Ashton Kutcher's twin Michael confesses 'jealousy' drove them apart

Ashton Kutcher and his twin brother Michael talk about the “jealousy” that caused a rift in their relationship.

Kutcher, who rose to fame in his 20s on the sitcom “That ’70s Show,” got candid with his brother during their appearance on the upcoming Paramount+ show “The Checkup With Dr. David Agus,” revealing that his brother made him wonder, “How can I be so lucky?”

“That my brother is born with cerebral palsy, then has a heart transplant, then has a random blood clot, these things where you think, ‘Who needs to go through that?’ Kutcher, 44, said in an excerpt from the interview published Monday by Entertainment Tonight.

Kutcher also revealed what helped him and his brother mend their strained relationship.

The actor hit back at an exchange that happened when his brother visited him in New York as he “started to gain some traction” in his entertainment career.

“He looked at me and he said, ‘Every time you feel sorry for me, you make me less,'” Kutcher said. “He said, ‘This is the only life I’ve ever known, so stop feeling sorry for the only thing I’ve got.’ And that then caused a whole shift back to where I think we are now, which is equal to each other again. That’s all.”

When asked why they drifted apart, Michael replied, “Jealousy, at least on my part.”

Last year, Michael spoke of the anger he felt when his actor brother revealed to the world his diagnosis of cerebral palsy in a 2003 interview.

According to Mayo Clinic, cerebral palsy is a condition that affects “motion and muscle tone or posture.” Michael was diagnosed at age 3 and told Today in May 2021 that he spent most of his life trying to hide it.

“I was very angry. Very angry. I remember talking to him about it,” Michael said. “I didn’t want to be the face of CP. I never talked about it.”

Michael added that he is no longer mad at his brother, who he refers to by his real name Chris, and is actually thankful for that interview 18 years ago.

“Chris has done me the biggest favor he’s ever done, because he allowed me to be myself,” said Michael.

He also reflected on how Kutcher always defended him against bullies after being called “every name in the book on the playground.”

“My brother picked a fight with them. He stood up for me. He wanted them to treat me with respect,” Michael said. “And that meant a lot.”

The creator of “Punk’d” would also make sure that his brother would be invited to every sleepover he went to.

“Most of the time they said yes, but sometimes they would say no and Chris would say, ‘Well then I’m not coming,'” Michael said. “Chris would tell me, ‘I wish I could take all this from you – and do it myself.’ “
