World Cup: American goalkeeper Matt Turner calls England ‘tournament favourites’

England will take on the US in Group B of the World Cup in Qatar on Friday. The Three Lions won their opening game in style against Iran to secure a 6-2 win as Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish were all on the scoresheet for Gareth Southgate’s side.

Harry Kane has shrugged off an injury and is fit to play after undergoing an ankle scan this week, while Harry Maguire has also stated he is ready to start after an illness. Southgate has therefore designated an unchanged team.

England will look to end an unwanted record and claim their first victory over the USA at a World Cup. The United States famously beat England at the 1950 World Cup, before Rob Green’s mistake resulted in a 1-1 draw in South Africa in 2010.

The match kicks off at 10pm local time (7pm GMT) and can be followed live on ITV. For those in the US, it’s 2pm ET/11pm PT and airs on Fox and Telemundo.

2022 World Cup: England vs USA

Jordan Pickford hopes England will receive fair treatment from officials after boss Gareth Southgate said he was “concerned” his side had been used as an example at pre-World Cup referees’ meetings.

England were denied what appeared to be an obvious penalty when Harry Maguire was grabbed by Rouzbeh Cheshmi early on Monday in their 6-2 win over Iran.

The VAR decided not to intervene, but later warned the referee for a shirt tug in the England penalty area, which led to Mehdi Taremi scoring a last gasp penalty, while a similar offense resulted in a penalty kick in the shock defeat of Argentina vs Saudi Arabia. on Tuesday.

2022 World Cup: England captain fit to play against US after scan all clear

Kane suffered a blow to his right ankle after a fumble challenge by Morteza Pouraliganji in England’s 6-2 win against Iran on Monday – the national team’s biggest ever win at the start of a major tournament.

The Spurs striker, who has a history of ankle problems, played on for a good 25 minutes but was seen limping after the match and went for a scan as a precaution.

But the 29-year-old was given the green light to train on Wednesday, with the official England Twitter account sharing a photo of him in training accompanied by the caption “skipper” and a fist emoji.

World Cup 2022: England vs USA – PREVIEW

Preview of lead football writer Miguel Delaney’s big game from Doha

When England started playing the ball against Iran, they felt something different.

“Definitely a click,” said John Stones of the 6-2 win. “Or a desire to make things right. We had come out of a bad period.”

They can now see through to the other side. England scored more goals against Iran than in the entire Nations League campaign. However, the reality was that it was a step up from Gareth Southgate’s general style rather than just the past eight months.

“I think people wouldn’t expect us to be like this after watching us for a few years and the way we play football,” the manager acknowledged. “Maybe we’ve fallen back to normal.”

The challenge now is to make it the norm and illustrate that it was not partly a product of Iran’s disorder; that England has made known their credentials.

World Cup 2022: Who is the official Jesus Valenzuela between England and the USA?

Jesus Valenzuela will referee England’s match against the US at the World Cup tonight.

The Venezuelan will take charge of his first match at the World Cup after being selected as one of 36 referees at the Qatar tournament.

The 39-year-old is regarded as one of the best referees in South America – he has taken charge of matches in the Copa America, Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana and South American World Cup qualifiers.

He is a professional referee in Venezuela’s top flight, where he was in charge of nine games before the competition ended for the World Cup.

However, in those games, Valenzuela showed red cards in seven of them, as well as a series of yellow cards.

England fans are banned from wearing replica Crusader costumes during the World Cup in Qatar

England fans will be banned from Friday’s game in Qatar against the United States and future World Cup matches if they wear replica crusader costumes considered culturally insensitive in a Muslim country, FIFA said.

England supporters have been using imitation chain mail, plastic helmets and toy guns as game dress-up for years.

But footage of some fans dressed as crusaders at Monday’s 6-2 victory over Iran in the Qatari capital Doha was criticized online, prompting the sport’s international governing body to crack down on the costumes.

“These costumes in an Arab or Middle Eastern context can be perceived as offensive, so that is why they are not allowed in stadiums,” said a FIFA spokesperson.

For many Arabs, the word crusade evokes a painful history of violent invasions by Christians who sought to conquer Jerusalem and nearby areas under Islamic rule in the 11th to 13th centuries.

Issues of culture and rights have received almost as much attention as football at the World Cup in Qatar.

Earlier this week, some Wales fans were instructed to don hats emblazoned with the rainbow colors of the LGBT community during their team’s first game of the tournament against the United States.

Same-sex relationships are illegal in Qatar.

Wales’ football authorities said on Thursday FIFA had confirmed that supporters wearing rainbow hats and flags would be allowed access to the stadium for Wales’ match against Iran on Friday, which Wales lost 2-0.

Under pressure from FIFA, the captains of England, Wales, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany and Denmark this week abandoned their plans to wear armbands to support gay rights.

England play Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy in Naples

England’s opening Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy will take place in Naples.

The Italian Football Federation has confirmed that the Group C campaign will begin on March 23 at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium.

The Azzurri, who beat England at Wembley on penalties to win Euro 2020, will return to Naples nearly 10 years after the 2014 World Cup qualifier against Armenia.

The match against England was expected to take place in Bari, but renovation work at the Stadio San Nicola required a different venue.

However, the choice of venue will raise concerns for the safety of traveling England fans after problems encountered in European clubs’ matches against Napoli.

Roberto Mancini’s side failed to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar, after being knocked out of the play-offs by North Macedonia, but impressed in the Nations League campaign, finishing top of Group A3 as England suffered relegation.

In September, Italy defeated England 1–0 in their Nations League match at San Siro.

Ukraine, North Macedonia and Malta make up the rest of the Euro 2024 qualifying group, with the top two teams reaching the final in Germany.

Gareth Southgate: England players put country on the map during World Cup

Gareth Southgate believes England players are “putting the country on the map”.

After many disappointing results at tournaments, Southgate believes the Three Lions are capable of a “sustained challenge”.

“We feel we can be competitive for the next few years and that really has to be the goal, to have a continued challenge in the final stages of the big leagues, we haven’t done that for years and years,” Southgate said.

“These players really put our country on the map. They are regaining our respectability on the global stage and we must continue to do so.”
