Dr. Anthony Fauci to leave federal government in December after decades as nation’s top infectious disease expert

Date:

“I announce today that I will be stepping down from the positions of Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and Chief of the NIAID Laboratory of Immunoregulation, as well as the position of Chief Medical Advisor to President Joe Biden. left in December this year to continue the next chapter of my career,” Fauci said.

Fauci, 81, served with the NIAID for 38 years, beginning in the administration of former President Ronald Reagan, a role in which he helped lead the US response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, as well as the West Nile virus, the anthrax attacks, pandemic flu , various threats for bird flu, Ebola and Zika. He became one of the most public faces of the federal response to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

Biden praised Fauci’s work in a statement, noting his “unwavering” dedication to the work, as well as his “unmatched spirit, energy and scientific integrity.”

“Due to Dr. Fauci’s many contributions to public health, lives have been saved here in the United States and around the world. As he leaves his position in the US government, I know that the American people and the entire world will continue to benefit from Dr. Fauci. Fauci’s expertise in what he does next,” Biden said.

Biden added: “Whether you have met him in person or not, he has touched the lives of all Americans with his work. I express my deepest gratitude for his public service. The United States of America is stronger, more resilient and healthier to him. “

Fauci said in his statement that he is “not retiring” and “will continue to advance science and public health and inspire and guide the next generation of scientific leaders as they help the world prepare for future infectious disease threats.”

Fauci and then-President Donald Trump publicly disagreed on how to handle the pandemic, what the right message was for the American people, and how to balance reopening with preventing further contagion. Despite everything, Trump insisted that he respected Fauci but disagreed with his approach.

But at the bottom of their relationship, Trump suggested he consider firing the doctor. Attacks from Trump’s allies have increased Fauci’s security.

In 2020, Fauci told Dr. CNN’s Sanjay Gupta that he should be given security protection after his family received death threats and harassment.

Fauci told CNN last month that political pressure was not a factor in his decision to eventually leave his role.

“It has nothing to do with pressure, nothing to do with all the other bullshit you hear about, all the barbs, the nooses and the arrows. That doesn’t affect me,” he said.
