The Finnish prime minister said on Friday that she has undergone a drug test following public reactions to videos that surfaced this week of her dancing and singing with her friends.

“I consider these allegations very serious, and while I find the demand for a drug test unjust, for my own legal protection and to clear up any doubts, I took a drug test today, the results of which will come in about a week.” Sanna Marin told reporters on Friday.

Objections to her parties and behavior came after two private videos were leaked. In it, Marin can be seen dancing and singing with her friends, including Finnish celebrities and Finnish pop star Olavi Uusivirta, the BBC reported.

Marin said she knew she was being filmed, Finnish outlet Yle reported, but added that the videos should remain private.

“I’m upset that these videos have gone public,” Marin said. “It was about me having a night out with friends. Partying – even in a rambunctious way – dancing and singing.”

The prime minister previously said she was not taking any drugs and had only drunk some alcoholic beverages.

Reactions are mixed

Calls for a drug test came from members of opposition parties. And while some have criticized the Prime Minister for the behavior on social media, others have it celebrated. And it’s not the first time Marin’s behavior has been commented on after work.

The 36-year-old has been photographed at music festivals in the past wearing cropped jeans and a leather jacket. While some have questioned her professionalism, others have praised her relativity and her ability to maintain a work-life balance.

Her time in the office wasn’t just full of partying. Marin was elected Prime Minister in 2019, becoming Finland’s youngest ever Prime Minister. She represents the Social Democratic Party and in her tenure, the country has lived through the global pandemic, dealt with its neighbour, Russia launched a war in Ukraine, and recently Finland got ready to join NATO along with Sweden.

Many have asked how gender plays a role in control

The investigation Marin has undergone this week has led many to question whether this behavior and subsequent reactions would be the same if a man were in the position of prime minister and filmed the same activities.

“There is a tendency to focus on women’s personal lives, their appearance, and in general I would say that compared to men, women are more likely to really prove their credentials if they are capable politicians,” he said. Farida Jalalzai, associate dean of global initiatives and engagement at Virginia Tech.

Women are often tricked into going above and beyond what is expected of other people to prove they are professional, Jalalzai said, adding that Marin’s gender and age likely play a role in the coverage of these videos.

On the other hand, men in positions of power are not as often discussed in such personal ways, Jalalzai said, forcing women to pay the higher price in terms of the language used to describe them.

“Women have to do their best to do even more than a male politician to stay out of that kind of situation. [Marin] really doing something wrong if we’re just talking about dancing?” said Jalalzai.

“It just listens back [to] this time, women’s behavior had a lot to do with the respect they were given or their families in society — and it just seems a bit archaic,” Jalalzai added.
