Battlefield 2042 Bringing Classes Back To The Game In Update

In case you didn’t already know, Battlefield 2042 is a game that was released in the middle of a pandemic without anywhere else near enough design work or testing is done for such a flagship release. Our last reminder of this comes in the form of an update which one will quite undoing one of the main selling points at launch.

2042 made a huge deal of pre-release about its new “Specialists”, hero-type characters with flexible gear that would replace the series’ proven “Class” system (multiplayer FPS archetypes like “Recon” and “Assault”). Those specialists were wildly unpopular with longtime fans, both for their gameplay implications and their design, and while the latter is already on the agenda it seems developers are convinced DICE to rework the first one as well.

Posted in a major update by the development teamhas been revealed that they “started a massive overhaul of the way you go to play with specialists”, which is essentially the difference between the traditional system and 2042’s use of specialists. The hero characters will continue to exist, but they will be categorized into class levels (see above), restricting the use of some gadgets between classes to “make sure the class identity is more pronounced”. So, for example, only scout players can use a SOFLAM, while medical crates are only available to support players. As someone who uses Mackay (in the ‘Assault’ class) but uses the SOFLAM a lot, that sucks, but I guess we’ll see how it all plays out once the changes go live (which won’t be for a while, since DICE says it won’t be until season 3).

Other changes coming in and around Season 2 include three new weapons (two mains power and a side arm), as well as updates to two of the game’s launch maps, Renewal and Orbital, which come alongside another brand new map. DICE will also start adding some “vault” weapons to the main game, which are time travel weapons Portal game mode, as well as continuing the visual refresh of all specialists, especially “changes in voice, posture and facial expression.”
