Amber Heard open letter condemns 'public shaming,' Johnny Depp verdict

Gloria Steinem, along with several experts on intimate partner violence, is “deeply concerned” about the verdict in the defamation lawsuit between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.

Steinem and organizations including the National Organization for Women, the National Women’s Law Center, Equality Now and the Women’s March Foundation went public with an open letter in support of Heard Wednesday.

“Ms. Heard’s defamation and continued online harassment against her and those who have expressed her support are unprecedented, both vitriol and extensive,” the open letter states. “Much of this harassment was fueled by disinformation, misogyny, biphobia and a monetized social media environment where a woman’s allegations of domestic violence and sexual assault were mocked for entertainment.”

The signatories added: “The same disinformation and accusatory tropes are now being used against others who have allegedly taken advantage.”

The experts called the verdict in Depp’s favor “a fundamental misunderstanding of intimate partner and sexual violence and how survivors respond to it. … We are deeply concerned about the increasing abuse of defamation lawsuits to threaten and silence survivors.” lay.”

“We condemn the public harassment of Amber Heard,” the open letter concludes.

The outpouring of support for Heard comes a week after Depp’s appearance on Rihanna’s “Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 4” show, which sparked controversy.

Earlier this year, Depp faced his ex-wife Amber Heard in court in a highly controversial trial in which he accused Heard of defaming him in December 2018. In June, a Virginia jury awarded him more than $10 million in punitive damages. Heard also partially won her countersuit, with the jury awarding her $2 million in punitive damages.

During the trial, Heard’s allegations of abuse by Depp resurfaced during intense testimony, which was broadcast live daily. Depp said he never abused Heard and claimed she abused him.

Heard said after the trial she was “heartbroken that the mountain of evidence was still not enough to confront my ex-husband’s disproportionate power, influence and sway.” She also expressed concern that it “turns back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke out and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated.”

“Even someone who is sure I deserve all this hate and vitriol, even if you think I’m lying, you still can’t look me in the eye and tell me you think there’s fair representation on social media,” said she later in a “Dateline” interview with Savannah Guthrie “You can’t tell me you think this has been fair.”
