Britney Spears seemingly hits out at pal Selena Gomez over a 2016 speech

Date:

Britney Spears apparently slammed her pal Selena Gomez in a bizarre post shared on Instagram on Tuesday.

The 40-year-old pop star appeared to be referencing an acceptance speech that Gomez (30) gave at the 2016 American Music Awards after taking home the Favorite Female Pop/Rock Artist gong.

“I don’t want to see your bodies on Instagram. I want to see what’s in here,” Gomez says, gesturing to her heart. “I’m not trying to get confirmation and I don’t need it anymore.”

Spears quotes almost verbatim the first line in Tuesday’s post before expressing her disdain for “just speeches” and women who “shame” other women.

‘Don’t you just love the guts of women who are determined to win awards and speak out about their beliefs about not showing their bodies on Instagram???!!!!!’ Spear started.

“They say ‘This is NOT something I would do’, but it is the women who make $4 million videos about sucking and licking homemade ice cream!!!!”

The music video “homemade ice cream” may be a reference to Gomez’s 2020 collaboration with South Korean girl group BLACKPINK, titled Ice Cream.

The music video was released in August 2020 and featured footage of Gomez, as well as BLACKPINK members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa, manning an ice cream truck and eating ice cream cones.

“I don’t want to see your bodies on Instagram. I want to see what’s in here,” Gomez says, gesturing to her heart. ‘I’m not trying to get validation and I don’t need it anymore’

Information about the music video’s budget has not been shared publicly.

Spears continued: ‘These other girls have nothing but beautiful bodies!!!! Who cares if they show it off??? THEY SHOULD !!!’

“So the next time I see someone with a big budget video that sucks on lollipops and still gives righteous speeches that shame other women for exposing their bodies, I’d like to tell those people not to be hypocritical if you’re sucks on your lollipop with a HUGE budget dreams…

‘why would you be adamant against girls who get attention JUST LIKE YOU and they have nothing at all????’ Spears concluded. The Toxic hitmaker added an image of herself donning a red bikini top at her Thousand Oaks home.

After publishing the cryptic post on Instagram, Spears fans began to speculate that Gomez could be the subject.

Any argument between the two singers would come as a shock, as Gomez was among those invited to attend Spears’ wedding to actor Sam Asghari, 28, last June.

The ceremony took place on the estate of Spears’ Thousand Oaks and featured a slew of celebrity guests, including Madonna, Drew Barrymore and Paris Hilton.

When asked about her presence, Gomez told ET that she thinks Spears was surrounded by “a lot of people who love her that day.”

Two months after they tied the knot, Spears honored the date by sharing a post on Instagram thanking the Disney Channel alum for wishing her luck.

“Thanks to Selena for telling me all she wants is for me to be 3 times happy!!! It was a very, very, very special wedding!!!’ she wrote.

The mother of two also had a photo of Gomez in the post.

Although the pair does not appear to have worked together in the past, Gomez previously recorded a song Britney wrote called Whiplash.

The tune was supposed to be on Spears’ 2008 album Circus, but it didn’t make it, so Selena was able to record it when she performed with Selena Gomez and The Scene.

“It was an honor,” she told MTV News. ‘I just heard the song; I fell in love with it. They gave it to me, the producers who were working on it, and I came and sang and saw that she had co-wrote it, so I was really excited.’
