Christina Bobb and Evan Corcoran: Trump’s attorneys face scrutiny over level of cooperation with Justice Department on classified docs

The FBI’s Aug. 8 search, which uncovered dozens of classified material, cast “serious doubts” on the affidavit issued by one of Trump’s attorneys in June stating that all classified material had been returned and that a ” diligent investigation” had been conducted, the Justice Department wrote.

Trump’s attorney, Christina Bobb, was the person who signed the June 3 letter confirming that all materials requested in Trump’s subpoena had been turned over to the Justice Department, two sources familiar with the case tell. cnn.

After receiving the subpoena, Trump’s team said it had conducted a “diligent search” for boxes that had been moved from the White House to Florida after Trump left office, according to the letter filed with a DOJ late Tuesday. court. Specifically, the letter Bobb signed states that she swears or affirms that “the above statements are true and correct to the best of my knowledge.”

Though her name was redacted Tuesday night, sources tell CNN that it was Bobb who signed the letter and was designated as the custodian of the data. Bobb and Trump attorney Evan Corcoran attended the June meeting with federal investigators in Mar-a-Lago, when officers were shown a storage room where materials were kept.

The New York Times, which first reported that Bobb had signed the document, reported that Corcoran prepared the June statement that Bobb had signed.

Bobb and Corcoran did not respond to CNN’s requests for comment. They have not been charged with crimes.

In court filed Tuesday, the Justice Department said the FBI has “uncovered multiple sources of evidence indicating that the response to the May 11 grand jury subpoena was incomplete and that classified documents remained at the property, despite the affidavit to the government on June 3.”

That the FBI has recovered twice as many documents with classification markings in hours as the ‘diligent search’ that counsel for the former president and other representatives had for weeks to seriously question the statements in the June 3 certification and raises doubts raise the level of cooperation in this matter,” DOJ wrote.

CNN legal analyst Elie Honig said the statements in the June certification are demonstrably false, and it is questionable whether prosecutors can determine that Trump’s attorney “made that statement knowing it was false.”

“If so — and that’s a big if — then we could see false statements and obstruction charges in play,” Honig said.

The new investigation into the affidavit Bobb signed is just the latest case in which questions have been raised about the conduct of Trump’s legal team since the FBI searched his Florida home and resort.

Sources close to Trump have questioned the role of Bobb, a former One America News Network TV host who previously assisted Rudy Giuliani in his behind-the-scenes efforts to undo the 2020 election results, CNN reports.

Bobb has been on television defending Trump, although she is not included in the legal files Trump has filed in Florida to appoint a special master to review the material taken from the FBI’s search for Mar- a-Lago.

Corcoran is a former assistant US attorney based in Baltimore who has also represented Trump associate Steve Bannon.

On Monday, Trump added former Florida Attorney General Chris Kise to his legal team to represent him in the Mar-a-Lago search case. Kise will appear in court in Florida on Thursday with the rest of Trump’s legal team in the former president’s bid to be assigned a special master to review Mar-a-Lago’s material.

Access to storage room

Tuesday’s DOJ filing contained a story of the administration’s attempts to retrieve classified material from Mar-a-Lago ahead of the August search — including several examples where members of Trump’s team are allegedly part of of an attempt to hinder the government’s efforts.

In addition to the DOJ showing that Trump’s team failed to comply with the subpoena to return all classified documents, the administration’s filing focuses on the June 3 meeting between Trump’s legal team and federal investigators.

In its report, the Justice Department describes the conduct of a Trump attorney, who is not named in the letter, but according to a letter attached to the filings, was Corcoran, who “stated that all documents belonging to the White House According to the file, Mar-a-Lago were kept in the storage room of the resort.

“The counsel further stated that no other records were stored in a private office space or other location in the property and that all available boxes were searched,” the DOJ said.

The DOJ and FBI officials who were visiting that day allowed them to enter the storage area,” counsel for the former president expressly prohibits government officials from opening or looking inside the boxes that were in the storage room, leaving the government no chance. was given to confirm that no documents with classification marks remained.”

With its further investigation, the “government developed evidence that a search limited to the storage area would not have found all the classified documents on the property.”

“The government has also developed evidence that government documents were likely hidden and removed from the storage area and that attempts were likely made to obstruct the government’s investigation,” the DOJ wrote.
