Duchess Meghan faced 'disgusting, very real' online threats in UK

Prince Harry and his wife, Duchess Meghan of Sussex, fell victim to a deluge of online threats while living in the UK, according to a senior police official who described the abuse as “disgusting and very real”.

Neil Basu, the outgoing Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, told Channel 4 News in an interview posted on Twitter on Tuesday that the threats were credible and that the amount and scope of the content would have left the former Meghan Markle feeling “always under threat”.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who left the UK and partially moved to California in 2020, they said, for security reasons, have decried racist and violent threats since at least 2016, even though their legion of critics have accused them of exaggerating their threat sensitivity.

Now Basu, former counter-terrorism chief and responsible for royal protection in the years before the Sussexes left, supports what they have said.

His comments provide new context for Harry’s legal attempts to get police protection for his family when they are in the UK, over which he is suing the UK government.

In conversation with Channel 4’s Cathy NewmanBasu, who is biracial, was asked to characterize the threats the Sussexes received. “Disgusting and very real,” he replied.

They were many and mainly from the extreme right, he confirmed.

“Absolutely, and if you had seen the things that were written and you received it… the kind of rhetoric that is online, if you don’t know what I know, you would feel threatened all the time,” he said. .

He was convinced that the danger to Meghan’s life was real, he said. “We had teams investigating it. People have been prosecuted for those threats.”

Harry’s legal action against the Home Office over his security arrangements during his visit to the UK is pending. In July, a Supreme Court judge said part of his case could be reviewed.

Harry, 38, is contesting the February 2020 decision by the Home Office’s royal patronage committee that he and his family would no longer receive the same level of personal protection during a visit, even though he offered to arrange it himself to pay.

A spokesman for the Sussexes in California declined to comment to USA TODAY.
