Amy Robach, T.J. Holmes and the 'GMA' affair mess: Why we're hooked

Aside from the World Cup, there’s one event that plays on live TV that we’re addicted to: the “Good Morning America” drama.

It started when “GMA3” co-hosts Amy Robach and TJ Holmes, both married, were photographed holding hands. Yesterday, they were quickly sidelined – taken off the air because their rumors of a romance had “become an internal and an external distraction.”

Our cultural hunger for scandal is nothing new, but there is something about this particular situation that catches the eye. The unpredictability of the ‘GMA3’ affair makes it ‘good gossip’. It involves two apparently healthy public figures, a multitude of incriminating photos and victims, or in this case family members, affected by the rumored affair.

“We’re interested in relationships, but more importantly, we’re interested in relationship failure — especially when we watch it evolve and unfold right before our very eyes on television,” says Donna Rockwell, clinical psychologist and founder of Al Famous.

Since rumors started circulating last week, #gmaaffair has over 250,000 views on TikTok. Eagle-eyed onlookers have been combing through the couple’s old social media posts (before their accounts were deactivated), with many questioning the most intimate details of their reported fling and the status of their current marriage.

“We love train wrecks and car crashes. Gossip is one of humanity’s favorite times, and this one is a perfect invitation for it,” continues Rockwell. “And once the car crash has been televised, we become more invested.”

On camera, Robach and Holmes seemed to have a heartwarming but professionally platonic relationship. They’ve co-hosted the family-friendly program since 2020 and even train for a half marathon together.

“For the viewer who tunes in regularly, ‘GMA’ fulfills a social role that used to be fulfilled face-to-face, with the morning coffee hour with friends or the behind-the-scenes gossip session,” saysGayle Stever, professor of psychology at Empire State College/SUNY. “The informal format of this talk show encourages the illusion of intimacy, of us all sitting around the table chatting about the day’s events (with them).”

But even those who aren’t ardent fans of “Good Morning America” or its early afternoon rerun, “GMA3,” are become aware of it. A user tweeted“I don’t know who these people are, but this seems like a fun Christmas scandal.”

“never seen a minute of gma but very invested in this cheating scandal,” another user added.

Some people, Rockwell says, feel they have a right to know every detail about a public figure’s professional and personal life. Others indulge in celebrity gossip to feel better about their own lives.

In addition, unanswered questions can play a role in this public fascination. According to Stever, people wonder, “Are these people leaving ‘GMA?’ “Should they expect to leave GMA?” “Did they violate a morality clause in their contracts?”

She adds, “It’s all getting very murky.”

‘We don’t care about GMA, but we like junk’

On the surface, the “GMA” drama on social media is considered comedic fodder for millions of people. Numerous jokes and memes have poked fun at the disgraced couple, with one user tweeting: “We don’t care about #GMA, but we love MESS!”

However, our obsession with scandal, our entertainment derived from gossip, reveals more about us than Robach and Holmes, experts say.

“It’s sad,” says Rockwell. “We live in an age of social media where all the details are coming out, more and more layers are being added to the story…attracting people with little regard for the families and children involved in real life.”

Even when it comes to celebrities or TV personalities, our attitude towards gossip needs to change. Otherwise, we’re normalizing a culture of judgment instead of “compassion, empathy, and respect for one’s privacy,” says Rockwell.
