come out of their group undefeated. Expect both to win their opening game, while their matchday 2 meeting should be a draw. Japan is unlucky to be in such a tough group and while they should make life difficult for the Germans and Spaniards, it’s unlikely to be enough by the end.

Canada 1, Morocco 0

Of all the bigger European teams that could struggle this winter, I think Belgium will end up doing the worst and going out in the group stage. The golden generation of the Red Devils missed out on their chance for international glory and their Euro 2020 showing illustrated a further decline from a potential title win. Expect Canada to be tough opponents on their return to the World Cup podium and they could very well sneak through with Croatia, leaving Morocco with narrow results.

Cameroon 0, Brazil 3

Brazil are one of the strong favorites for the title and for good reason — their offense is sensational, and they have arguably one of the most balanced teams of all the contenders. Serbia and Switzerland both boast talented groups, but the Swiss have recently shown themselves to be an underrated force internationally, so should be good enough to finish second behind the Brazilians.

South Korea 1, Portugal 1

All signs point to Portugal having a really tough time this winter Cristiano Ronaldo continues to dominate football headlines for all the wrong reasons. Uruguay looks like a good bet to finish at the top of the pile, as the Portuguese sneak into an uninspired group just ahead of South Korea and Ghana. La Celeste should be gearing up for a chance at first place if they can win their opening game and avoid defeat to Fernando Santosdysfunctional side.

Round of 16 predictions

Netherlands 3, Wales 1
Argentina 2, Denmark 1 (after extra time)
England 2, Senegal 0
France 3, Mexico 1
Spain 2, Canada 1
Brazil 2, Portugal 0
Croatia 0, Germany 1 (after extra time)
Uruguay 1, Switzerland 2

Two of these tapes look ripe for extra time, with Messi doing just enough to steer Argentina past Denmark, while the Germans arrive too late to bludgeon Croatia. The Netherlands, England, France and Brazil should advance easily enough, while Spain and Switzerland should make theirs more difficult. Expect the Dutch, the French and the Brazilians to be very excited to enter the quarter-finals. Portugal finally separates from Santos after this latest disappointment that feels like an overdue change.

Quarterfinal predictions

Netherlands 2, Argentina 3 (after extra time)
Spain 1, Brazil 2
England 2, France 1 (after extra time)
Germany 2, Switzerland 0

Arguably one of the best matchups we’ll see in Qatar, expect at least two of these four to last longer than 90 minutes. Netherlands vs. Argentina has all it takes to become a true World Cup classic, with Van Gaal’s men all but ending Messi’s title dream, while Germany beat Switzerland in the easiest of four results. The Three Lions bypassing Les Bleus after extra time have a controversial French exit written all over them, which turns out to be Didier Deschamps’ last outing as boss with Zinedine Zidane appointed his successor in the aftermath of the defeat.

Semi-final predictions

Argentina 1, Brazil 1 (Argentina win on penalties)
England 1, Germany 2

Heartache for Neymar and Brazil who fall to Messi’s Argentina in Lusail on penalties. It will be very interesting to see how the two fare on their return to Paris Saint-Germain, but there will be no showdown between Neymar and Mbappe in the battle for third as England have made it to the other semi-final. Gareth Southgate’s men, spared the agony of a penalty defeat to the Germans, fall to a dead Jamal Musiala winner – possibly more painful given his England past.

Latest Prediction

Argentina 2, Germany 1

Messi and La Albiceleste do it and take revenge on the National Eleven for the pain of their 2014 World Cup loss in Brazil. The PSG man is on the scoresheet and, at the age of 35, nets Argentina’s second goal to claim the title he has craved all his career. Hansi Flick and his German team can look to the future with great optimism as few of his outfield players are over 30 years old.
